A resume headline sample should name the role you want, add a useful specialty or tool stack, and include years of experience or a concrete result. Put it directly below your name and contact information, before your professional summary.

The headline is a short targeting line. It is not your current job title and it is not a paragraph. Keep it readable for a recruiter and easy for an ATS to parse.

## Headline vs job title vs professional summary

These three resume elements serve different purposes.

| Resume element | What it means | Example | Main job |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resume headline | A short statement aimed at the role you want | IT Help Desk Specialist | Microsoft 365, Active Directory | 4 Years | Connects your profile to the target role |
| Job title | The official or commonly understood name of a position you held | Technical Support Representative | Shows what you were hired to do |
| Professional summary | A short paragraph describing your background, strengths, and relevant results | Technical support professional with four years of experience resolving user issues across Microsoft 365 and Active Directory environments. | Gives context and evidence |

Do not replace an official job title with a more senior title in your employment history. You can use a target role in the headline if it accurately reflects the job you are pursuing. If your official title is unusual, add a plain-language clarification in parentheses, such as “Client Success Liaison (Customer Success Coordinator).”

Your headline can repeat a target keyword from the job description. Your summary should then support it with tools, scope, and results. Repetition is useful when it sounds natural. Repeating a phrase many times without evidence is keyword stuffing. See [ATS resume keywords: how to match the job without stuffing](https://yourunique.cv/articles/ats-resume-keywords) for a closer look at this balance.

## Where to place the headline

Use this order at the top of the first page:

```text
Full Name
City, State | Phone | Email | LinkedIn URL
Target Role | Specialty or Stack | Years or Result
Professional Summary
Core Skills
Professional Experience
Education
```

Place the headline below the contact line. Keep it near the top so the reader sees your target role before scanning the rest of the page.

Use normal text, not a text box, image, header graphic, or decorative badge. A parser may not read design elements in the order you expect. Keep the headline on one line when possible. If it wraps, that is fine. Do not shrink the font to force it into one line.

A headline does not need the label “Headline.” The content itself can sit between the contact information and the summary. If you use a label, use a standard heading such as “Professional Headline.”

## The resume headline formula

Use one of these structures:

**Target role + specialty or stack + years of experience**

**Target role + domain + concrete result**

Choose terms from the job description when they describe work you have actually done. Do not add a tool, certification, or skill only because it appears in the posting.

| 20 | Target Role + Core Skill + Result | Account Executive | Mid-Market SaaS Sales | 118% Quota Attainment |

The result does not need to be a revenue number. It can be a volume, time reduction, quality measure, retention figure, project count, or service level. Use a result only when you can support it in your work history.

## Good and vague headline examples

A strong headline gives the reader a role and a reason to keep reading.

| Vague headline | Better headline | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing Professional | B2B Marketing Coordinator | HubSpot, Email Campaigns | 3 Years | Names the function, tools, and experience level |
| Results-Oriented Leader | Operations Manager | Process Improvement | 3 Distribution Sites | Replaces a broad claim with scope |
| Tech Wizard | IT Support Specialist | Windows, Microsoft 365 | 4 Years | Uses a standard role and searchable skills |
| Creative Problem Solver | Product Designer | Mobile UX and Design Systems | 6 Years | Identifies the design area and specialty |
| Hardworking Salesperson | Account Executive | Mid-Market SaaS | 118% Quota Attainment | Adds the market and a verifiable result |
| Recent Graduate Seeking Opportunity | Junior Data Analyst | SQL, Excel, Tableau | Internship Experience | Gives the target role and skills |

Avoid claims such as “visionary,” “ninja,” “growth hacker,” or “chief happiness officer” unless that is the recognized title in your field and the job posting uses it. A headline such as “Data Storyteller Who Turns Chaos Into Clarity” may sound personal, but it does not tell a parser or recruiter whether you are a data analyst, business analyst, or reporting specialist.

A too-clever headline can also hide the terms that matter. “The Person Who Makes Customers Stay” is less useful than “Customer Success Manager | SaaS Renewals and Onboarding.” Put personality in your summary or cover letter after the basic role is clear.

## How to write the headline for an ATS resume

Start with the job description. Find the exact target role, repeated tools, required domain terms, and stated level. Then compare those terms with your background.

For example, if a posting asks for an “IT Support Specialist” with Microsoft 365, Active Directory, ticket management, and remote support, a relevant headline could be:

```text
IT Support Specialist | Microsoft 365, Active Directory, Remote Support | 4 Years
```

Do not turn the headline into a keyword block:

```text
IT Support Microsoft 365 Active Directory Tickets Help Desk Troubleshooting Remote Desktop Hardware Software
```

The second version is hard to read and gives no indication of level, focus, or evidence. Put the remaining skills in a Core Skills section and prove them in experience bullets.

Use standard spelling for tools and roles. If the posting uses both an abbreviation and a full term, you can use both elsewhere in the resume when accurate, such as “Search Engine Optimization (SEO).” Keep the headline short enough to scan in a second or two.

Run the file through the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) to compare a resume PDF with the job description and review missing keywords and gaps. The result is a file scan, not a Workday or Greenhouse number. If you want a tailored draft from your real profile, paste the same job into [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv). It can create a CV from your profile facts and provide an ATS read against that job. Still perform the plain-text paste test yourself.

## Match the headline to your experience level

Your headline should not overstate your background. Use “Junior,” “Associate,” or “Entry-Level” when those labels fit the target role. If you are changing careers, connect transferable experience to the new function.

Examples:

- “Junior Business Analyst | Excel, SQL, Process Mapping | Internship Experience”
- “Customer Success Associate | SaaS Onboarding | 5 Years in Client Services”
- “Project Coordinator | Scheduling, Vendor Communication | 2 Years in Construction”

A career change headline can name the desired role while the summary explains the transition. Your experience bullets should show the work behind the claim. Do not call yourself a senior engineer, manager, or specialist if your record does not support that level.

For role-specific ideas, compare the keyword and bullet guidance in the [IT Help Desk resume examples](https://yourunique.cv/articles/it-help-desk-resume) or the [Quality Control resume examples](https://yourunique.cv/articles/quality-control-resume). The same rule applies across industries: name the job, include relevant terms, and support claims with evidence.

## Apply-today checklist

Before you submit the resume, confirm each item:

- [ ] Save the final file as a text-readable PDF unless the employer requests another format.
- [ ] Put your headline below your contact information and above the summary.
- [ ] Use standard section headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, and Education.
- [ ] Check that the headline and skills section use accurate terms from the job description.
- [ ] Rewrite at least five experience bullets to include actions, tools, scope, or results.
- [ ] Copy the PDF text and paste it into a plain-text editor. Check the reading order, contact details, headline, headings, and bullets.
- [ ] Run the PDF and job description through the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) and review gaps without adding skills you do not have.

If you want help applying the same targeting method across the whole document, [start with YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv/sign-up) and use your profile facts plus the job description. Review every generated line before sending it.

A clear headline gives the reader the right context immediately. It does not replace evidence. Make the target role easy to find, then let the summary and five or more focused bullets prove the fit.

## Questions

### What is a good resume headline sample?

A good resume headline sample is specific to the target role, includes a relevant specialty or tool stack, and adds years of experience or a measurable result. For example: “IT Help Desk Specialist | Microsoft 365, Active Directory | 4 Years.”

### Where does a resume headline go?

Place the resume headline directly below your name and contact information, before your professional summary and work experience. Use a simple text line that can be selected and copied.

### Is a resume headline the same as a job title?

No. A job title is the name of a position you held, such as “Marketing Coordinator.” A resume headline is a positioning statement for the role you want next, such as “B2B Marketing Coordinator | Email Campaigns and HubSpot.”

### How can I check whether my headline matches a job description?

Paste the job description into the [job description keyword extractor](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/job-description-keyword-extractor) to find must-have terms, tools, and nice-to-haves. Add only skills and experience you actually have.

### Can YourUnique.cv help write a resume headline?

Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your profile facts and a job description to create a tailored CV draft, then provide an ATS read against that job. It does not prove what score an employer's Workday or Greenhouse system will assign.
