Controller resume samples work best when they make your accounting scope easy to verify. Hiring managers and screening software look for the language of the role, including GAAP, month-end close, forecasting, audit, ERP, internal controls, financial reporting, and team leadership.

Put those terms in a clear skills block. Then use your experience bullets to prove where you used them and what changed. A controller resume should answer four questions quickly: What did you own? Which systems did you use? How large was the operation? What measurable result did you produce?

Build your controller keyword set

Start with the target job description. Pull out repeated requirements, named systems, reporting duties, and leadership expectations. Do not add a skill you do not have. Use this list as a starting point, not as a substitute for the actual posting.

Keyword groupTerms to look for in controller job descriptions
Accounting standardsGAAP, financial reporting, revenue recognition, accruals, consolidations
Close and reportingmonth-end close, quarter-end close, reconciliations, variance analysis, financial statements
Planningforecasting, budgeting, cash flow, annual operating plan, scenario modeling
Risk and assuranceaudit, internal controls, SOX, compliance, control testing, audit findings
SystemsERP, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, Excel, Power BI
Leadershipteam management, cross-functional communication, executive reporting, process improvement

The target keyword set should appear in two forms. First, use direct terms in the skills section for scanning. Second, place the same concepts inside achievement bullets. A skills block that says “GAAP” is useful. A bullet that says “Led GAAP close procedures across five entities and reduced the close from 12 days to 8” gives the term evidence.

Sample controller resume header and summary

Keep the header simple. Use one name, one location, one phone number, one email address, and one professional profile link if relevant.

Summary
Controller with 11 years of experience leading GAAP reporting, month-end close, forecasting, audit support, and internal controls for multi-entity businesses.
Managed accounting teams of up to 9 and reporting for organizations with revenue up to $180M.
Known for shortening close cycles, improving ERP processes, and giving executives clear variance and cash-flow analysis.

Adjust every line to your own facts. Do not copy sample metrics that you cannot support.

Skills block: split hard and soft skills

A divided skills section helps readers find technical requirements without burying leadership terms. Keep it compact. Avoid long paragraphs of keywords.

Hard skills: GAAP, month-end close, quarter-end close, financial reporting, account reconciliations, forecasting, budgeting, cash-flow management, variance analysis, audit coordination, internal controls, SOX compliance, revenue recognition, consolidations, ERP implementation, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, advanced Excel, Power BI

Soft skills: Team leadership, cross-functional communication, executive reporting, staff development, process improvement, risk judgment, deadline management, business partnering, change management

Only list software you have used. If a job asks for NetSuite and you have used SAP, you can mention SAP and state your ERP implementation or migration experience. Do not claim NetSuite experience you do not have.

Full controller resume experience sample

The following is a model section. The employers, dates, and figures are illustrative. Replace them with your real scope, tools, and results.

Controller | Northstar Software, Austin, TX | 2020 to Present

  • Lead GAAP accounting, month-end close, forecasting, and financial reporting for a $180M software business across four legal entities.
  • Reduced the close cycle from 12 days to 8 by redesigning reconciliations, assigning ownership, and adding close calendar controls in NetSuite.
  • Managed a team of 9 accountants and delivered monthly variance reporting to the CFO and operating leaders.
  • Coordinated annual audit requests and strengthened internal controls, reducing repeat audit findings from 7 to 2 in one cycle.

Assistant Controller | Meridian Health Services, Austin, TX | 2016 to 2020

  • Managed quarter-end reporting, account reconciliations, revenue recognition, and consolidation schedules for a $95M multi-site organization.
  • Improved forecast accuracy by replacing spreadsheet-only inputs with a documented driver-based process in Oracle and Excel.
  • Supervised 5 accounting staff, created review checklists, and raised on-time reconciliation completion from 82% to 97%.
  • Prepared audit schedules and control evidence for external auditors, resolving open requests before the reporting deadline.

Senior Accountant | Cedar Ridge Retail Group, Round Rock, TX | 2012 to 2016

  • Prepared GAAP journal entries, bank reconciliations, fixed-asset schedules, and monthly financial statements for 24 retail locations.
  • Cut reconciliation review time by 30% by standardizing templates and documenting exception handling in the ERP workflow.
  • Supported annual budgets, store-level forecasting, and monthly sales and expense variance analysis for regional leaders.
  • Trained 3 new accountants on close procedures, documentation standards, and audit support requirements.

Notice the pattern. Each job includes ownership, a tool or process, scale, and an outcome. The bullets do not repeat “responsible for.” They explain the work in a form a hiring manager can scan.

If your background is in another accounting environment, change the business context. A technology controller may emphasize recurring revenue, deferred revenue, SaaS metrics, system integrations, and multi-entity consolidation. A retail controller may emphasize store operations, inventory, sales tax, shrink, and location reporting. See the same evidence pattern in this guide to assembly resume, where tools and production metrics also need to connect to outcomes.

Metrics that belong on a controller resume

Use numbers that define accounting scope or business impact. Good controller resume samples commonly include:

  • Close cycle: “Reduced month-end close from 10 days to 7.”
  • Audit findings: “Cleared 14 open findings and reduced repeat findings to 3.”
  • Team size: “Led a team of 8 accountants across general ledger and reporting.”
  • Revenue: “Owned reporting for a $120M business.”
  • Entity count: “Managed consolidation for 6 legal entities.”
  • Process result: “Raised on-time reconciliations from 84% to 98%.”

If you do not know an exact number, use a defensible range only when your employer permits it. You can also describe scope without inventing a result: “Prepared monthly reporting for 12 locations.” Accuracy matters more than an impressive figure.

Common controller resume mistakes

Writing a duty list

“Responsible for monthly close, budgets, audits, and reporting” tells the reader what the job contained. It does not show your level of ownership. Add scale, systems, speed, risk, or results.

Listing tools without context

A row of ERP names is weak if your experience never explains how you used them. Connect the tool to a migration, close process, reporting workflow, reconciliation, control, or forecast.

Leaving retail language on a technology resume

Terms such as store count, shrink, point-of-sale reporting, and inventory variance can be valid, but they may distract from a technology controller role. Translate related experience accurately into revenue reporting, multi-entity close, controls, systems, and forecasting where those concepts apply.

Using technology language on a retail resume

Do the reverse when needed. A retail employer may care more about location reporting, inventory, sales tax, store-level budgets, margin, and cash controls than SaaS metrics. Match the language to the role without changing the facts.

Hiding leadership in the summary

If you managed people, state the team size. If you partnered with a CFO, audit firm, or operating leaders, include that relationship in a bullet.

Making the file hard to parse

Avoid text inside images, decorative columns, tiny fonts, and unusual section titles. Use standard headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, and Certifications. A clean PDF is usually a practical choice, but verify that the text can be selected and copied.

Run the file through the ATS resume checker, then paste the same job into YourUnique.cv if you want a draft based on your real profile. The checker scans your PDF against the job description and reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. It does not reproduce the employer's screening system.

One-page controller resume outline

Use this order when your experience fits on one page:

  1. Header with name, title, location, phone, email, and profile link.
  2. Three-line summary with years of experience, accounting scope, and strongest results.
  3. Hard skills and soft skills in separate compact lines.
  4. Experience with the most relevant role first and three to five bullets per job.
  5. Education, certifications, and selected systems if they are relevant.

For a longer career, a second page is acceptable when every section adds evidence. Remove old or unrelated detail before shrinking the font. Keep the first half of page one focused on the target controller role.

You can also use YourUnique.cv to keep your existing layout or select a built-in resume template, then compare the finished CV with the target job. Keep the final review manual. Confirm every keyword, metric, date, and tool.

After the resume is ready, open Job Radar to find live ATS career-page roles that fit the same profile. Its board focuses on public postings from company career pages and similar ATS sources.

Questions

What keywords should appear on a controller resume?
Use accurate terms from the target job description, such as GAAP, month-end close, forecasting, audit, ERP, internal controls, financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow, and consolidation.
How many bullets should each controller job have?
Use three to five bullets for relevant roles. Four strong bullets per job is a practical starting point. Prioritize measurable results, scope, systems, and controls over routine duty lists.
Should a controller resume include soft skills?
Yes, but keep the soft skills specific and support them with evidence. Use terms such as cross-functional communication, team leadership, executive reporting, and process improvement, then prove them through results in the experience section.
Can I check whether my controller resume matches a job description?
Yes. Upload your resume PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) for a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The result is not an employer's Workday or Greenhouse score.
Where can I find controller jobs after finishing my resume?
