An ats friendly template should use one column, ordinary text, clear section headings, and a file format the application accepts. Build it in Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Keep the design simple enough that the resume still makes sense when copied into plain text.
Use this order for most applications: name and contact details, summary, skills, experience, education, then optional extras. Avoid text boxes, layout tables, contact icons, photos, and multi-column skill grids. These elements can split, hide, or reorder information when an ATS reads the file.
The safest resume structure
Start with a single-column page. Put your name at the top, followed by contact information in normal text. Do not put contact details in a header, footer, sidebar, or graphic element. Some systems may not read those areas reliably.
Use familiar headings. An ATS can often identify sections more easily when you write “Summary,” “Skills,” “Experience,” and “Education” instead of creative alternatives such as “What I Bring” or “My Background.” Creative headings are not always a problem, but they create avoidable ambiguity.

OPTIONAL EXTRAS

Keep the section order stable when you tailor the document. You can change the content under a heading without changing the heading itself. For example, move the most relevant skills to the front of the Skills section, but do not rename the section to “Core Strengths” if the rest of the resume uses standard labels.
Font and margin rules
The goal is readable text, not a visually complex design. Choose one font for the whole document. Calibri, Arial, and Georgia are sensible options. Use 10 to 12 point text for body content. Set your name around 16 to 22 points and use modestly larger section headings.
Use standard margins, usually 1 inch on all sides. If your content barely spills onto a second page, reduce the margins slightly, but avoid compressing the page until the text is difficult to read. A two-page resume is better than tiny type and crowded spacing when your experience requires it.
| Element | Safe starting rule | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | One column, left aligned | Sidebars, floating sections, visual panels |
| Font | Calibri, Arial, or Georgia | Decorative or unusual fonts |
| Body size | 10 to 12 pt | Tiny text used to force one page |
| Margins | 1 inch on all sides | Very narrow margins and crowded lines |
| Headings | Summary, Skills, Experience, Education | Image-based or vague headings |
| Contact details | Normal text below your name | Icons, header-only contact information |
| File | Word or PDF when accepted | Screenshots or image-only PDFs |
Build the master version in Word or Google Docs. Word is useful when an application requests a DOCX file. Google Docs is useful for editing and exporting a clean copy, but inspect the exported file before uploading. Check that page breaks, bullets, dates, and spacing stayed intact.
What an ats friendly template looks like
This plain-text example is intentionally simple. It is a useful reference when building a Word or Google Docs version.

The sample uses searchable text, ordinary bullets, and consistent date formats. It also gives the reader enough context to understand each role without relying on color, logos, or graphics.
How to tailor the template without breaking it
First, keep a clean master copy. Save a new version for each job. Never edit the only copy of your resume while rushing to apply.
Next, read the job description and identify required skills, tools, certifications, job titles, and work methods. Add terms that accurately describe your background. Do not add a skill simply because it appears in the posting. The resume must remain factual.
Place the most relevant keywords where they belong. A software tool can sit in Skills and appear in a relevant Experience bullet. A certification belongs in Certifications or Education. A responsibility should appear in an accomplishment bullet if you performed it.
Keep the headings and section order intact. You can adjust the Summary, reorder Skills, and replace weaker bullets. Do not use a new text box to make a keyword fit beside another section. Do not create a two-column skills block to save space.
A practical customization process looks like this:
- Copy the master file and rename it for the employer and role.
- Update the Summary with the role's accurate language.
- Reorder Skills so the best matches appear first.
- Replace or revise five experience bullets that relate to the posting.
- Check that every added term is supported by your actual work.
- Export the requested file type and inspect it before uploading.
After the problem is clear, run the file through the ATS resume checker. It scans a resume PDF against a pasted job description and reports missing keywords and gaps. The result is a diagnostic, not a number from the employer's ATS. If you want a draft based on your real profile facts, you can also use YourUnique.cv, then perform the same plain-text check yourself.
Three layouts that can fail parsing
1. Sidebar resume
A sidebar often holds contact details, skills, or dates in a separate visual area. A parser may read the sidebar after the main content, combine lines in the wrong order, or omit some text. A single column removes that uncertainty.
2. Table-based resume
Tables can look tidy in Word, but they are risky when used to position sections. The text may be extracted row by row instead of in the intended reading order. Do not use a table to place a job title on the left and dates on the right. Use plain text, tabs only when they remain stable, or a simple line with separators.
3. Graphic or icon-heavy resume
Icons for email, phone, location, and social profiles add visual polish but may not communicate their meaning to a parser. Photos, logos, charts, rating bars, and image-based text create the same problem. Use text labels and ordinary characters instead.
A resume can still have hierarchy without these devices. Use font size, spacing, bold text, and consistent headings. Keep color limited and make sure the document remains readable in black and white.
Test the file before applying
Open the exported file and select all text. Copy it into a plain-text editor. Review the result from top to bottom. Your name should come first. Contact details should be readable. Headings should appear in the intended order. Job titles, employers, dates, bullets, and skills should not be mixed together.
Also search the plain-text copy for important terms from the posting. Confirm that punctuation did not replace a word and that a PDF export did not turn a section into an image. This test cannot predict every employer system, but it catches layout damage before you submit.

Once your resume is ready, YourUnique.cv can use your profile facts and a job description to create a tailored CV while keeping the layout you choose. You can also browse templates for a starting layout, then apply the same single-column rules and plain-text test.
After the resume is ready, you can open Job Radar to find live ATS career-page roles that fit the same profile. It matches public postings on company career pages, rather than importing listings from LinkedIn or Indeed.

Questions
- What is the safest layout for an ATS resume?
- A single-column layout with standard headings, left-aligned text, ordinary bullet points, and no text boxes, tables for layout, icons, photos, or multi-column skill grids is the safest starting point.
- Which fonts work well in an ats friendly template?
- Calibri, Arial, and Georgia are practical choices. Use 10 to 12 point body text, keep headings larger, and avoid decorative fonts that may parse inconsistently.
- Can I check whether my resume is ATS-friendly?
- Yes. Upload your resume PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). It reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps, but it is not the employer's Workday or Greenhouse score.
- Can YourUnique.cv help me find jobs after I fix my resume?
- Yes. After the resume is ready, [Job Radar](https://yourunique.cv/job-radar) can match your career profile against live public ATS postings. It does not search LinkedIn, Indeed, Naukri, or Workday.
