# Grade My Resume: Score, Recheck, Repeat Until the Text Pastes Clean

Grade my resume with a checker, read the score without chasing vanity numbers, and fix keywords, sections, dates, file type, and paste errors before applying.

> To grade your resume, run the PDF and job description through a checker, repair missing keywords and formatting issues one change at a time, then stop when the text pastes cleanly and must-have skills appear in context.

Start with the practical answer: to grade my resume before applying, run the resume PDF and the target job description through a checker. Use the result to find missing job terms, broken sections, date problems, contact field errors, and file issues. Then fix one item, re-scan, and repeat.

Do not chase a large score by stuffing keywords. Stop when the important skills appear in truthful context and the resume text pastes back in the right order.

## What a resume grade can and cannot tell you

A checker gives you a second set of eyes. It may compare your resume with the job description, inspect headings, extract dates, and test whether text can be read from the file. That makes it useful for repair work.

It cannot predict an interview. It cannot prove that an employer's system will assign the same result. It also cannot confirm whether your claims are accurate or whether a hiring manager will find the evidence convincing.

Treat the number as a signal. Treat the warnings as a work order.

For more detail on this process, see the guides on [resume scanning](https://yourunique.cv/articles/resume-scanner), [resume scores](https://yourunique.cv/articles/resume-score), and [ATS checkers](https://yourunique.cv/articles/ats-checker).

## What typical checkers measure

| Area | What the checker may inspect | What you should do with the result |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Terms shared with the job description, including tools, methods, certifications, and role names | Confirm the term is relevant and truthful. Add it where your experience supports it. |
| Sections | Contact details, summary, experience, education, skills, certifications, and projects | Use clear headings. Move important information out of graphics, headers, or footers. |
| Dates | Month and year patterns, inconsistent formats, missing dates, and unexplained gaps | Use one format throughout, such as `Jan 2022 to Mar 2024`. Keep dates readable as text. |
| Contact fields | Name, email, phone, location, LinkedIn URL, and other basic identifiers | Put the essentials in the main document text near the top. Check every link and number. |
| File type | Whether the uploaded file is a readable PDF or another accepted format | Follow the job post's instructions. Open the exported file and copy its text before submitting. |
| Text order | Whether columns, tables, icons, and sidebars extract in a sensible sequence | Prefer simple layout elements. Remove design features that scramble reading order. |

A checker may measure other details. Read its method and warnings. Do not assume that a score from one tool transfers to another tool or to an employer's application system.

## Run the check in the right order

### 1. Get the exact job description

Use the full posting, not a shortened summary. Include the requirements, responsibilities, tools, certifications, and preferred qualifications. The target is the job you are applying for today.

### 2. Check the file, then the match

Upload the resume PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). It returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account. Its number is a diagnostic, not a Workday or Greenhouse number.

You can also use the [job description keyword extractor](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/job-description-keyword-extractor) to separate must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. Add an optional resume PDF to see which terms already appear in the file. Do not add skills you do not have.

If you want a broader fit review, the [resume vs job match tool](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/resume-job-match) reports overlapping skills and gaps. It cannot turn a missing experience into a claim you should make.

Run the file through the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker), then paste the same job into [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) if you want a draft based on your real profile facts. Still perform the plain-text test yourself.

## How to read the score

Separate the result into three questions:

1. Can the file be read?
2. Does the resume contain the job's main requirements?
3. Does each requirement appear with evidence?

The first question is technical. The second is a keyword check. The third requires human judgment.

A resume can receive a high match number because it repeats broad terms such as "communication" or "management." It may still fail to explain what you managed, which tools you used, or what changed as a result.

A lower number can also be misleading. You may use a legitimate variation that the checker does not recognize. For example, a posting may say "customer relationship management" while your resume says "CRM." Review the job language and use the clearest accurate version where appropriate.

Never insert a term into a skills list without evidence. If you used Salesforce to manage a pipeline, write that in a relevant bullet. If you have never used Salesforce, leave it out.

## Scored sample: before and after

These scores are an example of a repair process. They are not employer cutoffs.

| Version | Score from the same checker | Main findings |
|---|---:|---|
| Before | 58/100 | Two-column PDF, missing phone field, inconsistent dates, and no mention of SQL or dashboard reporting |
| After | 82/100 | Single reading order, complete contact line, consistent dates, and truthful evidence for SQL and dashboard reporting |

The before version used this bullet:

> Managed reports and worked with teams to improve business results.

The revised version was:

> Built SQL queries and weekly dashboards for 4 sales teams, reducing manual reporting time by 6 hours per week.

The revision works because it adds specific tools, a deliverable, scope, and an outcome. It should be used only if the facts are true. The score increased because the resume addressed the posting's language and made the experience easier to understand. The number alone does not prove that the second version will pass an employer's process.

## Repair the common weak points

### Keywords versus keyword stuffing

Start with must-have qualifications. Match the job's wording when it accurately describes your background. Place important terms in context, usually within experience, project, certification, or summary content.

Avoid a hidden block of repeated words. It can make the document harder to read and does not supply evidence.

### Missing sections

Check for standard headings such as Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications, and Projects. Use the sections that fit your history. Do not add an empty section just to satisfy a checker.

Keep headings as normal text. A heading inside an image may be invisible to text extraction.

### Date formats

Pick one pattern and use it everywhere. Examples include:

- `Jan 2021 to May 2023`
- `January 2021 to May 2023`
- `2021 to 2023` for education or other entries where months are not needed

Do not switch between `01/21`, `Jan 2021`, and `2021` without a reason. Make current roles clear with `Present` if appropriate.

### Contact fields

Place your name, email address, phone number, city and state or country, and relevant LinkedIn URL in the main text near the top. Do not depend on an icon to explain a phone or email field. Copy the email and URL to test them.

### File type and text order

Follow the employer's stated file instructions. If no format is specified, use a readable PDF exported from your document editor. Open the PDF. Select all text. Paste it into a plain text editor.

The pasted result should keep this general order: name, contact details, summary, skills, experience, education, and other sections. If the right column appears before the left column, or dates detach from roles, simplify the layout.

A public checker can reveal common parsing problems. It cannot certify what a particular employer's system will do.

## The one-change repair loop

Use this sequence instead of rewriting the entire resume after every result:

1. Save the current file as a versioned copy.
2. Identify the largest practical issue.
3. Change one thing, such as one heading, date format, or evidence-based keyword.
4. Export a new PDF.
5. Paste the PDF text into a plain text editor.
6. Re-scan the new PDF with the same checker and job description.
7. Compare the warning, score, keyword list, and text order.
8. Keep the change only if it improves accuracy or readability.
9. Repeat for the next issue.
10. Stop when the text pastes cleanly and the job's must-have skills appear in context.

The stop condition matters. There is no benefit in making endless changes to a readable, truthful resume because a public number moved by a few points.

## Ten-item fix checklist

- [ ] Use the exact target job description.
- [ ] Upload the final PDF, not an older draft.
- [ ] Confirm your name and contact details appear as selectable text.
- [ ] Use clear section headings.
- [ ] Check that experience, education, and certification dates use one format.
- [ ] Compare the must-have skills with your actual background.
- [ ] Add accurate job terms in context, not as a keyword block.
- [ ] Remove columns, icons, images, or tables that disturb text order.
- [ ] Copy all PDF text into a plain text editor and fix scrambled output.
- [ ] Change one item, re-scan, and stop when the paste-back is clean and the evidence is clear.

If layout work is slowing you down, [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv/sign-up) lets you upload a resume, keep its layout or select a built-in template, add a job description or link, and produce a CV from your profile facts. Review every generated claim before using it.

## Apply today checklist

Before you submit, confirm:

- [ ] The file is the requested type and opens correctly.
- [ ] Headings are plain, readable text.
- [ ] Must-have skills appear truthfully and in context.
- [ ] Five important bullets explain action, tool or method, and result where possible.
- [ ] The resume passes the plain-text paste test.
- [ ] You ran the final version through the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) with this job description.

Then apply. Keep the checked version with the job description so you can explain exactly which resume was submitted.

## Questions

### How can I grade my resume for free?

Use a resume checker that accepts your PDF and the target job description. Review keyword gaps, missing sections, contact fields, dates, and file parsing. Treat the result as a diagnostic, not as an employer ATS score.

### What is a good resume checker score?

There is no universal good score or employer cutoff. A higher number can reflect keyword overlap without proving that your experience fits the role. Read the missing skills, section warnings, and extracted text instead.

### Should I add every keyword a checker says is missing?

No. Add a missing term only when it accurately describes your real skills or experience. Put relevant skills in a work bullet, project, summary, or skills section when the context is truthful.

### Does a resume checker use the same system as an employer?

No. A public checker can identify common parsing and matching issues, but it does not produce the Workday, Greenhouse, or other employer system's number. Employer settings and review steps vary.

### Can YourUnique.cv rewrite my resume after I grade it?

[YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your profile facts and a job description to create a tailored CV, then provide an ATS read against that job. It does not invent missing experience, and its score is not an employer ATS score.
