Job Scanner: How to Test, Read the Score, and Fix What Matters
Use a job scanner to test resume keywords, sections, dates, contacts, and file type. Read the score, fix real gaps, and run a clean final check.

A job scanner can find problems before you submit a resume. Use it to compare your file with the job post, check whether important sections and dates can be read, and catch file or contact-field issues. Do not treat the headline score as an employer cutoff.
The useful result is a short repair list. Fix one issue, scan again, and stop when the important skills appear truthfully in context and your resume survives a plain-text paste test.
What a job scanner can tell you
Most resume checkers inspect some combination of the items below. No two tools use the same rules, and a public checker is not the same system an employer may use.
| Area | What the scanner may measure | What you should inspect yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Terms shared by your resume and the job description | Whether the terms appear in a relevant accomplishment, not in a keyword block |
| Sections | Headings such as Summary, Experience, Education, and Skills | Whether each section is clearly labeled and placed in a normal order |
| Dates | Month and year patterns, date ranges, and chronology | Whether every role has readable dates and whether gaps need explanation |
| Contact fields | Name, email, phone, location, and sometimes a LinkedIn URL | Whether contact details are selectable text, current, and easy to find |
| File type | Whether the upload is a readable PDF or another accepted format | Whether the PDF contains real text rather than a flat image |
| Formatting | Columns, tables, icons, headers, footers, and unusual symbols | Whether the content remains logical when copied into plain text |
A score compresses these checks into one number. That makes it easy to compare scans, but it can hide the reason for a change. A higher score is not automatically a better resume if the revision adds awkward repetition or claims skills you do not have.

How to run a job scanner test
Follow this order so the scan answers a specific question.
1. Save the version you plan to submit
Do not scan an old Word file and submit a different PDF. Export the actual resume as a PDF unless the application instructions request another format. Open the PDF and select a sentence with your cursor. If you cannot select text, the file may be an image rather than a readable document.
2. Copy the complete job description
Include the responsibilities, qualifications, tools, education requirements, and preferred skills. A short excerpt gives the scanner incomplete evidence. Remove unrelated navigation text if you copied from a job board, but keep the employer's wording for actual requirements.
3. Upload and paste
Use the ATS resume checker. Upload the resume PDF and paste the job description. Review the match score, missing keywords, and listed gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account.
Run the same file and the same job post each time. Otherwise, you are comparing different inputs.
If you want a draft based on your existing information, you can also paste the same job into YourUnique.cv. Its paid product can use your resume, optional LinkedIn URL, and the job description or job link to create a CV from your profile facts. It then provides an ATS read against that job. That read is a diagnostic, not a Workday or Greenhouse number.
How to read the score without chasing vanity numbers
Start with the details below the score. Ask four questions:
- Are the must-have skills present?
- Are they connected to the right job or project?
- Can the scanner read the section and dates?
- Did the score improve because of a meaningful repair?
Do not add a skill solely because it appears in a missing-keyword list. If the job asks for SQL and you have used SQL in reporting work, write that evidence into a bullet. If you have never used SQL, leave it out. A scan cannot turn missing experience into real experience.
A keyword also has context. A Skills section may help a tool detect “salesforce,” but an experience bullet gives the hiring reader evidence:
Managed Salesforce pipeline data for 80 active accounts and built weekly forecast reports.
This is stronger than a line that only says “Salesforce, forecasting, account management.” Use the job's wording where it is accurate. Keep your normal title if it is accurate, and clarify the function in a bullet rather than replacing the title with a title you never held.
A scored sample resume
Imagine a business analyst job asks for SQL, Tableau, requirements gathering, stakeholder communication, Agile, and data visualization.
| Test | Before repair | After repair |
|---|---|---|
| Scanner result | 61 | 78 |
| Must-have terms found | SQL and Agile missing | All six found in relevant sections |
| Sections | Experience and Education detected | Summary, Experience, Skills, and Education detected |
| Dates | One role showed year only | Roles use consistent month and year dates |
| File | Readable PDF, but footer held phone number | Readable PDF with contact details in the main header |
| Human review | Generic bullets, weak evidence | Bullets connect tools to work and outcomes |
The change from 61 to 78 is useful because the resume became clearer and more relevant. It does not mean 78 is a safe employer threshold. Another scanner could produce a different number, and an employer may configure its system differently.
Before:
Helped with reports and worked with different teams. Used data tools to support projects.
After:
Wrote SQL queries to combine customer and revenue data, then built Tableau dashboards used by sales leaders in weekly planning.
The revised bullet names the tool, describes the work, and places the skill in context. Only use it if it is true.
Fix the problems that affect reading
Missing sections
Use conventional headings: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education, and Certifications when relevant. A graphic label or decorative heading may look clear to a person but be harder for a parser to classify. Put work history in reverse chronological order.
Date formats
Use one format throughout, such as May 2021 to August 2024 or 05/2021 to 08/2024. Include a month and year for each role when possible. Avoid mixing 2021 to 2024, May 2021 to Present, and isolated years without a reason. Check that dates are selectable text, not part of an image.
Contact fields
Place your name, phone, email, city and state, and relevant professional profile link in the main document area. Do not put essential contact details only in a header, footer, text box, or image. Use a professional email address. Click the links in the exported PDF.
File type
Follow the employer's instructions first. If none are given, a simple, selectable-text PDF is often a practical choice. Avoid password protection. Open the exported file on another device. Confirm that page breaks, bullets, and spacing remain intact.
Keyword coverage
Compare the job post with your resume by category. Separate must-have skills, tools, responsibilities, and nice-to-haves. Add relevant terms to the Summary, Skills, or Experience section where they fit naturally. Do not create a dense list that makes the document difficult to read.
For a faster first pass, use the job description keyword extractor. It lists must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. You can optionally upload a resume PDF to see which keywords are already in the file. It does not tell you to claim skills you do not have.
Use a one-change repair loop
Do not rewrite the whole resume after every scan. Use this loop:
- Record the current score and the detailed gaps.
- Choose one repair, such as moving a phone number into the main header.
- Make the change without changing unrelated content.
- Export the same PDF format.
- Run the same job description through the scanner again.
- Check whether the intended issue changed.
- Read the revised bullet as a person, not just as a parser.
- Copy the PDF text into a plain-text document and inspect the order.
- Keep the change only if it is accurate and improves clarity.
- Stop when the text paste-back is clean and the job's must-have skills appear in context.
This prevents score chasing. It also shows which repair had an effect. If a change raises the number but makes a bullet misleading, reverse it.
Apply-today checklist
Before you submit, confirm:
- The file type matches the application instructions.
- The PDF opens and contains selectable text.
- Headings are clear and conventional.
- Contact fields are in the main document area.
- Dates use one readable format.
- The job's relevant skills appear truthfully.
- At least five experience bullets show specific work, tools, or results.
- No keyword block repeats terms without evidence.
- You copied the resume into plain text and checked the reading order.
- You ran the final file through the ATS resume checker with the target job description.
If you need a different layout after the content is fixed, review the YourUnique.cv templates. Then export the final file and repeat the plain-text paste test before applying.
Questions
- What does a job scanner check on a resume?
- A job scanner commonly checks keyword coverage against a job description, standard resume sections, date patterns, contact fields, and file readability. The exact checks vary by tool.
- What is a good job scanner score?
- There is no universal score that guarantees an interview or proves an employer's ATS will accept your resume. Use the number to find gaps, then confirm that the job's must-have skills appear accurately and in context.
- How can I test my resume for free?
- Upload your resume PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). It returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The result is not a Workday or Greenhouse score, and the PDF is scanned for the result rather than saved to an account.
- Should I add every missing keyword to my resume?
- No. Add a keyword only when it describes experience, tools, or knowledge you actually have. If you lack a must-have qualification, do not claim it to raise a scanner number.
- Can YourUnique.cv help rewrite a resume for a job?
- Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume, optional LinkedIn URL, and a job description or job link to create a CV from your profile facts. It also provides an ATS read against that job, but that read is not the employer's ATS score.
