Review resume now by testing the file as an ATS will read it, comparing it with the target job description, and replacing vague claims with proof. The first checks are simple: can the text be extracted, are the main sections easy to find, and do your skills match the job truthfully?
This matters when you apply on a company site or through LinkedIn Easy Apply. The file may be parsed before a recruiter reads it. A polished design cannot fix missing text, unclear headings, or bullets that never explain what you achieved.
A quick way to review your resume now
Use this order. It prevents you from spending an hour changing fonts while missing the job's main requirements.
- Open the PDF and copy all text into a plain-text editor.
- Check that your name, email, dates, job titles, and employers appear in the right order.
- Compare the job description with your summary, skills section, and recent experience.
- Mark keywords you genuinely have, including tools, methods, certifications, and job-specific terms.
- Rewrite weak bullets so they show action, scope, and an outcome.
- Save a clean PDF with a simple file name, then repeat the text check.
The plain-text test is useful because it reveals content that may be hidden in text boxes, columns, graphics, headers, or footers. If a recruiter can see a phrase but copied text cannot, an automated parser may also miss it.
What an ATS-ready review covers
A review is not one score. It is a set of checks across four areas.
| Area | What to inspect | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Parsing | Text order, dates, contact details, section boundaries | Replace text boxes, graphics, tables used for layout, and unusual symbols |
| Keywords | Job title, required tools, methods, certifications, and domain terms | Add accurate terms in the summary, skills, and relevant bullets |
| Format | File type, readable font, headings, spacing, and page flow | Use standard headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, and Education |
| Proof | Results, volume, scope, speed, quality, savings, or customer impact | Add numbers and explain how your work helped |
A checker can flag likely gaps, but it does not prove how an employer's system will score you. Employers use different software and settings. Treat a result as a diagnostic signal, not a hiring prediction.

Worked example: turn a vague bullet into evidence
Imagine the target role asks for customer support, Zendesk, SLA management, reporting, and process improvement. The candidate has done this work but describes it weakly.
Before:
Helped customers and handled support tickets. Used Zendesk and worked with the team to improve processes.
This version has some useful terms, but it lacks scale and evidence. “Helped” hides ownership. “Improved processes” gives no result. The reader cannot tell how much work the candidate handled or whether service levels improved.
After:
Managed 45 to 60 daily customer tickets in Zendesk, maintained a 95% SLA rate, and built weekly issue reports that helped cut repeat requests by 18%.
The revised bullet does four jobs. It names the tool. It uses the relevant service term. It shows workload and performance. It connects reporting to a measurable result.
Do not copy this wording unless it is true for your work. Use the same structure with your own facts:
[Action verb] [work or tool] for [scope], achieved [measurable result], and [business or customer outcome].
A second example shows how to handle a missing phrase without keyword stuffing.
Before:
Created dashboards for managers and shared updates about sales performance.
After:
Built Power BI dashboards tracking pipeline coverage, conversion rate, and revenue by region, giving sales managers a weekly view of forecast risk.
If the job description says “Power BI,” “pipeline,” or “forecasting,” the second bullet gives those terms a truthful home. If you have not used Power BI, do not add it. Use the tool you did use and describe the comparable work accurately.
Fix keywords without stuffing
Start with terms that appear in the requirements or responsibilities. Separate them into groups:
- Must-have skills you already use.
- Tools and platforms you have used.
- Methods, licenses, or certifications you hold.
- Nice-to-have terms that genuinely fit your background.
Place important terms where they make sense. A skills section helps with fast scanning. Experience bullets provide context and proof. The summary can state your target role and strongest relevant area.
Avoid repeating the same phrase in every bullet. It makes the resume harder to read and does not create missing experience. Do not add a long keyword block in white text or tiny type. Hidden content can make the file less trustworthy and may not parse as intended.
Run the PDF through the job description keyword extractor. It lists must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. You can optionally add your resume PDF to see which keywords are already present. Use the output to find gaps, not to invent qualifications.
If you want a draft tailored from your real profile, YourUnique.cv lets you upload a resume, optionally add a LinkedIn URL, and paste a job description or job link. It can keep your layout or use a built-in template, then produce a CV and an ATS read against that job. The draft uses profile facts only.
Format checks before you submit
Keep the design readable under pressure. Use one column when possible, standard section headings, and a font that remains clear after conversion to PDF. Avoid placing essential information in a logo, image, side panel, header, or footer.
Check these details:
- Use a text-based PDF, not a scanned image of a resume.
- Keep dates consistent, such as May 2021 to August 2024.
- Put the employer, title, location, and dates in a clear pattern.
- Use familiar headings: Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, and Certifications.
- Remove decorative icons from phone, email, and social links.
- Open the final PDF on another device and copy the text again.
A table can be fine for a visible skills list, but do not depend on a complex table to control the whole page. Some parsers read columns and cells in an unexpected order. A simple layout gives you fewer surprises.

Review five bullets in detail
Do not try to rewrite every line at once. Pick five bullets from the experience most related to the target role. For each one, ask:
- Does the first phrase show ownership?
- Does it include a relevant tool, method, or deliverable when appropriate?
- Does it show scale, such as users, tickets, revenue, projects, or time?
- Does it state a result or change?
- Could a reader understand the work without internal company jargon?
Replace weak openings such as “responsible for,” “worked on,” and “helped with.” They describe a duty without showing your contribution. Use a precise verb such as managed, automated, audited, analyzed, launched, reduced, trained, or resolved. Choose the verb that matches what you actually did.
Numbers help, but they do not need to be dramatic. Use a count, percentage, time period, budget, team size, response time, error rate, or volume when you have a defensible figure. If you cannot share a confidential number, use a safe scale such as “a 12-person team” or “weekly reporting across five regions.”
Use a checker as a second opinion
Run the file through the ATS resume checker after you have made the manual fixes. Upload the resume PDF and paste the exact job description. Review the match score, missing keywords, and listed gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and not saved to an account.
The result is useful for finding patterns. It cannot reproduce the exact parser, rules, or recruiter workflow used by a particular employer. It also cannot verify whether an achievement is true. Your manual review still controls the final version.
YourUnique.cv is another option when you need a tailored draft rather than a scan alone. Check every generated line against your actual work before exporting the PDF.
Apply-today checklist
Complete this list before you submit:
- Save the final file as a readable PDF with a simple name, such as Firstname-Lastname-Role.pdf.
- Open the PDF and run the plain-text paste test.
- Use standard headings and confirm the section order is clear.
- Match truthful job keywords in the summary, skills, and relevant experience.
- Review five bullets and add scope, tools, and results where available.
- Run the file through the ATS resume checker with the exact job description.
- Remove any keyword, title, tool, or result that you cannot support.
- Submit the version tailored to this job, not a generic file used for every application.
Questions
- What should I check first when I review my resume now?
- Check the file type, text extraction, section headings, and contact details first. Then compare the resume with the job description and fix missing truthful keywords.
- Can an ATS score tell me whether I will get an interview?
- No. A checker can identify possible parsing, keyword, and content gaps, but it cannot predict an employer's decision or reproduce the exact system used by a company.
- Should I add every keyword from the job description?
- No. Add a keyword only when it accurately describes your experience, tools, training, or results. Do not claim experience you do not have.
- How can I review my resume with a free tool?
- Upload your resume PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). It reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The result is not a Workday or Greenhouse number, and the PDF is scanned for the result rather than saved to an account.
- Can YourUnique.cv help me prepare a tailored resume?
- Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume or optional LinkedIn URL and a job description to draft a CV from your profile facts, then provide an ATS read against that job.
