# ATS CV Check: Free Scan Workflow Before You Hit Apply

Run an ats cv check before applying. Learn how to read scores, repair keywords, fix file issues, and pass a plain-text paste test for each job.

> An ats cv check is useful when you compare your CV with one job description, repair missing context and formatting, then re-scan until the must-have skills appear clearly and the text pastes back cleanly.

An ats cv check gives you a fast pre-application inspection. Use it to find missing job language, weak section labels, unclear dates, contact-field problems, and file issues. Then fix one item at a time and scan again.

Do not treat the score as a hiring-system prediction. No public checker is the same system an employer runs. The useful result is a cleaner, more relevant CV that pastes as readable text and puts your real qualifications in context.

## What an ATS CV check can tell you

Most checkers inspect a few practical areas:

| Area | What the checker may inspect | What you should verify yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Terms shared with the job description, such as tools, methods, certifications, and role names | Whether each term appears truthfully and in a useful sentence |
| Sections | Headings such as Experience, Education, Skills, and Certifications | Whether your sections are easy to identify and in a sensible order |
| Dates | Month and year patterns, date consistency, and possible gaps | Whether every role has clear start and end dates, or says Present |
| Contact fields | Name, email, phone, location, and links | Whether the fields are typed text, current, and easy to find |
| File type | Whether the uploaded file is accepted and readable | Whether the employer's instructions specify PDF, DOCX, or another format |

A checker may also flag columns, icons, text boxes, headers, footers, unusual symbols, or images. These elements can look polished while producing poor extracted text.

Read [ATS CV Checker: Free Scan Workflow Before You Hit Apply](https://yourunique.cv/articles/ats-cv-checker) for another practical pass through the same type of review. The repair method below focuses on what to do with the result.

## Step 1: Prepare one CV and one job description

Save a copy of the CV you plan to submit. Use the job description for the exact opening, not a similar role from the same company. Remove personal notes, comments, and tracked changes first.

Copy the full job description into a plain text document. Include the responsibilities, required qualifications, preferred qualifications, tools, certifications, and role title. Leave out navigation text, equal opportunity statements, and unrelated company content when the checker allows it.

Look for repeated or high-value terms. A required certification matters more than a casual adjective. A tool named in several responsibilities deserves more attention than a generic phrase such as fast-paced.

## Step 2: Run the scan

Upload the PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). The Free Tool returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. Its PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account.

Record four things before editing:

1. The score and what it appears to measure.
2. Missing must-have terms.
3. Sections or formatting warnings.
4. Any text that appears in the scan but is not visible in your CV.

Then paste the CV text into a plain text editor. Check the order. Your name should come before your contact details. Section headings should remain visible. Bullets should not merge into a paragraph. Dates should sit near the correct job.

You can also paste the job description into the [job description keyword extractor](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/job-description-keyword-extractor) to separate must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. It can optionally mark which terms already appear in your PDF. It is a sorting aid, not a reason to add skills you do not have.

If you want a tailored draft from your real profile facts, [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your CV, an optional LinkedIn URL, and the job description. You can keep your layout or pick a built-in template, then review the ATS read against that job. Still perform the plain-text paste test yourself.

## Step 3: Read the score without chasing it

A score is a comparison produced by that tool's rules. It is not a universal grade. It is also not an employer's Workday or Greenhouse score. A higher number can still hide a poor CV if the document repeats keywords without explaining the work.

Use the score as a prompt to inspect evidence. Ask these questions:

- Are the job's required skills present?
- Do they appear under the right role or project?
- Do your bullets explain how you used the skill?
- Are the terms written in a form a reader can recognize?
- Did a formatting error prevent important text from being read?

Give priority to truthful coverage. If the job asks for Salesforce and you used Salesforce to manage a pipeline, write that clearly. If you only read about Salesforce, do not add it as a skill. If you have equivalent experience under another name, explain the connection instead of copying a term without context.

## Scored sample: repair the evidence, not just the number

Imagine this sample CV receives a 62 out of 100 from a checker. The number is only an example. It is not a cutoff.

| Check | Before | Repair | After scan result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyword coverage | Includes “customer support” but not “ticketing system” | Adds “Resolved customer issues in Zendesk ticketing system” to the relevant role | Zendesk and ticketing system appear in context |
| Section detection | Uses “What I Know” for skills | Changes the heading to “Skills” | Skills section is easier to identify |
| Dates | Lists “2021 to 2023” for one job and “March 2023 to Present” for another | Uses “Mar 2021 to Feb 2023” and “Mar 2023 to Present” | Date pattern is consistent |
| Contact fields | Phone number appears as an image in the header | Types the phone number in the document body | Contact text appears in paste-back |
| File type | Exports a PDF with two columns and icons | Uses a simple one-column PDF after checking the employer instructions | Text order is readable |
| Score | 62 | Changes one item, then re-scans | 78, with fewer warnings |

The change from 62 to 78 does not prove the CV will pass an employer system. The improvement matters because the missing terms and contact details became readable. If the scan reaches a high number but the pasted text is scrambled, keep repairing the file.

## Common repairs that improve a real scan

### Put skills in context

A skills list helps a checker find terms, but experience bullets provide evidence. Write the tool, method, or certification in a sentence tied to an outcome.

Weak:

> Excel, reporting, inventory

Stronger:

> Built weekly Excel inventory reports that helped the operations team identify slow-moving stock.

Use the strongest truthful wording you can support. Add the job's exact term only when it matches your experience. Place a familiar abbreviation and its full form together when useful, such as “Search Engine Optimization (SEO).”

### Use standard section headings

Choose headings such as Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications, Projects, and Volunteer Experience. Avoid putting key facts only in a graphic, a sidebar, a header, or a footer.

Your contact line should contain typed text for your name, email address, phone number, city and region if relevant, and professional profile link if you include one. Test every link. Do not add a full street address unless required.

### Make dates unambiguous

Use one format throughout the CV. “Jan 2022 to May 2024” is clearer than a mixture of “2022,” “01/22,” and “Spring 2024.” For a current role, use “Present.” Check that each date belongs to the correct employer and that education dates do not look like employment dates.

### Check the requested file type

Follow the employer's application instructions. If they ask for DOCX, submit DOCX. If they accept PDF, a text-based PDF with selectable text is usually easier to inspect than a scanned image. Do not assume PDF is always preferred.

Open the exported file on another device. Select and copy the text. If you cannot select it, the file may be image-only. If copying produces random symbols or an illogical order, fix the source document and export again.

## The repair loop

Use a controlled loop. Changing everything at once makes it hard to know what helped.

1. Run the initial scan.
2. Fix one issue, such as a heading, date, contact field, or relevant keyword.
3. Save a new file with a clear version name.
4. Re-scan the new file with the same job description.
5. Compare the warnings and missing terms.
6. Paste the new PDF into a plain text editor.
7. Confirm that the must-have skills appear in context.
8. Keep the change only if it improves clarity and remains truthful.

Stop when the extracted text is clean, the required sections are recognizable, and the job's must-have skills appear in relevant bullets or sections. Do not keep editing to chase a vanity number. A repeated keyword can raise a tool result while making the document unpleasant to read.

Near the final review, [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv/sign-up) can create a job-specific CV from the facts in your profile and provide an ATS read against the pasted job. Treat that read as another diagnostic, not a hiring decision. You can also review the available [templates](https://yourunique.cv/templates) if your current layout causes extraction problems.

## Questions

### What does an ATS CV check measure?

An ATS CV check can compare keywords with a job description and flag missing sections, unclear dates, contact fields, or file types that may be difficult to parse. It cannot predict the exact result from an employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other hiring system.

### What is a good ATS score?

There is no universal passing score. Treat a score as a diagnostic signal. Read the missing keywords, section warnings, and job-specific gaps, then decide whether the CV is clear and truthful for that role.

### Should I add every missing keyword to my CV?

No. Add a missing term only when it accurately describes your experience, education, tools, or results. Do not claim skills or experience you do not have.

### How can I run a free ATS CV check?

Upload your CV PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). Review the match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The scan is for guidance and is not an employer's ATS score.

### Can YourUnique.cv rewrite my CV after the check?

[YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your profile facts and a job description to create a tailored CV, then provide an ATS read against that job. It does not invent experience, and its score is not the employer's Workday or Greenhouse number.
