# Resume ATS Analyzer: Parsing, Keywords, and Recruiter View

Use a resume ATS analyzer to test parsing, fix headings, add job keywords, rewrite quantified bullets, and pass a plain-text check before you apply.

> A resume ATS analyzer can reveal parsing errors, missing job terms, and content gaps, but you still need to test the file in plain text and tailor it to one job before applying.

A resume ATS analyzer helps you find three common problems before you apply: the system cannot read part of the file, the resume misses terms from the job description, or the content does not prove your results. Fix those problems in that order.

You do not need a mysterious score cutoff. You need a readable file, standard section names, accurate job language, and evidence in your bullets. Use this repair sequence today.

## 1. Start with one target job

Do not optimize a resume against a whole industry. Choose one posting. Copy the complete job description into a working document. Keep the company title, required qualifications, tools, methods, and repeated phrases.

The job description is your test case. A resume that matches one real role is easier to inspect than a general file stuffed with unrelated terms.

Run the posting through the [job description keyword extractor](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/job-description-keyword-extractor). It lists must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. You can add your resume PDF to see which terms are already present. Treat the output as an editing list, not a list of claims. Only use a keyword when your background supports it.

## 2. Repair the file before editing the words

ATS problems often start in the document structure. Use this quick file inspection:

| Check | Repair | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| File type | Follow the portal instruction. If none exists, use a clean PDF or DOCX and test it. | Some portals handle one format better than another. |
| File name | Use `FirstName-LastName-Role-Resume.pdf`. | It is easier for a recruiter to identify and save. |
| Columns | Replace multi-column layouts with one vertical column. | Reading order can break when text is extracted. |
| Tables | Remove tables used for layout, sidebars, or skills. | Cells may be read out of order or skipped. |
| Graphics | Delete logos, icons, charts, and headshot images. | Important meaning may not be available as text. |
| Headers and footers | Move contact details and key text into the main page body. | Some parsers treat these areas differently. |
| Fonts | Use a common font and readable size. | Text should remain selectable and legible after export. |

A text-based PDF is different from a scanned image. Select a sentence with your cursor. If you cannot select the words, run OCR or rebuild the document. Do not submit an image of your resume.

For more background on this step, see [ATS Resume: Parsing, Keywords, and Recruiter View](https://yourunique.cv/articles/ats-resume). The same rule applies to LinkedIn Easy Apply: the file still needs clean, extractable text.

## 3. Rename headings so the structure is obvious

Use headings that a recruiter and parser can recognize quickly:

- Summary
- Skills
- Professional Experience
- Education
- Certifications
- Projects

Avoid creative labels such as “What I Bring,” “Career Story,” or “My Toolkit.” They may look distinctive, but they make the document structure less clear. Keep the heading separate from the content. Do not put “Skills” inside a graphic or table.

Put experience in reverse chronological order. Use one date style throughout, such as `Jan 2022 to Mar 2025`. Keep the employer, job title, location, and dates close to the relevant role.

## 4. Add a plain Skills block

Create a visible Skills section below your summary or above experience. Use text separated by commas or bullets. Group skills only when the group name is clear.

Example:

```text
Skills
Project management, stakeholder communication, SQL, Tableau, Jira, process improvement, user research
```

Do not hide skills in a sidebar. Do not repeat a skill ten times. Include the exact tool or method name when it is accurate. If the posting says “customer relationship management,” use that wording if your work supports it, even if your old resume only says “client database.”

## 5. Run the keyword pass against one job

Select 8 to 12 useful terms from the posting. Include a mix of required skills, tools, certifications, and work methods. Then place each term where it is supported:

| Job term | Resume location | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Salesforce | Skills and experience bullet | Add the exact tool name to a real task. |
| Forecasting | Experience bullet | Connect it to a result or decision. |
| Cross-functional | Summary or experience | Use it where teams or functions are named. |
| SQL | Skills and experience bullet | State the work performed if applicable. |
| Vendor management | Experience bullet | Add the relationship or process you handled. |

Do not force all 12 terms into the summary. A keyword is stronger when it appears beside proof. If you used SQL to build a report, say so. If you only saw a tool in a job posting, leave it out.

Use the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) after this pass. Upload the resume PDF and paste the same job description. It returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account. The score is a review signal, not a Workday or Greenhouse number.

If you want a draft built from your own profile facts, you can paste the same job into [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv). It can use an uploaded resume, an optional LinkedIn URL, and the job description to create a CV while keeping your chosen layout or a built-in [template](https://yourunique.cv/templates). Review every line before using it. A tool should not invent experience for you.

## 6. Rewrite five bullets with numbers

Pick the five bullets closest to the target role. Rewrite each one using this repair pattern:

`Action + task or method + scope + measurable result`

Weak:

```text
Responsible for improving the customer onboarding process.
```

Stronger:

```text
Redesigned customer onboarding with a four-step checklist and email sequence, cutting average setup time from 10 days to 6.
```

Weak:

```text
Managed social media campaigns.
```

Stronger:

```text
Managed LinkedIn and email campaigns across 3 product launches, generating 420 qualified leads and a 19% email conversion rate.
```

Numbers can describe revenue, time, volume, cost, quality, response rate, team size, project count, or frequency. Use real figures. You can use a range or percentage when exact disclosure is not appropriate. Do not add a number simply to make a bullet look measurable.

Start with a direct verb. Remove “responsible for,” “helped with,” and “worked on” unless the sentence needs them for accuracy. Name the tool, audience, process, or output when it helps connect the bullet to the job.

## 7. Test the parsing result in plain text

A resume ATS analyzer is useful, but perform a manual test too. Open a plain-text box such as Notepad or TextEdit in plain-text mode. Copy the entire resume and paste it there.

Inspect the pasted version from top to bottom:

1. Does the name appear first?
2. Are contact details readable and grouped together?
3. Do headings appear in the right order?
4. Does each job keep its title, employer, and dates together?
5. Are bullets in the correct order?
6. Are skills still visible?
7. Did symbols become empty boxes or random characters?
8. Did columns merge two sections into confusing lines?
9. Did the PDF lose text from a header, footer, table, or image?
10. Can you tell which bullets belong to which role?

If the pasted text is confusing, return to the source document. Remove columns, tables, text boxes, icons, and unnecessary page furniture. Export again, then repeat the paste test. This test does not reproduce every employer system. It exposes obvious extraction failures that you can repair.

## 8. Review the recruiter view

After parsing is fixed, read the resume as a person would. The first half of page one should identify your target role, relevant strengths, and recent evidence. A parser may find a term, but a recruiter still decides whether the evidence is credible and easy to scan.

Check these points:

- The job title or target function is clear.
- The summary reflects the selected role, not every role you might want.
- The Skills block supports the job description.
- Recent experience gets the most detail.
- The five revised bullets contain results or clear scope.
- Older or unrelated content does not crowd out relevant work.

## 9. Run the final 12-point repair checklist

Before you upload, check every item:

- [ ] The file uses the format requested by the application portal.
- [ ] The file name includes your name and target role.
- [ ] The resume is selectable text, not a scanned image.
- [ ] The layout uses one main column.
- [ ] No tables, text boxes, graphics, or sidebars carry important information.
- [ ] Headings use standard names such as Summary, Skills, and Experience.
- [ ] Contact details appear in the main document body.
- [ ] A plain Skills block lists accurate tools and methods.
- [ ] Eight to twelve supported terms from this job appear naturally.
- [ ] Five relevant bullets include real numbers, scope, or outcomes.
- [ ] The plain-text paste test keeps the reading order intact.
- [ ] The final PDF or DOCX opens correctly after export.

## Questions

### What does a resume ATS analyzer check?

A resume ATS analyzer checks whether resume text can be read, compares your content with a job description, identifies missing terms, and points out possible formatting or skills gaps. It cannot prove the score used by a specific employer system.

### Should I use PDF or DOCX for an ATS resume?

Use the file type requested by the application portal. If no type is specified, a clean, text-based PDF is often a practical choice, but test the exported file because a broken PDF can hide or scramble text.

### Can I add every keyword found in a job description?

No. Add keywords that accurately describe your experience, tools, methods, or qualifications. Do not claim skills or experience you do not have.

### Is a public ATS checker the same as an employer's ATS?

No. A public checker can find likely parsing and keyword issues, but it is not the employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other system and cannot prove how that employer will score your file.

### Where can I find jobs after fixing my resume?

After your resume is ready, [Job Radar](https://yourunique.cv/job-radar) can find live public ATS career-page postings that fit your profile. It does not search LinkedIn, Indeed, Naukri, or Workday.
