# ATS Optimized Resume Template: Word and Google Docs Versions That Don't Break

Use an ATS optimized resume template for Word or Google Docs with clean headings, safe fonts, and a single-column layout that parses without layout errors.

Start with a single-column **ATS optimized resume template** in Word or Google Docs. Use plain text, standard headings, a readable font, and normal spacing. Avoid design elements that place information in separate objects or columns.

The goal is simple: a recruiter should see a clean document, and an ATS should read each section in the correct order. No template can guarantee a particular employer result. Applicant systems differ, and a public checker is not the same system an employer uses.

## Use this section order

Keep the main resume in this sequence:

| Order | Section | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Name and contact | Full name, phone, professional email, city and state, LinkedIn URL if useful |
| 2 | Summary | Two to four lines focused on the target role and your relevant background |
| 3 | Skills | Plain-text skills grouped by a clear label, such as Technical Skills or Core Skills |
| 4 | Experience | Job title, employer, location, dates, and achievement bullets |
| 5 | Education | Degree, school, location, and graduation year if appropriate |
| 6 | Optional extras | Certifications, projects, publications, languages, or volunteer work when relevant |

Do not place contact details in a header or footer if you can avoid it. Put them in the document body at the top. Some systems read headers and footers inconsistently.

A related [ATS-friendly resume template](https://yourunique.cv/articles/ats-friendly-resume-template) also explains why simple layouts tend to be safer.

## Plain-text template you can copy

This is a downloadable-style example. Paste it into Microsoft Word or Google Docs, then replace the bracketed text. Keep the headings exactly as written unless the job requires a more specific standard heading.

```text
Use bullets for results, actions, and scope. Five strong bullets across your most recent role is a useful starting point, but the right number depends on your experience. Remove old or repetitive content before adding more text.
## Word and Google Docs setup rules
Build the template in either application. These settings reduce avoidable layout problems.
| Setting | Safe choice | Check before sending |
|---|---|---|
| Font | Calibri, Arial, or Georgia | Use one font throughout the main document |
| Font size | 10 to 12 pt for body text | Keep headings larger through size or plain formatting |
| Margins | Standard margins, about 1 inch | Reduce only if content barely exceeds the page |
| Alignment | Left aligned | Keep dates readable and consistent |
| File type | DOCX when requested, PDF when accepted | Open the exported file and inspect it |
| Headings | Summary, Skills, Experience, Education | Use text headings, not graphic labels |
| Page numbers | Optional in the body or footer | Do not use a footer for essential information |
In Word, use paragraph formatting and built-in heading styles only when they produce the appearance you want. Do not rely on floating objects. In Google Docs, use normal paragraphs, simple bold headings, and regular line spacing. Download the finished file as DOCX or PDF, then reopen that downloaded version.
A PDF can still have parsing problems if it is an image, contains unusual reading order, or was exported from a complicated design. Check that you can select and copy the text. If you cannot select the words, the file may be image-based.
## Three layouts that can fail parsing
### 1. Two-column resume with a skills sidebar
A sidebar may look efficient. The parser may read the entire left column first, then the right column, or mix dates with bullets. Your experience can appear out of order.
Use one column instead. Put skills under a normal Skills heading and list them with separators or bullets.
### 2. Contact details inside icons and text boxes
A phone icon, envelope icon, and LinkedIn logo may be invisible to a text parser. A text box can also be treated as a separate object or skipped. The result may contain your name but not your phone number or email.
Write this instead:
```text
Denver, CO | 303-555-0199 | name@email.com | linkedin.com/in/name
```
### 3. Tables used to line up dates and employers
Tables can make a resume look neat, but they are a poor choice for layout. The system may read a row from left to right, column by column, or place dates before the job title. A table used for actual data can also create unpredictable extraction.
Use plain paragraphs. Put the job title and employer on one line, then the location and dates on the same line or the next line.
Other elements to leave out include photos, decorative rating bars, progress meters, unusual symbols, and multi-column skill grids. They consume space without adding reliable text.
## Customize one template for one job
Tailoring does not mean rebuilding the design. Keep the structure fixed. Change the words inside the existing sections.
### 1. Read the job description
Mark repeated requirements, named software, certifications, job functions, and industry terms. Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. Do not add a skill you do not have.
The [job description keyword extractor](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/job-description-keyword-extractor) can list must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves from pasted job text. With an optional resume PDF, it can also show which terms are already in the file. Treat the output as an editing aid, not permission to claim missing experience.
### 2. Edit the summary
Mention the target role or function and the strongest matching areas. Keep it factual. Do not copy a job description sentence word for word if it does not describe your work.
Weak:
```text
Experienced professional seeking a challenging opportunity.
```
Better:
```text
Customer support specialist with four years of experience handling SaaS tickets, account questions, and renewal escalations. Skilled in Zendesk, Salesforce, and knowledge-base updates.
```
### 3. Reorder real skills
Move relevant skills to the front of the Skills section. Use the employer's spelling when it accurately describes your experience. For example, use “Microsoft Excel” if that is the wording in the posting and you have used it.
Do not create a keyword block. Every important skill should also appear in a relevant experience bullet when possible.
### 4. Revise experience bullets
Keep the employer, title, dates, and headings stable. Change bullet order so the most relevant work appears first. Add a tool, task, result, or scope detail only when it is true.
Before:
```text
- Helped with customer issues and updated records.
```
After:
```text
- Resolved 35 to 45 customer tickets per day in Zendesk and documented recurring issues for the product team.
```
The second version gives the reader a task, tool, volume, and business context. Do not invent a metric. If you cannot quantify the result, describe the work clearly.
### 5. Protect the headings
Use standard headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, and Education. Do not replace Experience with a graphic label or an abbreviation that could be unclear. Keep each job under the Experience heading. Keep certifications and projects in their own sections when they matter to the role.
Run the finished file through the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). It accepts a resume PDF and a pasted job description, then reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account. This is a file review, not a Workday or Greenhouse score.
If you want a tailored draft from your actual profile facts, [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume, an optional LinkedIn URL, and a job description or job link. You can keep your layout or select a built-in template. Read the draft carefully and remove anything you cannot support.
## Test the file before applying
The plain-text paste test catches problems that visual inspection misses. Open the final DOCX or PDF. Select all text. Paste it into Notepad, TextEdit in plain-text mode, or another basic editor.
Check these points:
- Your name appears first.
- Contact details appear directly after your name.
- Summary, Skills, Experience, and Education appear in the intended order.
- Each employer stays attached to the correct job title and dates.
- Bullets remain under the correct job.
- No section disappears.
- Symbols have not replaced letters or spaces.
Then inspect the visual file. Look for a blank second page, broken bullets, clipped text, inconsistent dates, and large empty areas. Test the version you plan to upload, not an earlier draft.
[YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv/sign-up) is another option if you want to keep profile facts in one place while tailoring a resume to a specific job. You can also review simple [resume templates](https://yourunique.cv/templates) before choosing a layout. Either way, use the plain-text test before submission.
## Questions
### What is the safest layout for an ATS optimized resume template?
A single-column layout with standard section headings, left-aligned text, normal paragraphs, and no text boxes or layout tables is the safest choice for most ATS submissions.
### Should I use Word or Google Docs for an ATS resume?
Either can work. Use Word when the employer requests a DOCX file, and export a clean PDF when PDF is accepted. In Google Docs, check the downloaded file because page breaks and spacing can change during export.
### Can I use icons, a photo, or a skills grid on an ATS resume?
No. Icons, photos, text boxes, and multi-column skill grids can interrupt parsing or hide contact details. Write contact information and skills as plain text.
### How can I test whether my resume reads correctly?
Paste the resume text into a plain-text editor and check the order of the name, contact details, headings, dates, employers, and bullets. You can also use the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker), but its result is not an employer's Workday or Greenhouse number.
### Can YourUnique.cv create a tailored ATS resume?
Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your profile facts and a job description to draft a tailored CV, then provide an ATS read against that job. Review every claim before applying.
