# 2026 Resume Format: What to Keep, What to Kill in 2026

Build a 2026 resume format that parses cleanly. Compare layouts, place dates in MM/YYYY, set Word tabs, choose headings, and pass a text test.

> Use a chronological or combination 2026 resume format with standard headings, MM/YYYY dates, plain text structure, targeted skills, and no tables, columns, graphics, or functional hiding of dates.

The best 2026 resume format is chronological or combination. Put your recent work first, use standard section names, write dates as MM/YYYY, and keep the file easy to read as plain text. Avoid functional layouts, tables, text boxes, columns, graphics, and decorative headings.

If an employer site or LinkedIn Easy Apply parses your file first, visual polish cannot repair missing or scrambled content. Build the resume for two readers: the parsing software and the hiring manager who reviews the result.

## Choose the right resume structure

### Chronological resume

A chronological resume lists your jobs in reverse order, with your current or most recent role first. Each entry includes the employer, job title, location, dates, and achievement bullets.

Use it when your work history supports the target role. It gives the clearest answer to three questions: what did you do, where did you do it, and when did you do it?

This is the default choice for most applicants. It also makes promotions, increasing responsibility, and relevant industry experience easy to see.

### Combination resume

A combination resume starts with a short summary and a targeted skills section, then moves into a complete chronological work history. It is useful when your transferable skills matter, or when a career change requires context before the reader reaches your jobs.

Keep the skills section connected to evidence in your work history. Do not list tools or abilities without showing where you used them. A combination format should add context, not hide employment dates.

### Functional resume

A functional resume groups experience by skill area and gives less attention to employers and dates. It can seem useful when you have career gaps, several short jobs, or a career change. In practice, it often creates problems.

The parser may struggle to connect accomplishments with the correct employer and period. A hiring manager may also wonder what you did recently. If you need to explain a gap, use a chronological structure and add a brief, factual note. Do not make the reader reconstruct your history.

| Format | ATS handling | Best use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chronological | Usually the clearest structure to parse | A steady or relevant work history | Skills may appear lower on the page |
| Combination | Works when skills and dates are both clearly labeled | Career changes or roles requiring a focused skill set | A long skills block can repeat the work history |
| Functional | Can separate skills from employers and dates | Rare cases where a nontraditional history needs explanation | Dates, ownership, and context can become unclear |

For more layout rules, read [ATS Format: What to Keep, What to Kill in 2026](https://yourunique.cv/articles/ats-format). The format decision is only one part of the file. Your headings, dates, bullets, and text order also matter.

## Use a parser-friendly section order

Use this order unless your experience requires a small adjustment:

1. Name and contact details
2. Resume title or professional summary
3. Skills
4. Work Experience
5. Education
6. Certifications, projects, publications, or additional sections when relevant

Use headings a parser and a person will recognize immediately:

- Summary
- Skills
- Work Experience
- Education
- Certifications
- Projects

Do not rename “Work Experience” to “Where I’ve Been.” Do not call skills “My Superpowers.” Creative labels may look harmless, but they make the section purpose less obvious.

Place your name, phone, email, city and state, and a professional LinkedIn URL in the header. Keep the contact block as text. Do not put essential contact details inside a header or footer that may be skipped during extraction.

A title below your name can identify your target role, such as “Financial Analyst” or “Customer Success Manager.” Match it to the job when the title is accurate. For more examples, see [Resume Title: What to Put Under Your Name in 2026](https://yourunique.cv/articles/resume-title).

## Write dates as MM/YYYY

Use one date style throughout the file. The clearest option is:

- 03/2023 to Present
- 06/2021 to 02/2023
- 08/2018 to 05/2021

Avoid mixing “March 2023,” “03-23,” and “2023.” Avoid vague entries such as “Current” without a start date. For education, use a graduation date or “Expected 05/2026” if you have not finished the program.

Put dates on the same line as the employer or job title. This gives the parser a strong connection between the date and the position. Keep the newest role first. Use the same order for every job entry.

## Right-align dates in Word without a table

Do not use a row of spaces to push dates to the right. The alignment will change when the font, margin, or PDF conversion changes. Do not use a table only to create two columns either.

Use a right tab stop:

1. Select the paragraphs that contain employer names and dates.
2. Open the Paragraph dialog in Word.
3. Select Tabs.
4. Enter a tab stop at the right margin, such as 6.5 inches on a standard one-inch-margin page.
5. Choose Right alignment, then select Set and OK.
6. Type the employer or role, press Tab once, and type the date.

Example:

```text
Acme Corporation, Chicago, IL                                      03/2023 to Present
Senior Financial Analyst                                           06/2021 to 02/2023
```

The large gap in this example represents one right tab, not repeated spaces. Set the tab stop for the document width you use. Check the exported PDF, then copy its text into a plain-text editor. The employer, title, and dates should appear in a sensible reading order.

## Keep page length proportional to experience

Do not force every resume onto one page. Use one page when you are early in your career and can present the relevant facts without shrinking the type or removing useful evidence. Use two pages when your experience, projects, certifications, or leadership results justify the space.

Do not add a second page for a single orphaned line. Tighten repeated bullets, remove old details, and reduce empty space first. Do not solve length by using tiny type, narrow margins, or dense paragraphs. A readable PDF is easier for both the parser and the person reviewing it.

For most applications, keep the file focused on the target role. Older positions can use fewer bullets. Highly relevant recent positions deserve more detail.

## Do this, not this: layout gallery

### Do this: one readable column

Use a single vertical reading path. Put your name at the top. Follow it with summary, skills, work experience, and education. Use consistent spacing between sections. Keep job titles, employers, and dates visually distinct through type size or spacing, not boxes and decorative shapes.

### Not this: two visual columns

Do not put skills in a left column and work history in a right column if the reading order is unclear. A parser may read the entire left column before the right column, mixing skills with dates or bullets. A hiring manager may see a polished design while the extracted text is disordered.

### Do this: simple bullets with results

Start each bullet with a clear action. Name the work, tool, scope, or result when it is relevant. For example:

“Reduced monthly reporting time by 30% by automating Excel and Power Query workflows for a 12-person finance team.”

### Not this: vague duty lists

Avoid bullets such as “Responsible for reports and team support.” They give little evidence and may miss the job description's important terms. Do not copy a keyword into a bullet unless the work is true and you can support it.

### Do this: restrained formatting

Use common fonts, normal text characters, clear margins, and familiar file types. Use bold for job titles or headings if the PDF still extracts correctly. Keep the design secondary to the content.

### Not this: visual decoration as content

Do not use skill bars, star ratings, logos, headshots, charts, icons instead of words, or text embedded in images. Do not put important skills in a graphic. The parser needs selectable text.

## Match the format to the job description

First, identify the job's required skills, tools, certifications, and responsibilities. Then place the accurate matches in your summary, skills section, and experience bullets. Use the employer's wording when it describes work you have actually done.

Do not add skills you do not have. Do not claim missing experience to improve a match. A keyword belongs on the resume only when your background supports it.

Run the finished PDF through the [job description keyword extractor](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/job-description-keyword-extractor). Paste the job description and optionally upload your resume. The Free Tool lists must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves, and can mark which keywords already appear in your file. It does not rewrite your resume, and its output is not an employer's ATS result.

After that check, you can paste the same job into [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) if you want a draft based on your real profile facts. It can keep your existing layout or use a built-in template. Review every generated line before exporting.

## Check the PDF, not just the Word file

Export the final version as a PDF only when the application instructions allow it. Open the PDF and test three things:

- Text can be selected and copied.
- Dates stay beside the correct job entries.
- Bullets, headings, and contact details appear in a logical order when pasted into plain text.

The plain-text paste test catches problems that a visual review misses. Paste the PDF into Notepad, TextEdit in plain-text mode, or another simple editor. Look for missing symbols, reversed columns, dates separated from jobs, and headings buried in the wrong section.

A checker can help find likely gaps, but it cannot prove how a particular employer's system will process your file. Treat the result as a diagnostic. Edit the resume yourself.

You can also use [YourUnique.cv's templates](https://yourunique.cv/templates) for a starting layout, then apply the same PDF and plain-text checks. The template does not replace tailoring. Your evidence and accurate job match still do the work.

## Questions

### What is the best 2026 resume format for an ATS?

A chronological resume is the safest choice for most applicants. A combination resume also works when you need to place relevant skills near the top while keeping a clear work history. A functional format often creates confusion because it hides dates and employers.

### Should resume dates use MM/YYYY?

Yes. Use a consistent format such as 03/2022 to 08/2024 or 03/2022 to Present. MM/YYYY gives the reader and parser a clear start and end point without adding unnecessary detail.

### Can I use tables to align resume dates in Word?

Avoid tables for the main resume layout. Use a right-aligned tab stop in Word instead. This keeps dates visually aligned while preserving a simpler text structure for parsing.

### How can I check whether my resume matches a job description?

Run your PDF and the job description through the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). It reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The result is a file scan, not the number produced by an employer's Workday or Greenhouse setup.

### Can [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) help create a targeted resume?

Yes. You can upload a resume, optionally add a LinkedIn URL, paste a job description or job link, and get a draft based on your profile facts. You can keep your layout or select a built-in template, then review the ATS read and export a PDF.
