A resume ATS score can help you find repairable problems before you apply. Run your PDF against the exact job description, inspect the missing terms and parsing gaps, fix one issue at a time, and scan again. Do not treat the number as an employer's pass or fail line.

What a resume ATS score can tell you

An ATS checker compares your resume with a job description and tests common machine-readable details. It may look for job terms, standard sections, dates, contact fields, and file characteristics. These checks are useful because a recruiter or application form may need to extract your information before anyone reads the page.

The score is a diagnostic. It is not the score from Workday, Greenhouse, or any other employer system. Different tools use different rules. A high result cannot guarantee an interview, and a low result does not prove that you are unqualified.

For a broader explanation of the scan process, see ATS Score: Free Scan Workflow Before You Hit Apply. The workflow below focuses on what to do with the result.

Run the scan with the exact job post

Use the complete job description, not a shortened summary. Include the title, requirements, responsibilities, tools, certifications, and preferred qualifications. The wording gives the checker something specific to compare.

Then prepare your latest resume as a text-based PDF. Make sure you can select the words with your cursor. Do not upload a screenshot of a resume. An image may look perfect to you but contain little or no usable text.

Run the file through the ATS resume checker. Upload the resume PDF and paste the job description. The tool returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. It scans the PDF for the result and does not save it to an account.

You can also paste the job post into the job description keyword extractor to separate must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. If you add a resume PDF, it marks which keywords already appear in the file. Do not add a skill just because the tool lists it. Use only terms supported by your real experience.

After the free scan, you can paste the same job into YourUnique.cv if you want a draft based on your real profile facts. The paid product can retain your layout or use a built-in template, create a CV from your profile and job description, and provide an ATS read against that job. It does not make a public checker the same as an employer's system.

Read the score without chasing a magic number

Start with the details behind the number. Ask four questions:

  1. Which must-have skills are missing?
  2. Are those skills present under a different, truthful name?
  3. Can the system identify every section and date?
  4. Does the extracted text still make sense in order?

A missing keyword may be a real gap. It may also be a wording gap. For example, a job may ask for “customer relationship management,” while your resume says “CRM.” If you have done that work, use both terms in a natural bullet. If you have never used the requested tool, do not insert it to raise the score.

Give more attention to must-have requirements than to a long list of nice-to-haves. A score can rise because of repeated low-value terms while an essential certification or core tool remains absent. That is a vanity result.

Illustrative scored sample

These figures are an example of a repair process, not a recommended cutoff or an employer score.

Resume versionScan resultWhat the result revealedRepair made
Before58/100“SaaS,” “renewals,” and “Salesforce” were absent. Skills were buried in a sidebar. One role had month-only dates.Moved skills into a normal section, added truthful terms to relevant bullets, and changed dates to a consistent month and year format.
After82/100Core terms appeared in context. The section structure and dates parsed more clearly. One nice-to-have tool was still missing.Stopped. The applicant did not claim the missing tool or keep editing for a higher number.

The after score is not proof that the resume will pass an employer's ATS. It shows that the file became easier for this checker to compare with this job description.

Check the four areas that cause most repair work

AreaWhat a typical checker measuresWhat to inspect yourself
KeywordsExact or related terms from the job descriptionMust-have skills, tools, certifications, job title, and industry language in relevant context
SectionsRecognizable headings such as Summary, Experience, Education, and SkillsClear headings, normal reading order, and no key details trapped in headers, footers, icons, or graphics
DatesConsistent date patterns and readable employment timelinesUse one format, such as “Jan 2022 to Mar 2024,” and avoid unexplained gaps or mixed styles
File typeWhether the uploaded file can be read and its text extractedFollow the job post's instructions. Test the PDF by selecting and pasting its text

Also inspect your contact fields. Put your name, phone number, email address, city and region, and relevant link in ordinary text near the top. Do not place all contact details in an image or decorative text box. Keep the email address professional and easy to copy.

Your employment history should use standard role and company lines. Your education and certifications need their own readable entries. A two-column design, charts, skill bars, logos, and heavy graphics can interfere with extraction even when the visual page looks polished.

Use a one-change repair loop

Do not rewrite the entire resume after one scan. Make one controlled change, save a new version, and re-scan. This shows which repair affected the result and prevents accidental claims.

Use this order:

  1. Repair file readability. Export a text-based PDF and confirm that text can be selected.
  2. Replace decorative or vague headings with standard headings.
  3. Move contact details into ordinary text near the top.
  4. Add missing must-have terms only where your experience supports them.
  5. Put tools and methods inside experience bullets, not only in a keyword block.
  6. Standardize dates across every role, education entry, and certification.
  7. Check that job titles and employers are clearly separated.
  8. Remove duplicate keywords that do not add meaning.
  9. Paste the extracted text into a plain-text editor and read it from top to bottom.
  10. Re-scan the revised PDF against the same job description.

Stop when the text paste-back is clean and the job's must-have skills appear in context. Do not keep changing the resume to pursue a larger number. A repetitive document can become less useful to a human reader.

Before you submit, run this 10-item fix checklist

  • I used the exact job description in the scan.
  • My PDF contains selectable text, not a page image.
  • My name, phone, email, location, and relevant link are readable contact fields.
  • My headings use common labels such as Summary, Experience, Skills, and Education.
  • My job titles, employers, and dates are easy to identify.
  • My dates use one consistent format.
  • The must-have skills I genuinely have appear in relevant experience context.
  • My file type follows the employer's instructions.
  • I pasted the resume text into a plain-text editor and checked its order.
  • I changed one thing, re-scanned, and stopped when the file was clean.

If the layout is causing the problem, YourUnique.cv templates can help you compare simpler structures. You still need to inspect the exported file and verify every detail. A template cannot supply missing experience.

Apply-today checklist

Before you hit submit, confirm:

  • The file type matches the job post.
  • The headings are clear and standard.
  • The relevant skills appear truthfully in context.
  • At least five strong bullets connect your work to the target role.
  • The resume passes the plain-text paste test.
  • You ran the final file through the ATS resume checker using the exact job description.

Then apply. The goal is a readable, truthful resume that gives both software and people the information they need.

Questions

What is a good resume ATS score?
There is no universal good score or employer cutoff. Use the score to find missing job terms, sections, parsing problems, and file issues, then confirm that the must-have skills appear in truthful context.
Does an ATS checker show the score an employer will see?
No. A public checker can identify common resume and keyword problems, but it is not the same system or score used by an employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other recruiting platform.
What file should I upload for an ATS scan?
Use the file type requested in the job post. If no type is specified, a text-based PDF is often practical, but confirm that its text can be selected and pasted into a plain-text field without losing key content.
Which free tool can I use to check my resume ATS score?
Upload your resume PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). It returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account.
Can YourUnique.cv fix my resume automatically?
[YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can create a tailored CV from your profile facts and a job description, then provide an ATS read against that job. Review every claim before using the exported PDF.
