Start with a single-column ms word ats friendly resume template. Use standard headings, ordinary text, safe fonts, and normal margins. The same structure works in Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Avoid design features that look polished on screen but create a poor text extraction order.

## The safest resume structure

An ATS reads extracted text. It does not see your page exactly as you see it in Word. A simple top-to-bottom order gives the parser fewer layout decisions to make.

Use this section order:

```text
NAME
City, State | Phone | Email | LinkedIn URL
SUMMARY
Two to four lines focused on the target role.
SKILLS
Skill or tool | Skill or tool | Skill or tool
EXPERIENCE
Job Title, Employer, Location | Month Year to Month Year
• Accomplishment bullet
• Accomplishment bullet
Earlier Job Title, Employer, Location | Month Year to Month Year
• Accomplishment bullet
• Accomplishment bullet
EDUCATION
Degree, School, Location | Graduation Year
OPTIONAL EXTRAS
Certifications, Projects, Languages, or Volunteer Experience
```

Keep the main sections in this order unless your experience requires a small change. For example, a new graduate may put Education before Experience. Do not rename sections in a way that hides their meaning. Use `Summary`, `Skills`, `Experience`, and `Education` rather than creative labels such as `What I Bring` or `My Background`.

A single-column resume also makes the document easier to review on a phone and easier to edit for each application. For more examples, compare this guide with the [ATS-Friendly Resume Template](https://yourunique.cv/articles/ats-friendly-resume-template).

## Word and Google Docs setup

Create the document in Word or Google Docs. Use the same basic settings in either version.

| Setting | Recommended choice | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Page layout | Single column | Keeps reading order predictable |
| Font | Calibri, Arial, or Georgia | Common fonts render consistently |
| Body size | 10 to 12 pt | Keeps text readable without crowding |
| Section headings | 11 to 14 pt, plain text | Makes sections easy to identify |
| Margins | 0.5 to 1 inch | Leaves enough space for text and printing |
| Alignment | Left aligned | Avoids unusual extraction order |
| Dates | Plain text on the same line or next line | Keeps dates connected to the role |
| File types | DOCX when requested, PDF when accepted | Follows the employer's instructions |

Use bold for your name, job titles, and section headings if you want visual separation. Use one font family throughout. Do not rely on color, underlining, or graphics to communicate important information.

In Word, inspect the Navigation Pane and confirm that each section appears in the expected order. In Google Docs, use the document outline if you apply heading styles. These checks help you find misplaced sections, but they do not prove how an employer's ATS will process the file.

## What to leave out

Do not use these elements in the core resume layout:

- Text boxes for contact details, summaries, or experience
- Tables to position employers, dates, or bullet points
- Icons for phone, email, location, or LinkedIn
- Photos, logos, charts, rating bars, or decorative graphics
- Two-column or three-column skill grids
- Headers and footers for information the ATS must read
- Decorative section names that replace standard headings

The problem is not that every ATS always fails on every one of these features. The problem is that each feature can change the extraction order or hide text from a parser. A plain text contact line is safer than a row of icons. A normal paragraph is safer than a text box.

### Three layouts that can fail parsing

#### 1. The two-column template

The left column contains dates and the right column contains employers and bullets. A parser may read all the dates first, then all the employers. The result can separate a job from its duties.

#### 2. The sidebar template

A colored sidebar holds contact details, skills, and certifications. The main area holds experience. The sidebar may be read at the end, in the wrong order, or with some text missing.

#### 3. The table-based template

A table uses one column for employers, one for dates, and one for bullets. It may look tidy in Word, but extracted text can merge cells or scramble their order. It also makes editing harder when a bullet wraps to a new line.

If you want a second comparison, see the [Microsoft Word ATS-Friendly Resume Template](https://yourunique.cv/articles/microsoft-word-ats-friendly-resume-template). The same safety rules apply when you start from a Google Docs file.

## How to customize the template for one job

Tailoring does not require redesigning the document. Keep the section names, order, font, margins, and column structure unchanged. Change the content inside the structure.

1. Read the job description and identify repeated requirements, tools, certifications, and job-specific terms.
2. Keep only the terms that describe skills or experience you actually have.
3. Put the most relevant terms in the Summary and Skills sections when they are accurate.
4. Rewrite experience bullets so the relevant work appears earlier and uses the employer's wording where it is truthful.
5. Remove low-value bullets that take space away from relevant evidence.
6. Save a new copy with a clear filename, such as `FirstName-LastName-TargetRole.docx`.

Do not add a tool, certification, or responsibility just because it appears in the job description. A keyword must be supported by your real background. Do not change `Experience` to `Career Highlights` simply to make the resume sound different. Standard headings help both extraction and human review.

For a fast first pass, run the job description through the [job description keyword extractor](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/job-description-keyword-extractor). It lists must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. If you add the optional resume PDF, it can mark which keywords are already present. Use it to find gaps, not to invent skills.

Then you can paste the same job into [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) if you want a draft based on your real profile facts. Review every generated line. Your resume still needs the plain-text checks below.

## Downloadable-style plain text example

Use the following as the content for a Word or Google Docs version. Replace the placeholders, then apply the font and margin rules above.

This example uses ordinary text. It does not need a graphic header, a sidebar, or a skills bar. It also gives the employer evidence through actions and results instead of listing duties alone.

## Check the file before you apply

First, save the editable Word or Google Docs version. Then export a PDF if the posting accepts PDF. Open the exported file and inspect page breaks, bullets, dates, and contact details. If the employer asks for DOCX, submit DOCX instead of choosing PDF by habit.

Next, copy all visible resume text and paste it into a plain text editor. Check the order. You should see the name, contact information, summary, skills, experience, and education in the intended sequence. Look for missing bullets, broken dates, repeated lines, strange symbols, or contact information that has disappeared.

A public resume checker can identify possible keyword gaps or extraction issues. It cannot prove the exact result in an employer's ATS. Treat the result as a diagnostic, not a hiring decision.

## Questions

### What is the safest layout for an ms word ats friendly resume template?

A single-column layout with standard section headings, left-aligned text, normal margins, and simple bullet points is the safest starting point for an ms word ats friendly resume template.

### Can I use the same ATS-friendly resume in Word and Google Docs?

Yes. Build the resume with ordinary paragraphs, headings, and bullet lists. Check the exported PDF and DOCX because spacing, bullets, and page breaks can change between Word and Google Docs.

### Should I use tables to align dates and employers?

No. Tables can cause reading order problems when text is extracted. Use left-aligned entries with dates on their own line or at the end of a plain text line.

### How can I test an ATS-friendly resume before applying?

Upload the resume PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) to review keywords and gaps. The result is a useful check, not the employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other ATS score.

### Can YourUnique.cv create a tailored version from my resume?

Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your profile facts and a job description to create a tailored CV, then provide an ATS read against that job. After the resume is ready, [Job Radar](https://yourunique.cv/job-radar) can find live ATS career-page postings that fit the same profile.
