A free resume scan gives you a useful pre-application check: which job terms appear, whether key sections are present, and whether the file produces readable text. It does not predict an employer's exact ATS result. Use the scan to find repair work, not to chase a magic number.
The best process is simple. Upload the resume, paste the job description, inspect the results, change one thing, scan again, and stop when the text pastes cleanly and the job's must-have skills appear in honest context.
What a free resume scan can tell you
A checker compares your resume with a job description and inspects the file. The exact report depends on the tool, but most useful checks fall into four areas.
| Check | What to inspect | What to repair |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Job-specific skills, tools, certifications, methods, and titles | Add accurate terms where your experience supports them |
| Sections | Contact details, summary, experience, education, and skills | Use conventional headings and make each section easy to identify |
| Dates | Month and year, consistent order, readable employment periods | Use one format throughout, such as Jan 2022 to Mar 2024 |
| File type | PDF or DOCX requirements and extracted text | Follow the posting, then copy and paste the file into a plain-text editor |
A checker may also flag missing skills, unclear job titles, or a weak match between your recent work and the posting. Treat these as questions to investigate. A result is not proof that an employer's system will produce the same score. Employers use different systems, settings, workflows, and human review.
If you want more background on the process, see Resume Checker Online Free: Score, Recheck, Repeat Until the Text Pastes Clean and ATS Checker Free: Score, Recheck, Repeat Until the Text Pastes Clean.
Run the first scan
Start with the version you would actually submit. Do not scan an empty template or a resume filled with guessed keywords.
- Save the resume as a PDF unless the job post requests another format.
- Copy the complete job description, including requirements and preferred qualifications.
- Upload the resume and paste the job description into a free checker.
- Record the score and the report's specific findings.
- Open the extracted or copied text and compare it with the original file.
For a practical first pass, use the ATS resume checker. It accepts a resume PDF and job description, then reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account. The result is a diagnostic read, not a Workday or Greenhouse number.
If you want a draft based on your real profile facts, you can paste the same job into YourUnique.cv after the scan. Keep the plain-text paste test. A generated resume still needs your review.
Read the score without chasing it
The score tells you that the checker found more or fewer overlaps between the file and the job post. It does not tell you that the resume is truthful, persuasive, or ready to submit.
Use the report in this order:
1. Check must-have skills
Look for required tools, certifications, methods, languages, and years of experience. A missing must-have term deserves attention before a missing preferred term.
Confirm that the term is truly missing. It may appear under a synonym. For example, a job may say “customer relationship management,” while your resume says “CRM.” If the longer phrase is accurate and useful, write both once in a natural place.
Do not add a skill only because the checker requests it. If you have not used Kubernetes, do not add Kubernetes. A lower score is safer than a false claim.
2. Check context
A keyword in a skills list is weaker than a keyword supported by a work example. Put important terms in a bullet that explains the action and result.
Before:
Managed reporting and supported business users.
After, if accurate:
Built weekly Power BI reporting for 12 regional managers, reducing manual spreadsheet preparation by 6 hours per week.
The second bullet gives the tool, task, audience, and result. It also gives a reviewer a reason to believe the skill.
3. Check missing sections
Most resumes need clearly labeled sections such as Summary, Experience, Skills, and Education. Add Certifications or Projects when they matter to the role.
Avoid decorative labels that hide standard sections. “My journey” may look friendly, but “Professional Experience” is easier for software and people to recognize.
4. Check dates
Use a consistent date format. Do not mix 03/22, March 2022, and 2022 without a reason. Month and year usually provide enough detail for a resume.
Make sure each role has a start and end date, or a clear “Present” label. Check that dates do not disappear because they sit inside a header, footer, image, or text box.
5. Check contact fields
Your name, email, phone, city and state or country, and a relevant portfolio or LinkedIn URL should be easy to find. Do not put essential contact information in an image or a decorative header that fails during extraction.
A scored sample: before and after
The numbers below are illustrative. They show how to use a report, not a required score or employer cutoff.
| Version | Sample scan result | Report | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before | 61/100 | Missing Power BI and stakeholder management. Experience section partly extracted. Dates inconsistent. | Repair the affected bullets, headings, dates, and layout. |
| After | 84/100 | Must-have terms appear in context. Sections and dates extract cleanly. One preferred certification remains absent. | Recheck the certification. Add it only if you hold it. |
The improvement matters because the content became clearer and more relevant. The number alone does not prove that the second resume will pass an employer's process.
For the first version, the repair might look like this:
Before:
Created reports and worked with stakeholders to support decisions.
After:
Built Power BI dashboards for finance and operations stakeholders, helping managers review weekly cost and staffing trends.
The after version uses the job's language in context. It does not stuff the same term into every section.
Use the repair loop
Make one meaningful change at a time. If you change the summary, skills list, layout, and file type together, you will not know which repair fixed the issue.
Follow this loop:
- Pick the highest-value gap, usually a missing must-have skill or unreadable section.
- Edit the resume truthfully.
- Export it in the required file type.
- Run the same job description through the same checker.
- Compare the new score and the detailed report.
- Copy all extracted text into a plain-text editor.
- Stop when the text is in the right order, key sections appear, and must-have skills are supported by real examples.
A higher score is not a reason to keep editing forever. Stop when the report has no important factual gaps, the file reads correctly, and the resume remains concise.
Common problems a scan exposes
Columns and text boxes
A two-column layout may extract left-to-right, top-to-bottom, or in a mixed order. Test it. If the experience bullets appear between contact details and education, simplify the layout.
Icons instead of labels
A phone icon may not extract as a phone field. Write the label or use plain contact text. The same applies to mail, location, and web icons.
Headers and footers
Important information in a header or footer can be missed or moved. Keep the name and contact fields in the document body when possible.
Keyword lists with no evidence
A long skills block cannot replace work examples. Keep the list accurate, then prove the most relevant skills in recent bullets.
Graphics and charts
A logo, rating bar, or image may look clear to a person and produce no useful text. Remove decorative graphics that carry resume content.
Wrong file type
A posting may ask for DOCX, PDF, or an application form. Follow the instruction. If it says PDF, test the PDF. If it says DOCX, test the DOCX. Do not assume that one export behaves like another.
Ten-item fix and recheck checklist
Use this list before the final scan:
- Paste the complete job description into the checker.
- Confirm the resume uses the requested file type.
- Check that your name, email, phone, and location are readable.
- Use standard headings for Summary, Experience, Skills, and Education.
- Make sure every role has consistent month and year dates.
- Compare the must-have skills with your actual background.
- Put important skills into relevant experience bullets when accurate.
- Remove graphics, icons, and text boxes that hide essential text.
- Copy the exported file into a plain-text editor and inspect the order.
- Re-scan after the repair, then stop when the text paste-back is clean.
After your resume is ready, YourUnique.cv can tailor a CV from your profile facts and a specific job description, then provide an ATS read against that job. You can also browse templates if your current layout causes extraction problems. The diagnostic still is not the employer's ATS result.
Once the resume is ready, open Job Radar to find live public ATS career-page postings that fit the same profile. It is a job-finding step after the resume check, not a replacement for testing the file.
Apply today checklist
- Save the final resume in the file type named by the job post.
- Confirm standard headings and readable contact fields.
- Match the job's accurate must-have skills.
- Review at least five relevant experience bullets for clear actions and results.
- Copy the exported file into plain text and verify the order.
- Run the ATS resume checker one last time.
- Read the report, fix only truthful gaps, and submit the clean file.
Questions
- How can I scan my resume for free?
- Upload your resume PDF and paste the target job description into a free ATS resume checker. Review the match score, missing keywords, section gaps, and extracted text. Then edit and run the scan again.
- What is a good ATS resume score?
- There is no universal employer ATS score cutoff. A checker score is a diagnostic signal, not the number used by every employer. Focus on accurate must-have skills, clear sections, readable dates, and clean text extraction.
- Should I add every keyword a checker suggests?
- No. Add a keyword only when it accurately describes your experience, tools, education, or qualifications. Do not claim skills or experience you do not have.
- What file type should I use for an ATS resume?
- Use the file type requested in the job post. If the post does not specify one, a text-readable PDF is often practical, but verify that copied text appears in the correct order. A DOCX file can also be appropriate when requested.
- Can YourUnique.cv help me check a tailored resume?
- Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your profile facts and a job description to draft a tailored CV, then provide an ATS read against that job. Its score is a product diagnostic, not the employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other ATS score. After the resume is ready, [Job Radar](https://yourunique.cv/job-radar) can help find live public ATS postings that fit the same profile.
