# Combination Resume: Chronological vs Combination vs Functional

Compare a combination resume with chronological and functional formats. Learn ATS-safe sections, dates, Word alignment, page length, and layout fixes.

> A combination resume works well when you need to connect proven skills to a clear work history, but a chronological resume is often simpler for ATS parsing. Use standard headings, MM/YYYY dates, plain text structure, and relevant evidence.

A combination resume puts your most relevant skills near the top while keeping a real, dated work history below. It can fit job seekers changing careers, returning after a gap, or applying to roles where their transferable skills need context. For many applicants, a chronological resume remains the safest ATS choice because its structure is easy to parse.

A functional resume usually performs worse in ATS workflows because it hides the connection between skills, employers, job titles, and dates. The format you choose matters less than clean headings, readable dates, relevant keywords, and evidence from your work.

## The three resume formats compared

| Format | Section order | ATS parsing | Best use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chronological | Summary, Skills, Work Experience, Education | Usually clear when built with standard headings | A steady history in the same field | Your career change or gap is more visible |
| Combination | Summary, Core Skills, Work Experience, Education | Usually workable if the skills section does not replace history | Transferable skills, career changes, mixed experience | The top skills can look unsupported if bullets lack proof |
| Functional | Summary, Skills grouped by theme, limited Work Experience, Education | Often weaker because dates and employers are separated from skills | Rare cases where a consultant or recruiter requests it | The reader cannot quickly verify where you used each skill |

The combination format is a middle path. It gives skills more space than a chronological resume, but it still includes employers, titles, and dates. Do not turn it into a list of abilities with no evidence.

## Recommended section order for a combination resume

Use this order unless the job posting or your field calls for something different:

1. Name and contact details
2. Professional Summary
3. Core Skills or Technical Skills
4. Work Experience
5. Education
6. Certifications, Projects, or Additional Training, when relevant

The summary should identify your target role, years or type of experience, and two or three job-relevant strengths. The skills section should use terms that are supported by your work history. Do not add a skill just because it appears in the job description if you cannot support it.

Your Work Experience section must remain detailed. Include the employer, location if useful, job title, dates, and relevant accomplishments. A combination resume is not permission to remove your employment timeline.

Use headings that a parser and human reader expect:

- Professional Summary
- Core Skills
- Technical Skills
- Work Experience
- Education
- Certifications
- Projects

Avoid creative replacements such as “Where I’ve Been,” “What I Bring,” or “My Toolkit.” They may look distinctive, but they make the section purpose less obvious. Use “Work Experience,” not “Where I’ve Been.” Use “Skills,” not “My Toolkit.”

If you are unsure whether a design will parse correctly, compare it with this guide to an [ATS compliant resume](https://yourunique.cv/articles/ats-compliant-resume).

## Write dates as MM/YYYY

Use the same date format everywhere. A clear pattern is:

`04/2021 to 09/2024`

For a current job, use:

`09/2024 to Present`

Avoid mixing formats such as “April 2021,” “04-21,” and “Spring 2021.” Avoid listing only years when the exact months are available. Consistent MM/YYYY dates help the reader understand the length and order of each role.

Place dates on the same line as the job title or employer. Keep the date range close to the role it describes. Do not put all dates in a separate column that can become detached during parsing.

### Right-align dates in Word without a table

Use a right-aligned tab stop. This keeps the layout stable and avoids a table that may be read in the wrong order.

1. Select the lines containing your job titles and dates.
2. Open the Paragraph dialog. In Word, you can use the small arrow in the Paragraph section of the Home tab.
3. Select Tabs.
4. Set a tab stop near the right margin, such as 6.5 inches on a standard US letter page with one-inch margins. Adjust it to your page width.
5. Choose Alignment: Right.
6. Select Set, then OK.
7. Put your cursor between the role text and the date.
8. Press Tab once. Type the date range.

The result should look like this:

`Marketing Analyst, Northstar Co. 04/2021 to 09/2024`

The wide gap above represents a Word tab, not a row of spaces. Do not press the space bar repeatedly to push dates to the edge. Spaces can shift when the font, margins, or PDF export changes. Do not use a table for this alignment if you want a simpler text reading order.

## How long should the resume be?

Use one page when you can present the required evidence clearly without shrinking the type or cutting useful details. Use two pages when you have enough relevant experience to justify the second page. Do not force ten years of relevant work into a tiny one-page file.

For a one-page combination resume, keep the skills section tight. Use a compact list or grouped lines. Give more space to recent roles and achievements. Older or unrelated roles can have fewer bullets, but they should still show the employer, title, and dates.

For two pages, repeat your name and contact details in the header or footer if your Word setup supports it cleanly. Keep the Work Experience heading with the first role it introduces. Avoid a page that contains only a large skills block and no work history.

Your page count does not make a file ATS-friendly by itself. A two-page document with clear text is better than a crowded one-page document with tiny type, narrow margins, or missing evidence.

## Build evidence into the skills-first section

The top half of a combination resume should identify your fit. The Work Experience section should prove it.

Weak skill block:

`Project management | Stakeholder communication | Data analysis | Process improvement`

This lists claims but gives no context. A stronger combination resume keeps the skills list and connects each important skill to a bullet:

`Core Skills: Project management, stakeholder communication, data analysis, process improvement`

`- Managed a cross-functional reporting project from requirements through launch, coordinating five stakeholders and reducing monthly preparation time by 20%.`

`- Analyzed customer support trends in Excel and presented findings that helped the team remove two recurring process delays.`

The numbers must be true and explain what changed. If you do not have a percentage, describe the output, scope, volume, audience, or time saved without inventing a result.

Aim for about five relevant bullets in a recent role when the experience supports them. Edit each bullet against the job description. A bullet should usually state an action, the work performed, and an outcome or useful scope.

## Do this, not this: layout gallery

Think of the page as a text document first and a design second.

### Do this

- Use one column with conventional reading order.
- Put your name and contact details at the top.
- Use standard headings such as Professional Summary, Skills, Work Experience, and Education.
- Use simple bullets, readable fonts, and consistent spacing.
- Keep job titles, employers, and MM/YYYY dates on predictable lines.
- Export to PDF only after checking the text order.

### Not this

- Do not place contact details in a graphic, sidebar, or floating text box.
- Do not use icons as the only labels for email, phone, or location.
- Do not put skills in a right-hand column while the work history sits in a left-hand column.
- Do not use a large visual timeline instead of dated work entries.
- Do not replace headings with slogans or creative category names.
- Do not use repeated spaces, text boxes, or decorative charts to position content.

A plain-text paste test catches many layout failures. Open the final PDF, select all, copy, and paste it into a plain-text editor. Check that your name comes first, headings appear in order, dates stay with the right roles, and bullets have not merged. Also search for broken characters, missing symbols, and empty sections.

Run the finished file through the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker), then paste the same job into [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) if you want a draft based on your real profile facts. The checker reports a scan result, missing keywords, and gaps. It does not reproduce an employer's ATS result. Read its feedback and edit the document yourself.

## When to choose each format

Choose chronological when your recent experience matches the target role and your timeline is easy to explain. It is the lowest-complexity option for most applicants.

Choose combination when your relevant strengths come from several roles, a previous field, freelance work, projects, or training. Keep enough history to show where you gained those strengths.

Use functional only with care. It may suit a specific request from a recruiter, some portfolio-led work, or a situation where the format is expected. For applications submitted through a company site or LinkedIn Easy Apply, a functional design can leave the parser with too little usable context. A chronological or combination format is usually easier to verify.

A tool can help with review, but it cannot decide whether an accomplishment is accurate or whether a hiring manager will value it. If you want to rebuild the document from your existing profile, [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv/sign-up) lets you upload a resume, keep its layout or choose a built-in template, add a job description, and export a PDF after review. The paid product writes from profile facts only. You still need to check dates, claims, keywords, and the final text order.

## Apply today checklist

- [ ] Save the final file as a clean PDF with a simple filename, such as Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf.
- [ ] Use standard headings, including Professional Summary, Skills, Work Experience, and Education.
- [ ] Add job-relevant skills that you actually have and support them in your bullets.
- [ ] Check that recent relevant roles contain about five strong bullets when the evidence supports them.
- [ ] Write every employment date as MM/YYYY to MM/YYYY or MM/YYYY to Present.
- [ ] Paste the PDF into a plain-text editor and confirm the reading order.
- [ ] Run the file through the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) with the exact job description.
- [ ] Fix missing context, awkward dates, and unsupported claims before you apply.

## Questions

### Is a combination resume better than a chronological resume?

A combination resume can be better when your skills match the target role but your work history includes career changes, short gaps, or a shift in direction. A chronological resume is usually simpler when your recent roles already support the job.

### Why do functional resumes often perform poorly with ATS software?

Functional resumes often group skills without placing them beside employers, job titles, and dates. That makes it harder for an ATS and a recruiter to connect each skill to a specific role and period.

### What date format should I use on a resume?

Use MM/YYYY for both the start and end of each role, such as 04/2021 to 09/2024. Use Present for a current role, such as 09/2024 to Present.

### Can I check whether my combination resume matches a job description?

Yes. Upload your PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) for a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The result is a scan of your file, not the number produced by an employer's Workday or Greenhouse system.

### Can [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) create a combination resume?

Yes. You can upload a resume, keep its layout or choose a built-in template, add a job description, and get a CV written from your profile facts. Review every statement before exporting the PDF.
