Resume Score: Score, Recheck, Repeat Until the Text Pastes Clean

Use a resume score checker to find missing skills, weak formatting, and file problems, then recheck each repair before you apply with confidence.

A resume score can help you find missing keywords, unreadable sections, date problems, and file issues before you apply. Treat it as a diagnostic number, not a hiring prediction. Compare the result with the job description, fix one issue, and scan again.

The final test is simple: copy the resume from the submitted file, paste it into a plain-text editor, and read it from top to bottom. If headings, contact details, dates, and job skills survive in the right order, your file is easier for software and people to review.

What a resume score actually tells you

A checker reads your resume against rules set by that tool. It may compare words with a job description, look for standard headings, inspect dates, detect contact fields, and identify the file type. Some tools also flag long paragraphs, graphics, tables, or missing sections.

The result is useful for finding repair work. It is not a shared rating used by every employer. One checker cannot prove that an employer's applicant tracking system will produce the same result. Do not chase a perfect number or invent a target cutoff.

Use the score to ask better questions:

  • Did I include the job's must-have skills where my experience proves them?
  • Can the checker find my name, email, phone, location, and links?
  • Are my sections named with familiar headings?
  • Can it read my dates and job order?
  • Does the selected file type follow the posting?
  • Does the extracted text make sense when pasted without formatting?

How to run a resume through a checker

1. Save a clean copy

Keep an editable master file. Save a separate version for the target job. Use a plain filename such as Jordan-Lee-Project-Manager.docx or the requested PDF name. Avoid putting sensitive information into an unfamiliar service unless you understand its privacy terms.

2. Add the job description

Paste the complete job post when the checker allows it. Include the responsibilities, qualifications, tools, and certifications. A short keyword list gives a weaker comparison because it removes context.

3. Upload the correct resume file

Use the file you plan to submit. A DOCX and a PDF can produce different extracted text. If the employer asks for a particular format, follow that instruction. Do not scan a printed resume into an image-based PDF.

4. Record the findings

Write down the score and the specific warnings. Capture missing keywords, missing sections, contact errors, date warnings, and file recommendations. Do not repair everything at once. A large batch of edits makes it hard to see what improved or damaged the file.

What typical checkers measure

AreaWhat the checker may inspectWhat you should verify yourselfCommon repair
KeywordsTerms shared by the job post and resumeWhether each term is accurate and used in contextAdd a true skill to a bullet, project, or skills section
SectionsHeadings such as Summary, Experience, Education, and SkillsWhether the information is in the right sectionReplace creative headings with clear standard headings
DatesMonth and year patterns, chronology, missing datesWhether every relevant role has consistent datesUse one format, such as May 2021 to August 2024
Contact fieldsName, email, phone, location, portfolio, LinkedInWhether each field is visible in pasted textPut contact details in the main document body, not only a header or image
File typeDOCX, PDF, or another extensionWhether the file follows the posting and contains selectable textExport a new file and copy its text before submitting
ReadabilityLong blocks, unusual symbols, columns, graphicsWhether the order stays logical after extractionRemove decorative elements and simplify the layout

These checks are signals. They are not proof of how a specific employer's system works. A checker may miss a real problem, flag a harmless choice, or favor wording that does not fit your background.

Read keyword coverage against the job post

Start with the must-haves. Mark each requirement in the job description as one of four types:

  1. Required skill or tool.
  2. Required credential or work authorization.
  3. Core responsibility.
  4. Preferred qualification.

Then search your resume for each term and its accurate equivalent. If the post asks for Salesforce administration, a bullet about maintaining Salesforce workflows is stronger than an isolated Salesforce in a skills list. If you have used the tool only in a project, say so. Do not claim experience you do not have.

Check the surrounding context. A good match usually answers what you did, where you did it, or what changed. For example:

  • Weak: SQL, dashboards, data analysis
  • Better: Used SQL to clean 2 million customer records and built weekly retention dashboards in Power BI.

The second line gives the tool a work setting. It also gives a reviewer evidence to assess.

Do not paste the job description into your resume. Repeated keywords without evidence can make the document difficult to read and may misrepresent your experience.

Repair a scored sample resume

This example uses an invented checker result. The numbers illustrate a before and after in the same tool. They are not employer standards.

Before: score 54

Target role: Operations Analyst

Checker findings:

  • Keywords found: 5 of 11 target terms.
  • Skills section detected: yes.
  • Experience dates: inconsistent.
  • Contact fields: phone detected, email not detected.
  • File: PDF text extraction produced a two-column reading order.

EXPERIENCE
BrightCart, 2022 to Present
Helped improve reporting and supported operations teams.
Worked with data and created dashboards.

EDUCATION
State College

SKILLS
Excel, reporting, dashboards, process improvement

The score is low for identifiable reasons. The email may be in a graphic header. The dates lack months. The bullets do not name the reporting tools or operational results. The two-column PDF may paste in the wrong order.

After: score 82

Repairs made:

  • Moved name and contact details into the document body.
  • Changed the experience date to June 2022 to Present.
  • Added accurate job-post terms to evidence-based bullets.
  • Added a standard Summary section.
  • Rebuilt the two-column PDF as a single-column DOCX.
  • Ran the checker again after the changes.

The higher score does not guarantee an interview. The repair matters because the resume now gives the required skills a clear context. The plain-text order is also easier to inspect.

Use the one-change repair loop

Run this loop instead of rewriting the whole resume after every scan:

  1. Choose the highest-value warning.
  2. Change one item or one small related group.
  3. Save a new version.
  4. Re-scan the exact file you will submit.
  5. Compare the score and the detailed findings.
  6. Copy the file text into a plain-text editor.
  7. Keep the change only if the content remains accurate and readable.

For example, if the tool says project management is missing, first add it to a truthful accomplishment bullet. Recheck. If the score rises but the pasted text now places the bullet under Education, fix the layout instead. A number is not a win when the file becomes harder to read.

Stop when the text pastes clean and the job's must-have skills appear in context. Further edits can add repetition, create new formatting errors, or make the resume less natural.

Ten-item resume score fix checklist

Use this checklist before the final scan:

  • Paste the full job description into the checker.
  • Mark the required skills, tools, credentials, and responsibilities.
  • Add accurate must-have skills to relevant bullets or projects.
  • Use standard headings such as Summary, Experience, Education, and Skills.
  • Put your name, email, phone, location, and relevant links in selectable body text.
  • Give each relevant role a consistent month and year date format.
  • Check that roles appear in reverse chronological order.
  • Remove layout elements that disrupt reading order, including text images and crowded columns.
  • Save the file type requested by the employer and open the saved file.
  • Change one thing, re-scan, then copy the final file into a plain-text editor and check the order.

A free checker can help with this process. Jobscan is useful for comparing a resume with a job description and spotting shared terms. It cannot prove that an employer uses the same scoring rules or that a higher result means a better hiring outcome. Resume Worded can help identify wording and formatting issues, but its feedback is also a separate diagnostic. Use any tool as a second reader, not as an authority.

YourUnique.cv can take a pasted job description and write a resume tailored to that role. Still do the plain-text paste test on the finished file before applying.

Apply-today checklist

Before you press submit, confirm:

  • The file type matches the job post.
  • Headings are clear and standard.
  • Required skills appear accurately in context.
  • At least five bullets show actions and results where possible.
  • The resume passes the plain-text paste test.

Then stop editing and apply.

Questions

What is a good resume score?
There is no universal good resume score or employer cutoff. Use the number to find gaps, then verify that your resume includes the job's required skills in accurate context and passes a plain-text paste test.
Can a resume checker predict whether an employer will reject my resume?
No. A public checker uses its own rules and cannot prove how a specific employer's system will process or rank your resume.
How many times should I recheck my resume?
Recheck after each meaningful repair, especially changes to keywords, headings, dates, contact fields, or file type. Stop when the text pastes clean and the must-have skills are clear.
Should I add every keyword from the job description?
No. Add skills, tools, and job terms that accurately describe your experience. Put them in a work, project, or skills context instead of copying a keyword list.
Is PDF or Word better for an ATS resume?
Use the file type requested in the job post. If no type is stated, a simple DOCX is often a practical choice, but you must follow the employer's instructions and test the extracted text.
