A resume scanner free tool can find problems before you submit. Use it to check whether the file can be read, the job’s real requirements appear in your resume, and your sections, dates, and contact details are clear.

Do not treat the score as a hiring threshold. Scanner scores are tool-specific. The practical goal is a readable resume with accurate skills in context, not a perfect number.

## What a free resume scanner can tell you

A checker compares your resume with a job description and inspects the text it can extract. Depending on the tool, it may flag missing keywords, unclear headings, absent contact fields, inconsistent dates, or a file that does not parse well.

It cannot prove how an employer’s ATS will score you. Employers use different systems, settings, forms, and review processes. A public checker is a diagnostic tool, not a copy of Workday, Greenhouse, or another employer system.

Here is what to look for:

| Area | What the checker may measure | What you should verify yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Terms that overlap with the job description | Whether each term is accurate and appears in a useful sentence |
| Sections | Headings such as Experience, Education, Skills, and Certifications | Whether each section is easy to identify and in a sensible order |
| Dates | Month and year patterns, ordering, and consistency | Whether dates are truthful, aligned, and easy to read |
| Contact fields | Name, email, phone, location, and links | Whether the fields are visible in the text copy and current |
| File type | Whether the uploaded PDF can be scanned | Whether the PDF contains selectable text rather than page images |

## How to run the scan

1. Save the resume for this job as a PDF unless the employer gives different instructions.
2. Copy the complete job description. Include the requirements, responsibilities, tools, and qualifications.
3. Upload the resume and paste the job description into a checker.
4. Record the score and the specific findings. Do not record the score alone.
5. Copy the results into a short repair list.

For a direct test, use the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). Upload a resume PDF and paste the job description. The tool reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account.

If you want more background, [Free ATS Resume Scanner: How to Test, Read the Score, and Fix What Matters](https://yourunique.cv/articles/free-ats-resume-scanner) covers the same testing process from another angle.

## Read the score without chasing it

A score is useful only when you can connect it to a fix. A low result may point to missing job terms, but it may also reflect a formatting or extraction problem. A higher result may simply mean that your resume repeats many words from the posting.

Treat the report as four questions:

- Can the tool read all the important text?
- Are the must-have skills present if you genuinely have them?
- Are those skills tied to work, projects, education, or certifications?
- Are the resume sections, dates, and contact details clear?

Ignore vanity signals. A tool may reward repeated terms without judging whether the claim is credible. Do not add a skill you do not have. Do not copy every phrase from the job description. Do not remove useful evidence just to make a number rise.

## Scored sample: before and after

The figures below are illustrative results from a hypothetical checker. They are not employer cutoffs and do not predict an interview.

| Version | Score | Findings | Repair made |
|---|---:|---|---|
| Before | 54/100 | 6 of 10 identified job terms, unclear contact extraction, “Project Manager” heading not detected, dates use mixed formats | Rebuilt the header, changed the heading to “Professional Experience,” standardized dates, and added accurate delivery terms to relevant bullets |
| After | 82/100 | 9 of 10 identified terms, all main sections detected, dates consistent, one requirement still absent | Stopped. The remaining requirement was not part of the applicant’s experience |

Before:

> Alex Morgan | alex@email.com | 555-0100
>
> Work
> Project Manager, Northstar, 2021 to Present
> Managed software projects and worked with teams.
>
> Skills: Jira, communication, planning

After:

> Alex Morgan | alex@email.com | 555-0100 | Chicago, IL | linkedin.com/in/alexmorgan
>
> Professional Experience
> Project Manager, Northstar | March 2021 to Present
> - Managed software delivery plans in Jira across four product teams, tracking risks, dependencies, and release dates.
> - Coordinated sprint planning with engineering and design, reducing open blockers by 20% over two quarters.
>
> Skills
> Project management, Agile delivery, Jira, risk management, stakeholder communication

The second version does more than add terms. It gives each term a place in the work. It also uses a conventional heading, a readable date, and an extractable contact line.

## Repair keywords in context

Start with the job’s must-have requirements. Separate them from nice-to-have terms and general wording. A keyword belongs in your resume only when it reflects your actual background.

For example, if the job asks for “vendor management,” do not place those words in a detached keyword block if your experience supports a stronger statement. Write a bullet such as:

> Managed vendor renewals, service reviews, and purchase orders for a $400,000 annual software budget.

If you have used a related tool but not the exact one, be precise. You can name the tool you used and describe the transferable task. Do not claim experience with the requested tool.

Use the [job description keyword extractor](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/job-description-keyword-extractor) when you need to separate must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. It can optionally mark which terms already appear in your resume PDF. It does not tell you to invent missing skills.

After you understand the gaps, you can paste the same job into [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) if you want a draft based on your real profile facts. The free tools scan files. They do not rewrite the CV.

## Check sections, dates, contact fields, and file type

A keyword match cannot compensate for text that disappears during extraction.

### Sections

Use familiar headings such as Professional Summary, Professional Experience, Education, Skills, and Certifications. Avoid turning every section into a graphic label. Keep the main content in the document body.

### Dates

Use one format throughout. “March 2021 to Present” and “03/2021 to Present” are both readable, but mixing them creates unnecessary uncertainty. Check that roles are in reverse chronological order and that overlapping dates are explainable.

### Contact fields

Put your name, email, phone, location, and relevant professional link in a simple header. Then copy the document text into a plain-text editor. Confirm that the contact details appear and are not trapped in an image, shape, or decorative header.

### File type

Follow the employer’s instructions first. If no format is specified, a text-based PDF is often convenient for preserving layout, but test it. A PDF made from scanned pages may contain images instead of selectable text. Open the file, select a sentence, and paste it into a plain-text editor. If the sentence is missing or scrambled, repair the file before applying.

A simple layout usually tests better than a crowded design. Avoid text boxes for important content, multi-column reading order, icons used instead of words, and charts that contain experience details.

## Use a one-change repair loop

Do not rewrite the entire resume after every scan. Change one category at a time so you know what helped.

1. Scan the original file and save the findings.
2. Fix the largest extraction problem first.
3. Re-scan and record the new findings.
4. Fix missing accurate must-have skills.
5. Re-scan again.
6. Standardize headings, dates, and contact fields.
7. Run the plain-text paste test.
8. Stop when the text paste-back is clean and the job’s must-have skills appear in context.

The stopping rule matters. Endless score chasing can make the resume repetitive or less truthful. The last missing term may be a requirement you do not meet. Leave it out rather than claiming it.

## Ten-item resume scanner fix checklist

Use this list after every scan:

- [ ] Upload the final resume PDF, not an older draft.
- [ ] Paste the complete job description, including requirements and responsibilities.
- [ ] Confirm the name, email, phone, location, and relevant link are extractable.
- [ ] Replace vague section labels with clear headings.
- [ ] Standardize every employment date format.
- [ ] Check that roles appear in reverse chronological order.
- [ ] Add accurate must-have skills to relevant experience or project bullets.
- [ ] Remove unsupported keywords and claims.
- [ ] Paste the PDF into a plain-text editor and fix missing or scrambled text.
- [ ] Change one thing, re-scan, and stop when the paste-back is clean and the must-haves appear in context.

If you want to build a tailored version from profile facts, [sign up for YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv/sign-up). You can keep your existing layout or choose a built-in template, provide a job description or link, and export the resulting CV as a PDF. Its ATS read is against the supplied job, not an employer’s private system.

## Apply-today checklist

Before you submit, verify:

- [ ] The file type follows the employer’s instructions and opens correctly.
- [ ] Main headings are plain, familiar, and easy to extract.
- [ ] The skills section includes only skills you genuinely have.
- [ ] At least five bullets show relevant work, results, tools, or responsibilities.
- [ ] The PDF passes the plain-text paste test.
- [ ] You ran the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) with this job description and fixed the useful findings.

Then apply. Keep the tested copy with the job description so you can explain which version you submitted.

## Questions

### What does a free resume scanner actually check?

A free resume scanner can check how your resume text matches a job description, whether common sections and contact fields are present, how dates appear, and whether the uploaded file can be read. Results vary by tool and do not equal an employer’s Workday or Greenhouse score.

### Is a high resume scanner score a guarantee of an interview?

No. A score is a diagnostic signal from one checker. It does not predict an employer’s decision, prove that an employer uses the same system, or replace relevant experience and clear writing.

### What should I fix first after a resume scan?

Fix unreadable text, missing contact details, unclear section headings, incorrect dates, and missing job requirements that you genuinely have. Then place those skills in relevant work context instead of adding a keyword list.

### Where can I run a resume scanner free?

Use the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) to upload a resume PDF and paste a job description. It reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account.

### Can YourUnique.cv rewrite my resume from a scan?

[YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume or profile facts, an optional LinkedIn URL, and a job description or job link to create a tailored CV. Its paid product also provides an ATS read against that job. It does not give the employer’s own system score.
