An **ATS style resume** is a plain, well-organized file that software can read and a recruiter can scan quickly. Start with one column, standard section headings, a text-based file, and keywords taken from the specific job description.

You can repair most ATS problems today. Fix the file, remove layout traps, rename sections, add a skills block, tailor 8 to 12 accurate keywords, rewrite five bullets with numbers, run a plain-text paste test, and apply.

## What an ATS style resume must do

An applicant tracking system usually extracts text and fields from your file before a recruiter reviews it. The exact process varies by employer and platform. No public checker can prove how a particular employer's system will score your resume.

Your resume still has two readers:

1. Software must find the words in the correct order.
2. A recruiter must understand your background in a short scan.

A design that looks impressive but breaks the reading order can fail the first reader. A file packed with keywords but weak evidence can fail the second.

For a broader explanation of parsing and recruiter review, read [ATS Resume: Parsing, Keywords, and Recruiter View](https://yourunique.cv/articles/ats-resume). If your concern is the scan itself, [ATS Resume Scanning: Parsing, Keywords, and Recruiter View](https://yourunique.cv/articles/ats-resume-scanning) covers the same problem from the file-processing angle.

## Repair sequence: fix your resume today

### 1. Check the application instructions

Read the employer's instructions before editing the file. If the posting requests DOCX, submit DOCX. If it accepts PDF, use a text-based PDF. Do not upload a scanned image of your resume unless the employer asks for one.

A text-based PDF lets you select and copy the words. If you cannot select the text, the file may be an image. Re-export it from your document editor instead of relying on optical character recognition.

Use a clear filename:

`FirstName_LastName_TargetRole_Resume.pdf`

Do not use `resume-final-final2.pdf`. A clear filename helps you track versions and looks orderly when downloaded.

### 2. Remove parsing traps

Set the resume to one column. Keep the main content in the document body. Remove or rebuild these elements:

| Problem element | What can go wrong | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| Two or three columns | Text may be read across the wrong order | Use one column |
| Tables | Cells may be extracted out of sequence | Convert each row into normal text |
| Text boxes | Content may be missed or placed separately | Move text into the document body |
| Icons and logos | Contact details may disappear | Write the information as text |
| Headers and footers | Dates or page details may not be captured | Put important content in the body |
| Charts and skill bars | Proficiency may not become usable text | Write skills and evidence plainly |
| Decorative lines and graphics | They add noise without useful content | Delete them |

Use a readable font, normal spacing, and consistent dates. The goal is not to make the page empty. The goal is to make every important word selectable and ordered.

### 3. Rename headings to familiar labels

Use headings that describe the section directly. Software and recruiters both benefit from predictable labels.

Use:

- Summary
- Skills
- Professional Experience
- Education
- Certifications
- Projects

Avoid labels such as `What I Bring`, `My Story`, or `Career Highlights` when they replace a standard section name. Creative headings may look distinctive, but they give the reader less information and may be classified inconsistently.

Keep each job entry in a fixed pattern:

`Job Title | Employer | City, State | Month Year to Month Year`

Then place the bullets below it. Do this consistently for every role.

### 4. Add a focused skills block

Place a skills section near the top, below your summary or contact line. Include tools, methods, platforms, certifications, and role-specific capabilities that you genuinely use or can support with evidence.

Example:

`Skills: SQL, Python, Excel, Tableau, dashboard reporting, data cleaning, A/B testing, stakeholder reporting`

Do not add skills just because they appear in a posting. The keyword must be true for you. If you have limited experience with a tool, describe that accurately in a project or training section instead of presenting it as advanced expertise.

### 5. Extract 8 to 12 keywords from one job

Do not tailor the resume against five postings at once. Choose the job you plan to apply for today.

Read the description and mark:

- Repeated job functions, such as forecasting or account management
- Named tools, such as Salesforce or Jira
- Required methods, certifications, or technical terms
- Deliverables, such as dashboards, audits, or monthly reporting

Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. Pick 8 to 12 terms that are accurate and relevant. Place each term where it belongs: in the skills block, summary, experience bullet, project, or certification section.

Do not paste a keyword list at the bottom. A recruiter needs to see how you used the skill.

Run the job description through the [job description keyword extractor](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/job-description-keyword-extractor). It lists must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. With an optional resume PDF, it also marks which terms are already present. It does not tell you to claim experience you do not have.

You can then paste the same job into [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) if you want a draft based on your real profile facts. Review every line before using it. Any generated wording still needs to be true.

### 6. Rewrite five bullets with numbers

Choose five bullets that relate directly to the target job. Use this structure:

`Action + task or method + scope + measurable result`

Weak:

`Responsible for customer reports and process improvements.`

Stronger:

`Automated weekly customer reports in Excel, cutting preparation time by 6 hours per week for a 12-person service team.`

Weak:

`Managed social media campaigns.`

Stronger:

`Managed paid social campaigns across three channels, increasing qualified demo requests by 28% in one quarter.`

Use numbers for revenue, cost, time, volume, accuracy, conversion, team size, customer count, project count, or delivery speed. If exact figures are confidential, use a truthful range or scale, such as `more than 200 accounts` or `a 10-person team`.

Do not add a number simply to decorate a bullet. The number must explain the size or result of the work.

## Run the plain-text parsing test

This is a fast test you can do without assuming that a public checker matches an employer's system.

1. Open the finished PDF.
2. Select all text.
3. Copy it.
4. Paste it into a plain-text box, such as a basic text editor.
5. Read the result from top to bottom.

You should see the contact details first, followed by the summary, skills, experience, education, and other sections. Each job should keep its title, employer, dates, and bullets together.

Look for these failures:

```text
John Smith
Marketing Manager
2021 to Present
Acme Inc.
Increased leads by 31%
Skills: Google Ads, HubSpot
```

If the pasted output looks like this, the reading order is usable. Repair it if you see dates separated from employers, bullets mixed between jobs, missing skills, repeated headers, or blank sections where graphics used to be.

Copying text does not test every part of an employer's intake system. It does reveal basic problems in your own file, especially when columns, tables, or text boxes have changed the order.

For a second check, use the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). Upload the resume PDF and paste the same job description. It returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account. Treat the result as editing feedback, not as an employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other ATS number.

## Recruiter view: make the first scan easy

After parsing, a recruiter should be able to answer four questions quickly:

- What role does this person perform?
- Which tools and skills match this job?
- What results did this person produce?
- How recent and relevant is the experience?

Put the target role or professional focus in the summary. Keep the summary to two or three lines. Lead with relevant work, not a generic objective. Put the strongest matching skills near the top. Start experience bullets with clear verbs and place the result near the end.

Do not hide important evidence in a separate portfolio link. Add the project, tool, or outcome to the resume when it supports the application.

If you want a controlled layout after fixing the content, [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv/templates) offers built-in templates and can keep your existing layout. The paid flow uses profile facts, a job description, and an ATS read against that job. It does not remove the need to check the file yourself.

Once the resume is ready, open [Job Radar](https://yourunique.cv/job-radar) to find live ATS career-page roles that fit the same profile. It matches against public postings on sites such as Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable, SmartRecruiters, Rippling, and Personio.

## Final 12-point checklist

- [ ] I removed tables, text boxes, graphics, icons, and important headers or footers.
- [ ] I used standard headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, and Education.
- [ ] My contact details appear as normal text.
- [ ] My skills block includes accurate tools and capabilities.
- [ ] I tailored 8 to 12 accurate keywords from this specific job.
- [ ] I rewrote five relevant bullets with truthful numbers.

Run the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker), complete the plain-text paste test, then apply with the version tailored to that one job.

## Questions

### What is an ATS style resume?

An ATS style resume is a simple, readable resume built so applicant tracking software can extract its text, headings, dates, skills, and job history accurately before a recruiter reviews it.

### Should an ATS style resume use columns or tables?

No. Use a single column and avoid tables, text boxes, sidebars, graphics, headers, and footers for the main resume content. These elements can interrupt the reading order during parsing.

### What file type is best for an ATS resume?

Use a text-based PDF when the application instructions allow it. Use a DOCX file when the employer specifically requests it or when the application form gives unclear PDF guidance. Always follow the employer's instructions first.

### How can I test my resume before applying?

Run the file through the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) with the job description. It reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps, but it is not the same system or score used by an employer.

### Where can I find more roles after fixing my resume?

After the resume is ready, use [Job Radar](https://yourunique.cv/job-radar) to find live roles on public ATS career pages that fit your profile. It does not search LinkedIn, Indeed, Naukri, or Workday.
