# ATS Score: Free Scan Workflow Before You Hit Apply

Check your ATS score before applying. Learn how to scan, read keyword and format results, fix the resume, and confirm a clean plain-text paste.

> An ATS score is a diagnostic, not an employer cutoff. Scan your resume against the job post, fix missing context and parsing problems one change at a time, then stop when the text pastes cleanly and the must-have skills appear naturally.

The practical way to use an **ats score** is to treat it as a repair signal, not a pass or fail result. Run your resume against the exact job description, inspect the keywords and parsing details, fix one issue, and scan again. Then paste the resume into plain text. If the text is readable and the must-have skills appear in honest context, stop.

No public checker can tell you the score an employer's ATS will assign. Different tools use different rules. The job post, your facts, and the final text matter more than a vanity number.

## Start with the exact job post

Save the full job description before you scan. Include the responsibilities, requirements, preferred qualifications, tools, certifications, and education details. A checker cannot measure keyword coverage against information it does not receive.

Mark each requirement as one of these:

- Must have: a stated requirement such as Python, payroll processing, or a security clearance.
- Strong match: experience you can prove with a result or work example.
- Context term: a phrase that helps explain the work, such as sprint planning or vendor management.
- Do not claim: a skill, degree, certification, or tool you have not used.

A keyword should fit the work. Adding a skills list full of terms that never appear in your experience can make the resume harder for a recruiter to trust. ## Run a free or low-cost scan

Use a checker that lets you compare the resume with a specific job post. Upload the resume in the file type you plan to submit. Paste the job description into the comparison field. If the tool accepts a job link, check that it imported the complete text.

Record these details before changing anything:

1. The reported score.
2. Missing or weak keywords.
3. Missing sections.
4. Contact-field warnings.
5. Date or formatting warnings.
6. The file type tested.
7. Any text that appears in the wrong order.

A public checker is useful for finding likely problems in your copy. It cannot prove that the employer uses the same parser, rules, or score. Treat the result as a controlled comparison between your resume and this job post.

You can paste the job into [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv), get a draft from your real profile, then still do the plain-text paste test. The tool uses profile facts and provides an ATS read against the job description. That read is not the employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other system score.

## What typical checkers measure

The exact categories differ, but most resume checkers inspect some version of these items.

| Area | What the checker may inspect | What you should verify yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Terms shared with the job post, including tools, methods, titles, and certifications | Each important term is accurate and appears in relevant context, not only in a keyword block |
| Sections | Headings such as Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, and Certifications | The section has a clear standard heading and contains the information the job requires |
| Dates | Month and year, year ranges, gaps, overlap, and consistency | Every role has readable dates in one format, such as `May 2021 to March 2024` |
| File type | PDF, DOCX, or another accepted upload format | You tested the same type you will submit and followed the employer's instructions |
| Contact fields | Name, email, phone, location, portfolio, and LinkedIn URL | Contact details are selectable text near the top, not trapped in an image or header object |
| Text order | Columns, text boxes, icons, tables, headers, and footers | The copied text reads in a sensible order from contact details through experience |

A warning does not always mean the resume will fail. For example, a checker may not understand an uncommon but valid job title. Read the text output before making a change.

## How to read the ats score

First, separate a low number into specific problems. A score can fall because the job post names a tool you omitted, because a section was not detected, or because the file produced scrambled text. These require different repairs.

Second, check whether the tool rewards repetition. A high number is not useful if it comes from listing the same term many times without evidence. A lower number may be acceptable when the checker misses a synonym that a recruiter would understand. What matters is accurate coverage of the job's important requirements.

Third, compare the result with the job post. Ask:

- Are the must-have skills present?
- Are they placed in a Summary, Skills, Experience, project, or certification section where they make sense?
- Does at least one bullet show how you used each important skill?
- Are the required degree, license, clearance, or years of experience stated when true?
- Can a reader understand your role without decoding abbreviations?

## Illustrative before and after scan

The numbers below are an example of how to read a report. They are not an employer cutoff and do not represent a universal scoring system.

| Scan | Reported score | Main finding | Repair |
|---|---:|---|---|
| Before | 58/100 | The post asks for SQL, Tableau, forecasting, and stakeholder reporting. The resume says “data tools” and has a two-column skills block. | Replace vague terms with truthful, specific skills. Move the skills into a standard section. Test the text order. |
| After | 82/100 | The terms appear in the Skills and Experience sections. Dates use one format. The text reads in order after copying. | Keep the changes. Review whether each term has evidence and whether the file follows the application instructions. |

The higher number is not the goal by itself. The repair is useful because it makes the resume more specific and easier to review. If the candidate had not used Tableau, adding it would be wrong even if the score increased.

## Fix missing sections and contact fields

Use conventional headings. `Work Experience`, `Education`, `Skills`, `Certifications`, and `Projects` are easier to identify than creative labels such as `Where I Made an Impact`.

Put your name, email address, phone number, city and state or country, LinkedIn URL, and portfolio URL in selectable text. Avoid using an image of a business card. Avoid placing essential contact details only in a header or footer. Some parsers treat those areas differently.

Do not add empty sections to satisfy a checker. If you have no certifications, leave that section out unless the job requires one you hold. If you have projects that prove a must-have skill, add a Projects section with dates, tools, and results.

## Standardize dates and file type

Pick one date style and use it everywhere. Good options include:

- `May 2022 to February 2025`
- `05/2022 to 02/2025`
- `2022 to 2025`

The first option gives the most context. Do not mix `2022 to Present`, `Jan 2021 to 06/2022`, and `2020-2021` without a reason. Check that employment dates, education dates, project dates, and certifications are readable.

Follow the application instruction for file type. If it requests DOCX, submit DOCX. If it requests PDF, submit PDF. If it says either is accepted, use the version that preserves selectable text and the cleanest order. Open the final file, select all, copy, and paste it into a plain-text editor. A PDF that looks perfect on screen can still copy poorly.

If layout is your main problem, [ATS-Friendly Resume Template: Simple Layouts That Still Parse in 2026](https://yourunique.cv/articles/ats-friendly-resume-template) explains why simple structure is safer.

## Use a one-change repair loop

Do not rewrite the whole resume after every scan. Make one controlled change, then rescan. This tells you what helped and prevents accidental keyword stuffing.

1. Save the original file with a clear name.
2. Test the original against the exact job description.
3. Fix the largest real gap, such as a missing must-have skill.
4. Add that skill to a relevant bullet or project, if your experience supports it.
5. Rescan and record the new score and warning.
6. Fix section headings, contact fields, or dates if the text is misread.
7. Rescan after the structural change.
8. Remove unsupported terms, repeated phrases, and decorative elements that damage the text order.
9. Copy the final resume into a plain-text editor and read it from top to bottom.
10. Stop when the paste is clean and the must-have skills appear in context.

Near the end of this process, you can compare your job-specific draft and layout in [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv/sign-up), then export the file format the application requests. Still inspect the exported file yourself.

## Apply-today checklist

Before you submit, complete this short final check:

- [ ] File type matches the job post or the accepted upload options.
- [ ] Standard headings identify Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, and other needed sections.
- [ ] Must-have skills appear accurately and in context.
- [ ] Contact fields are selectable text near the top.
- [ ] At least five experience bullets show relevant work, tools, or results.
- [ ] Dates use one readable format throughout.
- [ ] No required information is trapped in an image, header, footer, or decorative text box.
- [ ] The final file opens correctly and has the intended page order.
- [ ] A plain-text paste test reads cleanly from top to bottom.
- [ ] You rechecked the resume after the last meaningful change.

Submit the version that is accurate, readable, and tailored to the job. The number supports that decision. It does not make the decision for you.

## Questions

### What is a good ATS score?

There is no universal good ATS score or employer cutoff. Scores vary by checker and by job post. Use the number to find gaps, then verify that required skills appear in context and that the resume survives a plain-text paste test.

### Can a free ATS checker predict whether an employer will reject my resume?

No. A public checker can reveal possible keyword, section, date, and parsing issues. It cannot prove how an employer's ATS will process your resume or predict a hiring decision.

### What file type is best for an ATS resume?

Use the file type requested in the job post. If no type is specified, PDF is often practical when the text is selectable and the layout is simple. A DOCX file may be safer for systems or instructions that ask for Word format.

### How many times should I rescan my resume?

Rescan after meaningful changes, especially changes to keywords, sections, dates, or layout. Stop when the text paste-back is clean and the job's must-have skills appear accurately in relevant experience or project context.

### Can YourUnique.cv check a resume against a job description?

Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume or profile facts and a pasted job description to produce a draft and an ATS read against that job. Its score is a diagnostic, not the employer's ATS score.
