# ATS Resume Scanner: How to Test, Read the Score, and Fix What Matters

Use an ATS resume scanner to test keywords, sections, dates, file type, and text parsing. Read the score, repair the file, and recheck before applying.

> Use an ATS resume scanner as a diagnostic: compare your resume with the job description, repair missing keywords and parsing problems, then re-scan until the text pastes cleanly and must-have skills appear in context.

The fastest way to use an ATS resume scanner is to compare your resume with the exact job description, inspect the missing skills and parsing gaps, fix one issue, and scan again. Stop when the text pastes back in the right order and the job's must-have skills appear in honest, relevant context.

A scanner is a diagnostic tool. It is not a copy of the employer's hiring system. Do not chase a public score as if it were a guaranteed pass mark.

## What an ATS resume scanner can tell you

Applicant tracking systems may read resumes before a recruiter reviews them. A resume checker can imitate parts of that process by looking at your document and the job post together. Common checks include:

| Check | What it can reveal | What you should repair |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Whether important skills, tools, job titles, and phrases from the post appear in your resume | Add accurate terms where your experience supports them. Use the wording from the post when it is truthful. |
| Sections | Whether education, experience, skills, and contact information are easy to identify | Use familiar headings such as Experience, Education, Skills, and Certifications. |
| Dates | Whether employment and education dates can be read consistently | Use a clear format such as Jan 2022 to Mar 2024 or 01/2022 to 03/2024. |
| File type | Whether the uploaded file is likely to be readable by the checker | Follow the application instructions. Use PDF when allowed, or DOCX when required. |
| Text order | Whether columns, tables, icons, and text boxes produce a sensible reading sequence | Paste the extracted text into a plain-text editor and correct confusing order. |
| Contact fields | Whether your name, email, phone, location, and links are visible as text | Put contact details in the main document area, not only in a header, footer, or image. |

These checks help you find preventable problems. They cannot prove how a particular employer's system will process your file. Different employers use different software, settings, workflows, and human review.

## How to run a resume through a checker

Use the job description for the specific role. A generic scan can tell you whether a document is readable, but it cannot show whether the file fits this opening.

### 1. Prepare the two inputs

Have these ready:

- Your final resume PDF, or the file type requested by the employer.
- The complete job description, including responsibilities, requirements, tools, and qualifications.

Remove unrelated job posts from the text. Keep the employer's wording intact. If the post says "customer relationship management," a resume that says only "client database work" may not receive credit for the same idea, even if the experience is related.

### 2. Upload and paste

Upload the resume. Paste the job description into the checker. Review the returned score, keyword list, section warnings, and gaps. Save the original result so you can compare the next scan.

You can run this process with the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). It accepts a resume PDF and a pasted job description, then reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. It scans the PDF for the result and does not save it to an account.

If you want a draft from facts already in your profile, [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume, optional LinkedIn URL, and the target job description. It creates a CV from those profile facts. Still perform the plain-text test yourself.

### 3. Record the useful findings

Do not copy every warning into your resume. Sort the results into four groups:

1. Missing must-have skill that you genuinely have.
2. Missing tool, certification, or job title that you genuinely have.
3. Parsing or layout problem.
4. Optional phrase with no strong connection to your background.

Fix the first three groups. Ignore the fourth unless it describes real work you can support.

## How to read the score without chasing vanity numbers

A score is useful for comparison. It can show whether version B is more aligned with the job description than version A. It cannot tell you that an employer will reject a resume below a specific number. Do not invent a cutoff.

A high score can still hide serious problems. For example, a resume may repeat a keyword in a skills list but provide no evidence in the experience section. It may also score well while placing dates in a confusing order or hiding contact information in a graphic.

A lower score can be reasonable when you do not meet every preferred requirement. Do not add a skill you lack to raise the number. Do not claim experience you have not gained. Instead, decide whether the gap is a learnable preference, a hard requirement, or a reason to skip the role.

Use this reading order:

### Read must-have coverage first

Look for required skills, tools, certifications, languages, and years of experience. If you have the skill, place it where the reader can verify it. A skills section helps scanning. A work bullet gives the skill meaning.

### Check context next

The phrase should connect to an action, result, project, or responsibility. "SQL" in a keyword list is weaker than "Used SQL to build weekly revenue reports from customer transaction data." Use your real scope. Do not inflate it.

### Check structure and parsing

A good keyword match cannot compensate for a broken document. Check the section order, date format, contact fields, and extracted text. A recruiter should see the same story in the PDF and in pasted text.

## Scored sample: before and after

Consider a marketing operations role that requires Salesforce, HubSpot, lead scoring, campaign reporting, and Excel. The applicant has used all five tools and methods, but the first resume version does not explain them clearly.

| Version | Scanner result | What the scan found |
|---|---:|---|
| Before | 54/100 | Salesforce appears once in a sidebar. HubSpot is absent. Dates use mixed formats. A two-column layout scrambles the work history when pasted. |
| After | 82/100 | Salesforce and HubSpot appear in the Skills section and an experience bullet. Lead scoring, campaign reporting, and Excel appear in context. Dates use one format. Text order is clean. |

The increase does not mean the second resume will receive an employer score of 82. It means this checker found stronger alignment and cleaner extraction for this job description.

Before bullet:

> Managed marketing projects and reports for company campaigns.

After bullet, if accurate:

> Built HubSpot campaign reports and used Salesforce lead scoring data to help the sales team prioritize inbound leads; maintained weekly Excel performance summaries.

The second bullet works better because it names the tools, connects them to work, and explains the output. It does not add an invented result or unsupported claim.

## Common repairs that matter

### Use standard headings

Choose headings that describe the content directly. Use Experience instead of a creative label such as "Where I Made an Impact." Use Skills, Education, Certifications, and Projects where appropriate.

### Make dates consistent

Avoid a mixture of "2021 to Present," "03/20 to 08/22," and "March 2018." Pick one readable pattern. Include months when they help explain short roles or employment gaps. Make sure the text layer contains the dates, rather than placing them inside an image.

### Put contact details in text

Include your name, phone, email, city and state or country, and relevant professional links. Keep these fields in the document body when possible. Headers and footers may be extracted differently by different software.

### Choose the required file type

Read the application instructions first. If the employer requests DOCX, send DOCX. If PDF is accepted, use a selectable-text PDF. Do not submit a scanned image of a resume unless the employer specifically asks for it.

### Keep the layout readable

Single-column layouts are easier to test. Tables, columns, icons, text boxes, charts, and decorative graphics can change extraction order. A designed template is acceptable only if the resulting text remains logical.

For more testing guidance, see [Resume Scanner: Score, Recheck, Repeat Until the Text Pastes Clean](https://yourunique.cv/articles/resume-scanner). For layout options, review [resume templates](https://yourunique.cv/templates), then test the exported file rather than trusting the preview.

## The one-change repair loop

Use a controlled loop. Changing ten things at once makes it difficult to know what helped.

1. Run the original resume against the exact job description.
2. Write down the score, missing must-haves, section warnings, and parsing problems.
3. Fix one category, such as a missing skill or a broken heading.
4. Export a new file using the requested file type.
5. Paste the file's text into a plain-text editor.
6. Check that your name, contact details, headings, jobs, dates, and bullets appear in the correct order.
7. Re-scan the new file against the same job description.
8. Compare the result with the original. Keep the change only if it improves accuracy or readability.
9. Repeat until the must-have skills appear in honest context and the paste-back text is clean.
10. Stop. Do not keep adding keywords after the document becomes repetitive or less readable.

This process protects you from keyword stuffing. It also catches a common mistake: editing the source document but uploading an old PDF.

## Apply-today checklist

Before you submit, confirm each item:

- [ ] The file type matches the employer's instructions.
- [ ] The PDF or DOCX contains selectable text, not only an image.
- [ ] Headings use clear labels such as Experience, Skills, and Education.
- [ ] Your name, email, phone, location, and relevant links are visible as text.
- [ ] Employment and education dates use one consistent format.
- [ ] The job's must-have skills appear where they are true.
- [ ] Skills appear in context in relevant experience, project, or certification entries.
- [ ] At least five bullets have been edited for this job where the experience supports it.
- [ ] The file passes the plain-text paste test in a sensible order.
- [ ] You ran the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) again with the same job description.

You can also use [YourUnique.cv's resume builder](https://yourunique.cv/sign-up) to create a targeted CV from your real profile facts, then review the exported file with the same checklist. The final test is simple: the document must be truthful, readable, relevant to the job, and clean when its text is pasted into plain text.

## Questions

### What does an ATS resume scanner score mean?

An ATS resume scanner score is a diagnostic comparison between your resume and a job description. It may reflect keyword coverage, sections, formatting, or parsing. It is not the score from an employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other hiring system.

### What should I fix when my ATS score is low?

Start with missing must-have skills, unclear section headings, unreadable dates, missing contact fields, and file type problems. Add only skills and experience you genuinely have, then re-scan.

### Can a high ATS score guarantee an interview?

No. A high score cannot prove that an employer's system will rank your resume the same way, and it cannot replace relevant evidence, clear writing, or human review.

### Which free tool can I use to test my resume?

Use the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) to upload a resume PDF and paste a job description. It returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account.

### Can YourUnique.cv help rewrite a targeted resume?

Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume or LinkedIn URL, a job description or job link, and your profile facts to create a targeted CV. It also provides an ATS read against that job, but its result is not an employer ATS score.
