Scan your resume online before you submit it. Use the result to find missing job terms, weak section labels, inconsistent dates, contact field problems, and file issues. Do not treat the score as a hiring decision.

A good repair loop is simple: scan the resume with the target job description, fix one issue, scan again, and stop when the text paste-back is clean and the job's must-have skills appear in honest context.

## What an online resume scan can tell you

A checker compares your file with a job description and tests whether important information is visible and readable. Different tools use different rules. One may reward exact phrases. Another may focus more on section structure or document parsing.

The number is a diagnostic signal. It is not a universal grade, an employer's Workday result, or an acceptance threshold. Do not reject a strong application because one tool gives it a lower number. Do not submit a weak, inaccurate resume because a tool gives it a high number.

These are the areas worth inspecting:

| Area | What a checker may measure | What you should inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Words and phrases shared with the job description | Whether you use relevant terms you actually know, with evidence nearby |
| Sections | Presence of headings such as Summary, Experience, Education, and Skills | Whether headings are clear and the content sits under the right heading |
| Dates | Whether employment dates are recognizable and consistent | Month and year format, order, and gaps that need explanation |
| Contact fields | Whether your name, email, phone, location, and links can be read | Plain text contact details near the top of the file |
| File type | Whether the uploaded file can be opened and parsed | PDF or another format requested by the employer, with selectable text |

A checker may also report gaps. A gap can mean a missing skill, a missing resume section, or text that the tool could not read. Read the finding before changing anything.

## How to scan your resume online

### 1. Start with the exact job description

Do not scan a general resume against a vague role. Copy the complete job post into the checker. Include the responsibilities, required qualifications, preferred qualifications, tools, certifications, and job title.

If the post is long, keep the relevant text together. Removing the requirements can make the results less useful.

### 2. Upload the file you plan to submit

Use the final PDF, not a Word file that you later replace. Check that you can select and copy the text. A PDF made from an image may look fine to you but contain no readable text for a parser.

Keep the original file in case a repair damages spacing or removes a link. If the employer requests a DOCX file, test that file too. Follow the employer's instructions over a general checker recommendation.

### 3. Review the score and the evidence

Record the score, then ignore it for a moment. Read the missing keywords, gaps, and extracted text. Ask four questions:

- Are the must-have skills present somewhere in the resume?
- Are they written using language that matches the job post, where truthful?
- Can the checker find the sections and dates?
- Does the extracted text follow the same order as the visible resume?

The evidence matters more than the headline number.

For a no-account test, use the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). Upload a resume PDF and paste the job description. It returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account. This is a useful check of your file and its relationship to one job. It is not the same system or score an employer uses.

If you want a draft tailored to the job from your actual profile facts, you can also paste the same job into [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv). It can keep your current layout or use a built-in template, then produce a PDF and an ATS read against that job. Review the output for accuracy. Do the plain-text test yourself.

## Read a score without chasing vanity numbers

Suppose a checker gives the following illustrative results. These figures are examples, not universal targets.

| Version | Reported result | What the resume contained | Repair decision |
|---|---:|---|---|
| Before | 61/100 | “Reporting,” “data,” and “teamwork,” but no clear SQL, dashboard, or stakeholder examples | Inspect the job post and add truthful detail in experience bullets |
| After | 82/100 | SQL appears in a project bullet, dashboard work appears under experience, and stakeholder communication has evidence | Keep checking parsing, dates, and file output instead of adding more terms |

The second version is not automatically better for every employer. It is better because the missing terms are supported by real work. If you have never used SQL, do not add it to raise a number. A keyword without evidence can hurt your credibility in an interview.

A high score can also hide problems. The resume may contain many matching words but fail to explain what you did, how you did it, or what changed. A low score may reflect a synonym, a short job description, or a parser that missed a column. Use the result to decide what to inspect, not what to claim.

## Repair the resume in the right order

### Fix keywords in context

Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. Put a skill in the Summary only if it is accurate, then prove it in Experience, Projects, or Certifications. Use the job post's normal wording when it accurately describes your experience.

For example:

Before: “Created reports for managers.”

After: “Built weekly SQL reports and Power BI dashboards for operations managers, reducing manual spreadsheet work by 6 hours per week.”

The after version contains tools, an activity, an audience, and an outcome. Use real figures only. If you cannot quantify the result, describe the output or scope without inventing a number.

### Repair missing sections

Use familiar headings. “Professional Experience,” “Education,” “Skills,” “Certifications,” and “Projects” are easy for people and parsers to identify. Avoid putting all content in a graphic sidebar. A creative heading may be readable to a person but still confuse a basic parser.

If a checker says Education is missing, confirm that the heading exists as selectable text. If you have no certifications, you do not need to create an empty section.

### Standardize date formats

Choose one format and use it everywhere. For example, use `Jan 2022 to Mar 2024` for every role, or use `01/2022 to 03/2024` for every role. Do not mix a full month and year with a year-only entry unless there is a clear reason.

Place dates near each job title and employer. Avoid putting dates inside images, headers, or decorative shapes. Check that roles appear in reverse chronological order.

### Check contact fields and file type

Put your name, phone number, professional email, city and region, and relevant portfolio or LinkedIn URL in readable text near the top. Do not put essential contact details only in a header or footer.

Use the file type requested by the employer. When PDF is allowed, open the PDF, select all text, paste it into a plain-text editor, and inspect the result. Look for missing words, scrambled columns, repeated headers, strange symbols, and broken URLs.

## The repair loop

Change one thing at a time. If you add five keywords, replace a two-column layout, and rewrite the Summary, you will not know which change fixed the problem.

Use this loop:

1. Save a copy of the current resume.
2. Change one issue, such as a section heading or one experience bullet.
3. Export the exact file you plan to send.
4. Scan it against the same job description.
5. Read the extracted text, not only the score.
6. Keep the change if it improves accuracy and parsing.
7. Remove it if it adds an unsupported claim or creates a formatting problem.
8. Stop when the must-have skills appear in context and the text paste-back is clean.

The stop point matters. Continued editing can make a resume longer, repetitive, or less readable. A clear two-page resume with supported evidence is more useful than a keyword-heavy file that reads poorly.

Near the final pass, [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv/sign-up) can help tailor a CV from your existing resume or LinkedIn profile and a specific job description. It uses profile facts for the draft, but you remain responsible for checking every detail.

- [ ] Confirm the main headings are clear and consistent.
- [ ] Confirm relevant skills appear truthfully in context.
- [ ] Review at least five experience bullets for specific actions and outcomes.

## Questions

### What does it mean to scan a resume online?

It means uploading your resume to a resume checker, adding a target job description, and reviewing possible issues with keywords, sections, dates, contact details, and file parsing.

### Is an online resume score the same as an employer ATS score?

No. An online score is feedback from that tool's own rules and comparison method. It cannot prove what an employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other hiring system will produce.

### What should I fix after I scan my resume online?

Fix missing job-related terms you genuinely have, unclear section headings, inconsistent dates, missing contact fields, and file formatting that disappears when the document is copied into plain text.

### Which Free Tool can I use to scan a resume against a job description?

Use the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). Upload a resume PDF and paste the job description to see a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The result is not an employer ATS number.

### Can [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) rewrite my resume from a job description?

Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume or LinkedIn URL, your profile facts, and a job description or link to create a tailored CV, then provide an ATS read against that job. Review every claim before applying.
