The fastest way to check ATS score is to test your resume against the exact job description, inspect the missing terms and parsing gaps, and then recheck after each small repair. Do not chase a high number by stuffing keywords. Stop when the resume pastes as readable text and the job's must-have skills appear naturally in relevant sections.

A checker can help you find problems before you submit. It cannot reproduce every employer's system or predict a hiring decision.

## What an ATS score can and cannot tell you

Applicant tracking systems vary. Employers may configure fields, screening questions, ranking rules, and workflows differently. A public checker is a useful test of your file and its match to a job post. It is not the same system an employer runs, and its score is not an employer's Workday or Greenhouse number.

Use the score as a repair signal. Ask four questions:

- Does the resume contain the important skills from this job post?
- Are those skills supported by work, project, or education context?
- Can software read the headings, dates, contact details, and bullet text?
- Is the file type acceptable for the employer's instructions?

A high score does not make an unqualified applicant qualified. A lower score can point to a missing term, unclear date, or broken layout that is worth fixing.

## How to check ATS score step by step

### 1. Start with the exact job description

Copy the complete job description into your checker. Include the title, responsibilities, requirements, tools, certifications, and education details. Do not use a generic job description if you are applying to a specific opening.

If the post is long, check that the copied text includes the must-have requirements. A checker cannot compare your resume with text you did not provide.

### 2. Upload the version you will submit

Use the actual PDF or document you plan to send. A scan of an older draft will not tell you whether the final file works. Confirm that the filename is professional, such as `Jordan-Lee-Product-Analyst.pdf`.

Follow the employer's file instructions first. If the post requests DOCX, submit DOCX. If it accepts PDF, use a text-based PDF rather than an image-only scan.

### 3. Record the starting result

Write down the score, missing keywords, missing sections, and any file or parsing warning. Do not change five things at once. You need to know which repair made a difference.

Here is an illustrative sample. The numbers are examples, not universal targets or employer cutoffs.

| Check | Before repair | After repair | What changed |
|---|---:|---:|---|
| Overall match signal | 58 | 78 | Relevant terms were added where supported by experience |
| Must-have skill coverage | 4 of 8 | 7 of 8 | SQL, dashboards, and experimentation were stated in context |
| Section detection | 4 of 6 | 6 of 6 | Standard headings replaced decorative labels |
| Date recognition | 3 of 5 roles | 5 of 5 roles | Dates changed to consistent month and year format |
| Contact fields | Partial | Complete | Email and phone moved into readable body text |
| Text paste test | Broken order | Clean order | Side column content moved into one column |

The after result is better because the file is clearer and more relevant. It is not proof that an employer's system will produce the same number.

## Read the result by signal, not by vanity number

A score is useful only when you can connect it to a repair. Treat a large number with caution if the resume has vague bullets, unsupported keywords, or missing employment details.

| What checkers typically measure | What to inspect | Practical repair |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Skills, tools, certifications, and role terms from the job post | Add truthful terms in a skills line or a relevant bullet |
| Sections | Contact, summary, experience, education, and skills headings | Use familiar headings and keep each section clearly labeled |
| Dates | Month and year, year ranges, current role labels | Use one format throughout, such as `May 2021 to Present` |
| Contact fields | Name, email, phone, location, and links | Put them in selectable text, not an image or decorative header |
| File type | PDF or DOCX requirements and text accessibility | Follow the job post and open the exported file before uploading |
| Text order | Whether columns, tables, and sidebars read in a logical sequence | Use one main column when the layout causes scrambled text |

Keywords need context. If the job asks for stakeholder management, a skills list can help, but a bullet is stronger when it explains what you did: `Managed stakeholder reviews for a reporting redesign used by four teams.` Use the exact job wording only when it accurately describes your work.

Do not add a tool because a checker lists it as missing. If you have not used Salesforce, Python, or a required certification, leave it out. You can address a real gap in a cover letter or interview, but your resume must remain factual.

## Check sections, dates, contact fields, and file type

### Use standard section names

Label work history as `Experience` or `Professional Experience`. Label training as `Education`, `Certifications`, or `Professional Development`. A creative heading such as `My Path` may look clear to a person but give a parser less information.

Keep the most important content in the main document body. Headers, footers, text boxes, icons, and floating shapes can make contact details or dates difficult to extract.

### Make dates consistent

Pick one readable format and use it for every role. Examples include:

- `June 2022 to Present`
- `06/2022 to Present`
- `2022 to Present`

Avoid switching between `06-22`, `Summer 2022`, and `2022 to now`. Make employment gaps understandable without hiding dates. If you held two jobs at once, show the dates accurately.

### Make contact details selectable

A phone number, email address, location, and LinkedIn URL should be real text. Test them by selecting and copying them. An image of a phone icon beside a number may look fine but can fail extraction.

### Check the file after export

Open the PDF, select all text, and paste it into a plain-text editor. Read the result from top to bottom. Look for missing characters, broken bullets, repeated headers, scrambled columns, and dates separated from job titles.

The paste-back test is often more useful than a score increase. If the pasted text is confusing, repair the layout before you spend time on keyword changes.

## Run a one-change repair loop

Use this order:

1. Save a copy of the current resume.
2. Run it against the exact job description.
3. Read the missing keyword and parsing notes.
4. Pick one repair with a clear reason.
5. Make the smallest accurate change.
6. Export the file again.
7. Paste all text into a plain-text editor.
8. Re-scan the new file with the same job description.
9. Compare the new result with the old one.
10. Keep the change only if it improves clarity, relevance, or parsing.

For example, if `forecasting` is missing and you have performed forecasting, add it to a relevant bullet: `Built a monthly demand forecasting model that reduced manual planning time by 30%.` If the term is not supported by your background, do not add it.

Run the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) with your PDF and job description. It returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and not saved to an account. If you want a tailored draft from your real profile facts, you can also try [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv). Its paid product can create a CV from your resume, optional LinkedIn URL, and job description, then provide an ATS read against that job.

## Before and after: repair the evidence, not just the score

Before:

`Helped with reports and worked with teams on data.`

After:

`Built weekly SQL reports and Power BI dashboards for sales and finance stakeholders, cutting manual reporting time by six hours per week.`

The second bullet is better because it names supported tools, the work performed, the audience, and a result. It may also match more of the job description. Do not copy it unless it is true for your experience.

A weak repair would be to add a long keyword block: `SQL, Power BI, analytics, reporting, dashboards, stakeholders, forecasting, data.` A skills section has a place, but a list without evidence does not explain your level or use of each skill.

## 10-item fix checklist with the recheck step

- [ ] Copy the complete job description, including requirements and tools.
- [ ] Upload the exact resume file you plan to submit.
- [ ] Confirm the file type follows the employer's instructions.
- [ ] Use standard headings for experience, education, and skills.
- [ ] Put contact details in selectable text.
- [ ] Make job titles, employers, and dates easy to associate.
- [ ] Use one date format across the resume.
- [ ] Add only truthful must-have skills in relevant context.
- [ ] Paste the exported file into a plain-text editor and fix scrambled text.
- [ ] Re-scan after each meaningful change, then stop when the text paste is clean and the must-have skills are covered.

If the checker score drops after a change, inspect the file instead of automatically undoing it. A clearer resume can be preferable to a higher vanity number. Keep the version that is accurate, readable, and targeted.

For layout options, compare [YourUnique.cv templates](https://yourunique.cv/templates), but test the exported file rather than trusting the preview. You can also use [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv/sign-up) to tailor a resume from the facts in your profile and compare it with the target job.

## Apply today checklist

Before you submit, confirm:

- [ ] The file is the requested PDF or DOCX format and opens correctly.
- [ ] Headings are standard and the text has one logical reading order.
- [ ] The job's supported must-have skills appear in the skills section or relevant bullets.
- [ ] At least five bullets explain actions, tools, scope, or results where appropriate.
- [ ] The contact fields are selectable and accurate.
- [ ] The resume passes the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) review against this job description.
- [ ] The full file passes the plain-text paste test.

Then submit the clean, truthful version. Do not keep editing to chase a perfect score.

## Questions

### What does an ATS resume score measure?

An ATS resume score usually estimates how well your resume matches a job description and whether common resume fields, sections, dates, and file content can be read. It is a diagnostic signal, not an employer's actual Workday or Greenhouse score.

### What score should I get before applying?

There is no universal passing score. Use the number to find gaps, then check whether the job's must-have skills appear in truthful, relevant context and whether your resume text pastes in the correct order.

### How can I check ATS score for free?

Use the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). Upload a resume PDF and paste the job description to see a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The result is not a Workday or Greenhouse number, and the PDF is scanned for the result rather than saved to an account.

### Should I add every keyword that a checker says is missing?

No. Add a keyword only when it accurately describes your experience, tools, training, or results. A resume should not claim skills or experience you do not have.

### Can YourUnique.cv help repair a resume after I check the score?

Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume or LinkedIn URL, profile facts, and a job description to create a tailored CV, then provide an ATS read against that job. Review every draft for accuracy before applying.
