# ATS Resume Checker: What the Number Means and What to Change

Use an ATS resume checker without chasing a vanity score. Learn what to fix in keywords, sections, dates, files, and plain-text parsing before you apply.

> An ATS resume checker can find missing job keywords, sections, dates, contact fields, and file problems, but its score is only a diagnostic; repair one issue at a time and confirm the resume survives a plain-text paste test.

An ATS resume checker gives you a fast diagnostic before you apply. It can flag missing terms from the job post, weak section labels, unclear dates, contact-field problems, and file issues. The number is not a universal pass mark, and it does not predict whether an employer will interview you.

To use one, upload your resume, paste the target job description, read the detailed warnings, and repair the highest-value issue first. Change one thing, scan again, and stop when the job's must-have skills appear in honest context and a plain-text paste keeps the resume in the right order.

## What an ATS resume checker actually does

Most checkers compare your resume with a job description and inspect common resume structures. The exact rules vary by product. Some checkers focus on keyword overlap. Others flag graphics, missing sections, date formats, contact details, or unsupported file types.

A checker is useful as a pre-submit inspection tool. It can catch a missing "SQL" keyword when the posting clearly requires SQL. It can also show that your dates are difficult to read or that your phone number disappeared during parsing.

It cannot prove that an employer uses the same software, settings, or ranking process. It cannot judge the full quality of your work. Treat the result like a warning light on a dashboard, not a hiring verdict.

Free tools may limit scans or hide detailed suggestions. Jobscan is useful for comparing a resume against a job post and finding term gaps. Resume Worded is useful for general resume feedback and wording checks. Neither can prove that a particular employer's ATS will produce the same result. A plain-text test adds a practical check that any score alone misses.

## How to run a resume through a checker

1. Save a copy of the resume for the specific job. Keep your master resume separate.
2. Copy the complete job description, including the requirements and preferred qualifications.
3. Upload the resume in the format you plan to submit. Do not scan a different file type and submit another.
4. Paste the job description into the comparison field, if the tool provides one.
5. Review the report by category. Start with must-have skills, missing sections, and parsing errors.
6. Make one related change. For example, add one accurate skill to a work bullet rather than changing the whole document.
7. Re-scan the updated file. Record whether the warning disappeared and whether the resume still reads naturally.
8. Copy the final document into a plain-text editor. Check the order, symbols, dates, headings, and contact details.

Do not paste a generic resume into ten tools and keep editing until every tool gives a high number. That creates noise. Use the job post as the reference and the text paste as the final technical test.

## How to read the number

A score usually combines several checks. The categories may have different weights, and the tool may not explain those weights. A higher number can result from adding many matching words, even when the resume becomes repetitive or vague.

Ask four questions:

- Which required skill is missing or only implied?
- Is the term present in a section that gives it meaning?
- Did the tool parse the sections, dates, and contact details correctly?
- Does the resume still describe my real experience clearly?

Ignore a number that rises only because you copied a block of keywords. A hiring reader needs evidence. "Python" in a skills list is weaker than a bullet that says, "Built Python scripts to clean 2 million customer records and cut weekly reporting time by 30%." Use the skill only if the statement is true.

There is no employer-approved ATS score cutoff. A score from one checker cannot be compared fairly with a score from another checker. Even repeated scans in the same tool may change when you alter the job text or the uploaded file.

## What typical checkers measure

| Area | What the checker may inspect | What you should verify yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Exact or related terms from the job post | Must-have skills appear where your experience supports them |
| Sections | Headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, Education | Each section is clearly labeled and placed in a normal order |
| Dates | Month and year, year ranges, current role labels | Dates are consistent, readable, and easy to associate with each job |
| File type | PDF, DOCX, or another accepted format | You follow the application instructions and test the submitted file |
| Contact fields | Name, email, phone, location, profile links | Details appear as text, not only in a header, footer, image, or icon |
| Formatting | Columns, tables, graphics, symbols, and unusual fonts | The resume remains readable when copied as plain text |

### Keyword coverage versus keyword stuffing

Start with the job's must-have qualifications. A requirement such as "project management," "Salesforce," or "HIPAA compliance" should appear in your resume if you have that experience. Use the same wording where it fits. Also include a common abbreviation when useful, such as "search engine optimization (SEO)."

Then add context. Put the skill in a work bullet, project description, certification, or skills section. Do not repeat a term in every bullet. Do not list tools you have never used.

Check the job post for different forms of the same idea. "Client onboarding" and "customer onboarding" may both matter. If your experience supports both, write a natural sentence that includes both terms once. If the posting asks for a license or certification, place the exact credential in the relevant section.

### Missing sections

Use standard headings that a parser and a reader can recognize:

- Summary or Professional Summary
- Skills
- Professional Experience or Work Experience
- Education
- Certifications, Projects, or Volunteer Experience when relevant

Avoid replacing "Work Experience" with a creative heading such as "Where I Made an Impact." The latter may look interesting but gives less information to a parser. A missing section warning can also appear when the heading is inside a graphic, text box, header, or footer.

### Dates and contact fields

Use a consistent format, such as "May 2021 to August 2024" or "05/2021 to 08/2024." Use the same style throughout. Put the date near the job title and employer so the relationship is clear after parsing.

Place your name, phone, email, city and state, and relevant profile link in the main document text. Avoid using icons as the only labels. A phone icon may copy as an odd character or vanish. Do not put essential contact details only in a header or footer.

### File type

Follow the employer's instructions first. If the application accepts DOCX, use DOCX if your PDF has parsing problems. If it requests PDF, submit a text-based PDF rather than an image scan. Keep the filename simple, such as `Jordan-Lee-Project-Manager-Resume.pdf`.

Open the exact file you will upload. Select all, copy, and paste into a plain-text editor. If the first section appears at the bottom, columns are interleaved, or bullet characters become empty squares, fix the file before applying.

## Scored sample: repair the resume, not the number

The following scores are fictional examples from one hypothetical checker. They illustrate a repair process. They are not employer standards.

### Before

**Target role:** Customer Success Manager

**Checker result: 54**

- Keyword match: 48%
- Sections detected: Summary, Experience
- Date warning: inconsistent formats
- Contact warning: email detected, phone not detected
- File warning: two-column PDF may read out of order

**Resume excerpt:**

> Account manager with experience helping customers and improving retention. Managed accounts and worked with internal teams.
>
> Account Manager, BrightPath, 2021 to Present
> - Managed 80 customer accounts.
> - Helped customers use the product.
> - Worked with sales and support.
>
> Skills: Communication, teamwork, customer service

The problem is not simply the 54. The resume gives little evidence for the target role. It omits terms such as customer onboarding, renewal, churn, CRM, and customer health. It also has no clear education or certifications section, no phone detected, and a potentially unsafe two-column layout.

### After

**Checker result: 82**

- Keyword match: 81%
- Sections detected: Summary, Skills, Experience, Education
- Date warning: none
- Contact warning: none
- File warning: none after DOCX test

**Resume excerpt:**

> Customer Success Manager with 4 years of experience managing 80 B2B accounts, leading customer onboarding, and improving renewal performance. Use Salesforce to track customer health, risks, product adoption, and renewal activity.
>
> Account Manager, BrightPath | May 2021 to Present
> - Managed 80 B2B customer accounts and maintained quarterly renewal plans in Salesforce.
> - Led onboarding for 25 new customers, coordinating training with product and support teams.
> - Monitored customer health and adoption signals, reducing at-risk account response time by 35%.
> - Partnered with sales on expansion opportunities and supported a 92% gross renewal rate.
>
> Skills: Customer onboarding, renewal management, customer health, Salesforce, churn analysis, stakeholder communication
>
> Education
> Bachelor of Business Administration, North City University | 2017 to 2021

The improved version uses the target terms in context. It also uses standard headings, consistent dates, a readable contact block, and a single-column DOCX. The 82 is still only a tool result. The real stopping point is that the resume matches the role honestly and survives the text test.

## Ten-item fix checklist

Use this list after the first scan. Recheck after making the repairs.

- [ ] Copy the complete target job description into the checker.
- [ ] Mark the must-have skills, credentials, tools, and job functions.
- [ ] Add accurate must-have terms to relevant bullets or sections.
- [ ] Replace vague phrases with evidence, action, scope, or results.
- [ ] Use standard headings for Summary, Skills, Experience, and Education.
- [ ] Put the name, email, phone, location, and profile link in main text.
- [ ] Make job titles, employers, and dates easy to associate.
- [ ] Use one date format across every role and credential.
- [ ] Follow the requested file type and remove risky columns, graphics, and text boxes.
- [ ] Change one thing, re-scan, then copy the final file into a plain-text editor.

Stop when the paste-back is clean, the must-have skills appear in honest context, and further edits would only repeat terms or reduce readability.

## Apply-today checklist

Before you submit, confirm five items:

- [ ] The file type matches the application instructions.
- [ ] Headings are standard and visible as text.
- [ ] The job's relevant skills appear in accurate sections and bullets.
- [ ] At least five work bullets show actions and outcomes where the experience allows it.
- [ ] The full resume passes the plain-text paste test in the correct order.

YourUnique.cv can take a pasted job description and write a resume for that role. Still run the finished file through the plain-text paste test before you submit.

## Questions

### What does an ATS resume checker score mean?

The score is a diagnostic from that tool's rules. It may reflect keyword matches, section labels, dates, contact fields, formatting, and file type. It does not predict an employer's decision or represent a universal ATS score.

### What is a good ATS resume score?

There is no universal passing score. Compare the report with the target job description, fix missing must-have skills and parsing problems, then confirm that the resume remains readable as plain text.

### Should I add every keyword from a job description?

No. Add skills and terms that accurately describe your experience. Put important skills in a relevant summary, skills section, work bullet, project, or certification instead of copying a keyword list.

### Is a PDF safe for an ATS resume?

A text-based PDF often works, but file support varies by application system. Follow the employer's instructions. If no format is specified, test the PDF by copying all text into a plain-text editor and checking the order and characters.

### Can Jobscan or Resume Worded prove that my resume will pass?

No. Jobscan and Resume Worded are resume analysis tools that can help compare text with a job post and flag common issues. Their reports cannot prove how a specific employer's system will parse or rank your application.
