A free ATS resume checker gives you a quick pre-application audit. Use it to compare your resume with the job post, find missing terms, and spot parsing problems. Do not treat its score as an employer decision. Repair the file, run it again, and confirm that the important skills appear in honest context.

The best workflow is simple: scan, read the evidence behind the number, change one thing, re-scan, and run a plain-text paste test before you submit.

## What an ATS checker can and cannot tell you

A checker is useful for finding patterns that a person may miss during a fast review. It can compare words in your resume with words in a job description. It can also identify missing sections, unusual dates, weak contact fields, or a file that may be difficult to read as text.

It cannot reproduce every employer's hiring system. Employers use different software, settings, workflows, and human review. A public checker is not the same system as Workday, Greenhouse, or another employer platform. A score is a guide for repairs, not a pass or fail result.

For more context on the number, read [ATS Resume Checker: What the Number Means and What to Change](https://yourunique.cv/articles/ats-resume-checker). The key habit is to inspect the findings behind the score.

## Start with the job post, not the score

Copy the complete job description into your checker. Include the requirements, responsibilities, tools, certifications, and education language. A short excerpt can hide the terms that matter most.

Mark each phrase as one of these:

- Must-have skill or qualification.
- Tool, platform, method, or industry term.
- Responsibility that should appear in an experience bullet.
- Nice-to-have item.

Then compare the list with your resume. Do not add skills you do not have. If a job requires SQL and you have used SQL for reporting, say that clearly. If you have never used SQL, do not insert it as a keyword.

The [job description keyword extractor](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/job-description-keyword-extractor) can list must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves from a pasted job description. Add your resume PDF if you want to see which terms already appear in the file. It helps organize the language. It does not decide whether you are qualified.

## What typical checkers measure

Use this table as a reading guide. Different tools label their checks differently, and none of these checks proves that an employer's system will behave the same way.

| Area | What the checker may inspect | What you should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Exact or related terms shared by the resume and job post | Must-have skills appear where you actually used them |
| Sections | Headings such as Experience, Education, Skills, and Certifications | Sections are clearly named and contain the right information |
| Dates | Month and year patterns, ordering, and consistency | Every role has readable dates, such as Jan 2022 to Mar 2024 |
| Contact fields | Name, email, phone, location, and links | Contact details are selectable text, not an image or header artifact |
| File type | Whether the uploaded document can be opened and scanned | Follow the employer's requested format and use a text-readable PDF when allowed |
| Text order | The order extracted from columns, tables, headers, or footers | The pasted text reads from top to bottom without scrambled lines |

## Run the scan in five steps

### 1. Save a clean copy

Keep your original resume unchanged. Save a job-specific copy with a plain filename such as `Sam-Lee-Marketing-Manager.pdf`. Avoid decorative symbols in the filename.

### 2. Upload the file and paste the job description

Use a checker that accepts the file type you plan to submit. The [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) accepts a resume PDF and a pasted job description. It reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account.

### 3. Record the findings

Write down the score, missing must-have terms, section warnings, and any file or parsing notes. Separate a missing keyword from a missing qualification. A word can be absent even when your experience is relevant. A warning can also be caused by a layout problem rather than a lack of experience.

### 4. Inspect the extracted text

Copy the parsed text into a blank document. Read it from the first line to the last. Look for a missing name, broken phone number, reversed dates, headings attached to the wrong section, or bullets that have lost their meaning.

### 5. Make one repair and scan again

Change one thing at a time. If you add five skills, replace a heading, and change the PDF layout at once, you will not know which repair helped or caused a new problem.

Run the file through the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker), then paste the same job into [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) if you want a draft from your real profile. Its paid product can use your resume, optional LinkedIn URL, and job description to write a CV from profile facts only. Still perform the plain-text paste test yourself.

## Read a sample score without chasing it

The numbers below are illustrative. They are not employer cutoffs and do not predict an interview.

| Scan | Score shown | Findings | Repair |
|---|---:|---|---|
| Before | 61/100 | “Marketing automation” missing. Experience heading is “Career History.” Dates use mixed formats. Two-column layout scrambles text order. | Use a standard Experience heading, add an accurate marketing automation example, normalize dates, and rebuild the layout in one column. |
| After | 82/100 | Must-have terms appear in context. Dates are consistent. Text order is readable. “A/B testing” remains absent because the applicant has not used it. | Keep the honest version. Check the job's other requirements and complete the paste test. |

The higher number is useful because the file improved against this job description. It is not proof that the resume will receive the same number in an employer system. The remaining missing term may be acceptable if you do not have that experience. Do not force it into the document.

## Repair the four common problem areas

### Keyword coverage

Match the employer's wording where it is truthful. Put a tool or skill in a Skills section when that helps quick review. Repeat it in an experience bullet when you used it in a real setting.

Weak: “Handled reporting for the team.”

Stronger: “Built weekly sales reports in Excel using pivot tables and lookup formulas for a 12-person sales team.”

The stronger version contains a tool, a task, and a setting. Do not create a keyword list that your work history cannot support.

### Missing sections

Use familiar headings: Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, and Certifications when relevant. A creative heading such as “Where I Made an Impact” may look clear to a person but give a parser less information. Keep the design readable, but name sections plainly.

### Date formats

Use one pattern throughout. `Jan 2022 to Mar 2024` and `2022 to 2024` can both be readable, but mixing `01/22`, `January 2022`, and `2022` makes the timeline harder to interpret. Put dates near the role and employer. Do not hide them in a side column.

### Contact fields and file type

Place your name, email, phone, location, and professional link in selectable text near the top. Do not rely on a profile image, decorative text box, or image-based contact card.

Follow the application instructions for file type. If PDF is accepted, export a real text PDF and open it to confirm that you can select and copy the words. If the employer asks for DOCX, submit DOCX instead. Do not rename one file extension to pretend it is another format.

## The repair loop: when to stop

Repeat this sequence:

1. Select the most important finding.
2. Make one accurate change.
3. Export the resume again.
4. Re-scan the new file against the same job description.
5. Compare the finding, not just the score.
6. Paste the extracted text into a blank document.

Stop when the text paste-back is clean, the file opens correctly, the contact fields are intact, the main sections are recognizable, and the job's must-have skills appear in relevant context. Stop as well when the remaining missing terms describe experience you do not have. A score can rise while the resume becomes less honest or less readable. That is a bad repair.

## Ten-item fix and recheck checklist

- [ ] Save a job-specific copy with a simple filename.
- [ ] Paste the complete job description into the checker.
- [ ] Confirm the file type matches the employer's instructions.
- [ ] Check that your name, email, phone, location, and links are selectable text.
- [ ] Use clear headings for Experience, Education, Skills, and other relevant sections.
- [ ] Make all role dates consistent and easy to read.
- [ ] Replace a confusing multi-column or text-box layout if the extracted order is broken.
- [ ] Add only accurate must-have skills and tools.
- [ ] Put important skills in the context of real work, projects, or results.
- [ ] Change one item, re-scan, and run the plain-text paste test again.

If layout is the main issue, compare a few readable [resume templates](https://yourunique.cv/templates). A template can give you a clean starting structure, but you still need to test the exported file.

## Apply today checklist

Before you hit submit, confirm:

- [ ] You used the file type requested by the employer.
- [ ] Your headings are plain and recognizable.
- [ ] Your relevant skills appear in honest context.
- [ ] At least five strong bullets explain work, action, and result where possible.
- [ ] Your contact fields are selectable and complete.
- [ ] The plain-text paste test reads in the correct order.
- [ ] You ran the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) against the final PDF and reviewed the findings.

Then apply. The goal is not a perfect public score. The goal is a truthful resume that opens, parses, matches the job's real requirements, and makes sense when a person reads it.

## Questions

### What does a free ATS resume checker measure?

A free ATS resume checker can compare resume wording with a job description and flag missing keywords, sections, date patterns, contact fields, or file issues. It cannot prove how a specific employer system will score your application.

### What is a good ATS score?

There is no universal employer score cutoff. Treat a checker score as a diagnostic signal. Read the missing keywords, section warnings, and parsing output instead of chasing a number.

### Should I add every keyword a checker says is missing?

No. Add a keyword only when it accurately describes your experience, tools, education, or work. Put relevant skills in the context of a real project, task, or result.

### Which Free Tools can I use before applying?

Use the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) to upload a resume PDF and paste the job description. It returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The result is not a Workday or Greenhouse score.

### Can YourUnique.cv help rewrite a resume for a job?

Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your uploaded resume or optional LinkedIn URL, profile facts, and a job description to create a tailored CV. You can keep your layout or choose a built-in template, then export a PDF.
