ATS Resume Checker Tool: What the Number Means and What to Change

Use an ATS resume checker tool to find keyword, format, section, and contact-field problems, then repair your resume with a simple recheck loop.

A good ATS resume checker tool helps you find repairable problems before you apply. Use it to inspect keyword coverage, section detection, dates, contact fields, and file parsing. Do not treat the number as a hiring prediction. It is a diagnostic signal from one checker, not the score used by an employer’s Workday, Greenhouse, or other system.

The practical goal is simple: make the resume readable as plain text, then make sure the job’s must-have skills appear accurately and in context.

What an ATS resume checker tool can tell you

Most checkers compare your resume with a job description and inspect how the file is structured. The exact rules vary. One tool may reward a keyword match, while another may focus more on whether it can identify your dates or headings.

Area checkedWhat the tool may look forWhat you should repair
KeywordsJob title, skills, tools, certifications, methods, and industry termsAdd accurate terms that describe your real experience. Use the same wording as the job post when it fits.
SectionsContact details, summary, experience, education, skills, certificationsUse clear headings such as “Professional Experience” and “Education.”
DatesStart and end months, years, current role labels, consistent orderUse one format throughout, such as Jan 2022 to Mar 2024.
Contact fieldsName, email, phone, location, LinkedIn URLPut these in normal text near the top. Avoid placing them only in a header or image.
File typeWhether the uploaded PDF can be read and its text extractedUse a selectable-text PDF unless the application gives different instructions.
Layout parsingColumns, tables, text boxes, icons, headers, and footersRemove decorative elements that interrupt reading order.

A checker may also flag missing experience, weak alignment, or absent skills. Treat these as prompts to investigate. They are not proof that you are unqualified.

For more context on interpreting results, see ATS Resume Checker: What the Number Means and What to Change. The same principle applies to a broader resume checker: use the output to find edits, not to chase a perfect number.

How to run a resume through a checker

Use the same resume file and the same job description for each scan. Otherwise, you will not know which change affected the result.

1. Prepare the two inputs

Save the resume as a PDF with selectable text. Copy the complete job description into a plain-text note. Include the requirements, responsibilities, tools, qualifications, and preferred skills. Remove navigation text and unrelated page content if you copied the job from a website.

2. Run the first scan

Upload the resume and paste the job description. Record the score, missing keywords, detected sections, and any parsing warnings. Save the original file so you can compare it with later versions.

You can run this first pass with the ATS resume checker. It accepts a resume PDF and a pasted job description, then reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account. The number is specific to that tool and input. It is not a Workday or Greenhouse number.

If you want a draft based on your actual profile facts, you can paste the same job into YourUnique.cv. Its paid product can keep your existing layout or use a built-in template, then provide an ATS read against the selected job. Review every line before using it.

3. Inspect the extracted text

Copy the text from the PDF and paste it into a plain-text editor. Read it from top to bottom. Check whether your name, email, phone, headings, dates, company names, job titles, and bullets appear in the right order.

This test catches problems that a score can hide. A two-column resume may look polished on screen but paste in a scrambled order. A text box may disappear. An icon may replace your phone number with nothing. Fix the file before adding more keywords.

How to read the score without chasing vanity numbers

A score is useful when you can connect it to a concrete problem. It is a vanity number when you raise it by repeating keywords, adding unrelated terms, or changing the document without improving readability.

Do not invent a universal pass mark. Checkers calculate results differently, and employers configure their systems differently. A public checker cannot prove how an employer’s system will process the same file.

Read the report in this order:

  1. Parsing: Did the tool find the full resume, or did content disappear?
  2. Must-have skills: Which required skills are missing, and do you genuinely have them?
  3. Context: Does each skill appear in a work bullet, project, certification, or skills section where appropriate?
  4. Sections and dates: Are your experience, education, and contact details clear?
  5. File type: Can the text be selected, copied, and pasted without distortion?

A higher number after a keyword was repeated five times is not necessarily an improvement. One accurate bullet with a tool and result is stronger than a keyword list with no evidence.

Scored sample: before and after

The figures below are an illustration from a hypothetical checker. They are not employer cutoffs and do not represent a universal scoring system.

Before

Resume content:

  • Summary: “Marketing professional with digital experience.”
  • Experience: “Managed campaigns and worked with teams.”
  • Skills: “Marketing, communication, analytics.”
  • File: PDF with a two-column layout and phone number shown as an icon.
  • Job requirements: paid search, Google Ads, GA4, conversion tracking, monthly reporting.

Illustrative checker result: 54/100

Reported problems:

  • Google Ads, GA4, and conversion tracking were missing.
  • The phone field was not detected.
  • The experience section was detected, but the summary used a vague title.
  • The two-column text pasted in the wrong order.
  • Dates appeared as years only, with no months.

After

Repaired content:

  • Summary: “Digital Marketing Specialist with 4 years of experience managing paid search campaigns, Google Ads, GA4 reporting, and conversion tracking for ecommerce teams.”
  • Experience bullet: “Managed Google Ads campaigns with a monthly budget of $25,000, used conversion tracking to identify waste, and reduced cost per acquisition by 18% in six months.”
  • Experience bullet: “Built monthly GA4 reports for channel performance, landing-page conversion, and budget recommendations.”
  • Skills: “Google Ads, GA4, paid search, conversion tracking, monthly reporting.”
  • File: Single-column selectable-text PDF with phone, email, and LinkedIn URL in normal text.
  • Dates: “May 2021 to Present” and “Jun 2019 to Apr 2021.”

Illustrative checker result: 86/100

The improvement came from accurate evidence, clearer fields, and a readable file. It did not come from copying every phrase into the resume. If you have not used Google Ads or GA4, do not add them. Mark the gap and decide whether the role still fits.

Use a repair loop, not a rewrite spiral

Change one thing at a time. Re-scan after each meaningful group of edits. If you change the layout, keywords, dates, and bullets together, you cannot tell which repair worked.

Start with file parsing. Then repair headings and contact fields. Next, add accurate must-have skills in context. After that, standardize dates and refine bullets. Stop when the text paste-back is clean and the job’s must-have skills appear in relevant sections.

The number can stop rising while the resume keeps improving. That is acceptable. Readability and truth matter more than a score increase.

Ten-item ATS resume repair checklist

  • Save a copy of the original resume before editing.
  • Confirm the PDF contains selectable text, not only an image.
  • Paste the resume into a plain-text editor and check the reading order.
  • Put your name, email, phone, location, and LinkedIn URL in normal text.
  • Use clear headings for summary, experience, education, and skills.
  • Standardize dates across every role and qualification.
  • Compare the resume with the job post and mark genuine must-have skills.
  • Add accurate missing skills in a bullet or project context, not through repetition.
  • Remove layouts, icons, columns, or tables that damage the text order.
  • Re-scan after the repair, then repeat the plain-text paste test.

Use the job description keyword extractor if you need help separating must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. It can also mark which keywords already appear in your PDF. It cannot tell you to claim skills you do not have.

If you want a tailored draft rather than manual edits, sign up for YourUnique.cv. Upload your resume, optionally add a LinkedIn URL, and provide the job description or link. The resulting CV uses profile facts only. Treat the ATS read as another diagnostic, not as an employer result.

Apply-today checklist

Before you submit, verify these five items:

  • The file is the requested type, usually a selectable-text PDF when no other instruction is given.
  • Headings are clear and the pasted text follows the correct reading order.
  • The skills section and experience bullets contain accurate terms from the job post.
  • At least five relevant bullets show action, context, tools, or results instead of vague duties.
  • You ran the ATS resume checker again and passed the plain-text paste test.

Then stop editing. Submit the version that is accurate, readable, and tailored to the role, not the version with the biggest vanity number.

Questions

What does an ATS resume checker tool score mean?
The score is a diagnostic estimate based on the checker’s own rules, such as keyword overlap, section detection, dates, contact fields, and file parsing. It is not a Workday or Greenhouse score and does not predict a hiring decision.
What should I fix first when my resume score is low?
Fix missing must-have skills that you genuinely have, unclear section headings, incomplete contact fields, inconsistent dates, and file-format problems. Then check whether the extracted text reads correctly.
Can I add every keyword from the job description?
No. Add a keyword only when it accurately describes your experience, training, tools, or results. Do not claim a skill or qualification you do not have.
Where can I run my resume through a free checker?
Upload your resume PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). It returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The result is not an employer ATS number, and the scanned PDF is not saved to an account.
Can YourUnique.cv help rewrite a resume for a job?
[YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your profile facts and a job description to create a tailored CV, then provide an ATS read against that job. It does not invent experience, and its score is not the employer’s ATS score.
