An ats scanner free can help you find repairable resume problems before you submit an application. Use it to check keyword coverage, section headings, dates, contact fields, and file parsing. Treat the number as a diagnostic signal, not as a hiring prediction.

The useful stopping point is simple: the text pastes back cleanly, the file opens correctly, and the job’s must-have skills appear accurately in relevant experience. A higher score by itself is not a reason to keep editing.

What an ATS scanner free actually checks

Public checkers use their own tests. They may compare your resume with a job description, inspect the document structure, or look for standard fields. An employer may use a different system and configuration. No public score proves what an employer’s ATS will produce.

AreaWhat the checker may inspectWhat you should repair
KeywordsWords and phrases shared by your resume and the job postAdd accurate skills, tools, certifications, and job terms in context
SectionsHeadings such as Experience, Education, Skills, and CertificationsUse clear headings and keep content under the correct heading
DatesMonth and year patterns, order, and readable employment rangesUse one format consistently, such as Jan 2022 to Mar 2024
Contact fieldsName, email, phone, location, and linksPut contact details in selectable body text, not only in a header graphic
File typeWhether the uploaded PDF can be read and parsed as textScan the final PDF and test whether its text can be selected and pasted

Some checkers also flag tables, columns, icons, headers, footers, unusual fonts, and image-based text. These are parsing risks, not automatic proof that a resume will fail. Check the actual document instead of changing every design choice on suspicion.

How to run the scan

Use the resume file you plan to send. Do not scan an editable draft and submit a different export. Use the job description for the specific role, including the requirements and responsibilities.

  1. Save your resume as a text-based PDF.
  2. Copy the complete job description into the checker.
  3. Upload the PDF.
  4. Record the score, missing keywords, section warnings, and parsing gaps.
  5. Open the PDF and select text with your cursor.
  6. Paste that text into a plain-text editor.
  7. Compare the pasted order with the visual document.

If the paste starts in the wrong place, loses dates, merges columns, or drops contact details, repair the document before chasing keywords. A well-matched resume that cannot be read reliably is still a problem.

For a broader explanation of this process, see ATS Resume Checker: What the Number Means and What to Change. You can also compare the approach in ATS Scanner: Score, Recheck, Repeat Until the Text Pastes Clean.

How to read the number without chasing vanity points

A score is useful when it points to a specific change. It is weak evidence when it becomes the goal.

For example, this is an illustrative scan, not an employer benchmark:

Scan resultBeforeAfter
Overall checker score6186
Must-have terms found5 of 109 of 10
Standard sections detected3 of 55 of 5
Date warnings30
Contact fields detected2 of 44 of 4
Plain-text pasteHeadings and dates mergedClean, logical order

The before version may have looked attractive. It used a two-column layout, placed the phone number in an icon row, and described a reporting tool as “dashboard work” instead of naming the tool. The after version used one reading order, standard headings, a plain contact line, and an accurate bullet such as:

Built Tableau dashboards that tracked weekly retention and reduced manual reporting time by six hours per week.

The after version is better because the content is clearer and more relevant. The number is evidence that the checker found those changes. It is not proof of an interview.

Do not add “data analysis,” “stakeholder management,” or any other phrase only because a checker requests it. Add a term when it describes work you have actually done. If the requirement is missing from your background, leave it out or describe a related, truthful skill.

Repair keyword coverage in context

Start with the job post, not a random keyword list. Separate terms into must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. Look for exact names, abbreviations, and close variants. A job post that asks for “customer relationship management” may also mention CRM. If you have that experience, use the clearest version in a relevant bullet.

Weak:

Responsible for project reporting and team support.

Stronger, when accurate:

Managed Jira project reporting for a six-person product team, tracking sprint risks and delivery dates in weekly stakeholder reviews.

The second bullet puts the tool, work, and setting together. It gives the reader evidence instead of placing isolated terms in a skills block.

Check the top third of your resume first. Your summary, skills section, and recent experience should make your fit easy to identify. Then review older roles. Do not repeat a phrase in every bullet. Repetition can make the document harder to read without adding evidence.

When the problem is clear, run the ATS resume checker. It accepts a resume PDF and a pasted job description, then reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The scan is not a Workday or Greenhouse number. If you want a tailored draft from your real profile facts, YourUnique.cv can use your resume and the job description, then provide an ATS read against that job. Review the draft for accuracy before using it.

Repair sections, dates, and contact fields

Use recognizable headings. “Career Story” may sound distinctive, but “Professional Experience” is easier to identify. Keep the heading and its content together.

Use a consistent date format across every role. Examples include:

  • Jan 2022 to Mar 2024
  • January 2022 to March 2024
  • 2022 to 2024

Do not mix “03/22,” “March 2022,” and “2022 to present” without a reason. Make current employment clear. Put dates beside the correct employer and title, not in a separate visual column that may paste out of order.

Contact details should include your name, professional email, phone number, and location. Add LinkedIn or a portfolio link when relevant. Keep them as selectable text. Avoid putting the only copy of your email or phone number inside an image, logo, decorative banner, or footer.

File type matters because the scanner reads the file, not the version in your head. Export the final document, open it, select a paragraph, and paste it into a plain-text editor. Check that:

  • The name appears first.
  • Headings remain readable.
  • Jobs appear in the intended order.
  • Dates stay with the right roles.
  • Bullets do not become random symbols.
  • Contact details remain visible.

Use a one-change repair loop

Do not change ten things and rescan once. You will not know which repair helped. Use this loop:

  1. Save a copy of the current resume.
  2. Pick one issue, such as a missing must-have term or a broken date.
  3. Make one accurate change.
  4. Export the actual PDF you will submit.
  5. Run the same job description and resume through the checker.
  6. Read the changed result, not just the score.
  7. Paste the PDF into plain text again.
  8. Keep the change only if the content remains accurate and readable.
  9. Repeat for the next meaningful issue.
  10. Stop when the text paste-back is clean and the must-have skills appear in context.

This loop prevents score chasing. A change that raises a number but damages readability is not a good repair. A change that leaves the number steady but fixes a missing contact field can still matter.

Ten-item ATS repair checklist

Use this checklist before the final scan:

  • Upload the exact PDF you intend to submit.
  • Paste the complete job description into the checker.
  • Confirm your name, email, phone, location, and relevant link are selectable text.
  • Replace unusual section names with clear headings.
  • Check that Experience, Education, and Skills appear where expected.
  • Standardize month and year formats across all roles.
  • Review the job’s must-have skills and tools.
  • Add only skills you genuinely have, with evidence in relevant bullets.
  • Check that columns, tables, icons, headers, and footers paste in a logical order.
  • Change one thing, re-scan, and stop after the text paste-back is clean.

A built-in layout can help you keep headings and spacing consistent. If you need one, review the YourUnique.cv templates, then test the exported PDF rather than trusting the preview. You can also sign up for YourUnique.cv if you want a job-specific draft based on your profile facts.

Apply today checklist

Before you click submit:

  • Use the final, text-readable PDF file.
  • Keep standard headings such as Professional Summary, Experience, Education, and Skills.
  • Confirm the required skills appear accurately and in context.
  • Review five experience bullets for clear action, work, and result details.
  • Perform the plain-text paste test.
  • Run the final file and job description through the ATS resume checker.
  • Read the document yourself after the scan. Apply only when the resume is truthful and easy to follow.

Questions

What does an ats scanner free score mean?
It is a diagnostic result from a public resume checker. It usually reflects items such as keyword coverage, sections, dates, contact fields, and file parsing. It is not the score produced by an employer’s Workday, Greenhouse, or another hiring system.
What should I fix first when my ATS score is low?
Check whether the file can be read as text, then repair missing contact fields and headings. After that, compare your resume with the job post and add accurate must-have skills in context. Do not add experience or skills you do not have.
Is PDF safe for an ATS resume?
A text-based PDF can be readable, but results depend on how the file was created and how a particular system processes it. Run a plain-text paste test and scan the actual PDF you plan to submit.
Which Free Tool can I use to test my resume?
Use the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) to upload a resume PDF and paste a job description. It reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account.
Can YourUnique.cv improve my ATS result?
[YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can create a tailored CV from your profile facts and a job description, then provide an ATS read against that job. It does not produce an employer’s ATS score, and you should review every generated claim before applying.
