Patient Care Tech Resume Examples: ATS Keywords, Skills, and Sample Bullets

Patient care tech resume examples work best when they do two things: match the language in the job posting and prove that you used those skills in patient care. Hiring teams and resume systems usually look for clinical tasks, documentation tools, safety practices, certifications, and evidence that you can work reliably on a busy unit.

Use terms such as vital signs, ADLs, phlebotomy, EHR, patient safety, and CNA where they accurately describe your background. Then repeat the same ideas in experience bullets with a unit, patient ratio, tool, or measurable result.

What hiring teams and ATS look for

A patient care technician may work in a hospital, rehabilitation center, long-term care facility, outpatient clinic, or emergency department. The job title can change, but the resume usually needs to make these points easy to find:

• Direct patient support, including bathing, feeding, toileting, repositioning, ambulation, and transfers.
• Clinical tasks, including vital signs, blood glucose checks, specimen collection, and phlebotomy when authorized.
• Safety habits, including fall prevention, infection control, patient identification, and timely escalation.
• Documentation in an EHR or other approved charting system.
• Teamwork with nurses, providers, therapists, transport staff, and families.
• Required credentials, such as CNA certification, BLS, CPR, or state-specific training.

An ATS may scan for exact phrases from the job description. It does not replace human review. Use the employer's wording when it truthfully matches your experience. Do not add a procedure, device, certification, or software platform you have not used.

Target keyword set for a patient care tech resume

Start by pulling terms from the specific posting. This sample set covers common PCT job descriptions:

Keep the top of the page simple. Use contact information that you check regularly. Do not place important details inside a header or footer if the file may be parsed by an ATS.

The summary uses the target terms naturally. It also gives a patient ratio, unit experience, certification, and work-quality detail. Replace each fact with your own information.

Skills block: split hard and soft skills

A split skills section helps a reader find clinical abilities quickly. Keep the wording consistent with the job description.

Hard skills: Vital signs; ADLs; phlebotomy; specimen collection; blood glucose checks; EKG preparation; intake and output; patient transfers; ambulation; repositioning; infection control; fall prevention; EHR documentation; patient transport; CNA; BLS; CPR.

Soft skills need evidence later. A bullet about responding to call lights during a busy shift is more useful than a bare phrase such as “strong work ethic.”

Full sample experience section

Use three to five bullets per role. The examples below show four bullets for each job. Change the numbers, tools, units, and duties so they reflect your real record.

• Support 8 to 12 med-surg patients per shift with bathing, toileting, feeding, repositioning, ambulation, and safe transfers.

These bullets repeat the keywords as proof. “Vital signs” appears with documentation. “Phlebotomy” appears with patient identification and specimen handling. “Patient safety” appears through fall prevention and transfers. The result is more specific than a duty list.

Common patient care tech resume mistakes

Listing duties without proof

“Responsible for patient care” says little. State who you supported, what you did, how often, and where you documented it.

Hiding tools and systems

If the posting asks for EHR experience, name the system you used, such as Epic or Cerner. If you used another system, list it accurately and describe the documentation tasks.

Mixing up clinical and retail language

Remove leftover retail phrases such as “managed cash drawer” or “hit sales targets” unless they support a relevant transferable skill. Likewise, do not use clinical language for retail duties. Keep each job accurate and relevant.

Listing credentials without status

Write “CNA, Ohio, active” or “BLS, American Heart Association, expires June 2026” when accurate. Do not list an expired or incomplete credential as current.

Overloading the skills section

A 40-item skills list can bury the terms that matter. Match the posting and keep the section readable.

Using a hard-to-parse design

Tables, text boxes, graphics, columns, icons, and decorative headings can create extraction problems. Use standard headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, and Certifications.

Check the file against the job description
