If you want an ats score free, start by comparing your actual PDF with the exact job description. Use the result to find missing job terms, broken text, weak sections, date problems, and file issues. Do not treat the score as a hiring cutoff.

The useful finish line is practical: the job's must-have skills appear in context, your resume sections parse in the right order, and the file survives a plain-text paste test.

Run a free ATS test

Use the ATS resume checker to upload your resume PDF and paste the job description. It returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account.

Before you run the test, use the same version of the resume you plan to submit. Paste the full job description, not a short summary. If the job has a location, clearance, license, language, or work authorization requirement, keep that text in the job description. Those details can affect what the checker identifies as a gap.

A public checker does not reproduce the employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other ATS setup. It cannot prove how an employer will rank your application. It gives you a controlled comparison between one file and one job post.

If you want another view of this process, see ATS Score Check Free: How to Test, Read the Score, and Fix What Matters and Free ATS Resume Scanner: How to Test, Read the Score, and Fix What Matters.

What the score usually measures

The number is less useful than the evidence behind it. Checkers commonly inspect these areas:

AreaWhat the checker may inspectWhat you should verify
KeywordsWords and phrases shared with the job descriptionMust-have skills appear accurately and in a relevant section
SectionsContact details, summary, experience, education, and skillsStandard headings are present and easy to identify
DatesStart and end dates, month and year patterns, current role wordingEvery role has a consistent, readable date format
File typeWhether the uploaded PDF contains selectable, readable textThe PDF is text-based, not a screenshot or image-only file
Text orderWhether columns, boxes, headers, and footers extract sensiblyThe pasted text follows the intended reading order
Contact fieldsName, email, phone, location, and linksKey details are real text, not icons or graphic elements

The exact checks vary by tool. Read the detailed findings instead of assuming every point has equal weight.

How to read the score without chasing it

A high score can still hide a serious problem. For example, a resume may repeat “project management” several times while omitting the tools, outcomes, or seniority the job requires. A lower score may result from a harmless wording difference, such as “customer support” versus “customer service.”

Read the report in this order:

  1. Find the job's must-have skills.
  2. Separate true gaps from wording gaps.
  3. Check whether each matching term appears in context.
  4. Review section and parsing warnings.
  5. Check dates and contact fields.
  6. Confirm the file type and text order.

Do not add a keyword for a skill you do not have. Do not copy a requirement into a skills list without evidence. The fix is usually to describe real work more clearly, not to make unsupported claims.

A checker may also mark a term as missing when you used an abbreviation, an alternate spelling, or a related phrase. Decide whether the job's exact wording is a fair description of your experience. If it is, use the clearer term once in a bullet or skills line. If it is not, leave it out.

A scored sample: before and after

Consider a customer success manager applying for a role that asks for Salesforce, renewal management, onboarding, churn reduction, and quarterly business reviews.

The sample score below is illustrative. It is not an employer score or a universal pass mark.

VersionReportWhat it means
Before61/100The resume mentions customer support and Salesforce, but has no clear renewal work, onboarding ownership, or churn result. The PDF also uses a two-column layout that changes the text order.
After86/100The resume uses standard headings, consistent dates, a text-based PDF, and accurate bullets that connect the role to onboarding, renewals, churn, and business reviews.

Before:

Managed customer accounts and helped with support. Used Salesforce to track requests. Worked with teams to improve service.

After:

Managed 42 B2B accounts in Salesforce, leading onboarding and quarterly business reviews for customers with annual renewals.

Reduced customer churn by 14% in one year by introducing renewal-risk reviews and follow-up plans.

The second version does more than repeat keywords. It gives the terms a setting, action, scope, and result. Only use these details if they are true. If you do not know an exact percentage, state the work without inventing a number.

Fix the resume in a repair loop

Run one change at a time. Save a new version after each meaningful change, then re-scan it against the same job description. This tells you which change affected the result and prevents random editing.

Start with missing must-haves. Add an accurate term to the bullet where you performed that work, or add it to a focused skills section if the job post treats it as a tool or qualification. Next, repair section headings and dates. Then check the file itself.

Use this loop:

  1. Run the original PDF.
  2. Record the score and detailed gaps.
  3. Pick the highest-value accurate fix.
  4. Edit one section or a small group of related lines.
  5. Export a fresh PDF.
  6. Re-scan against the same job description.
  7. Compare the new gaps, not only the score.
  8. Stop when the must-have skills appear in context and the pasted text is clean.

Run the plain-text test before you stop. Open the PDF, select all text, and paste it into a plain text editor. Check that your name and contact details appear first, headings are readable, bullets stay with the right job, and dates have not moved into the wrong section. If the text is scrambled, fix the layout even if the score rose.

Run the file through the ATS resume checker, then paste the same job into YourUnique.cv if you want a draft built from your real profile facts. Still perform the plain-text paste test. A generated draft does not remove the need to verify every claim.

Common repairs that matter

Use standard headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, and Certifications. A creative heading may look clear to you but give a parser less information.

Keep contact information in the main document body when possible. Do not rely on a phone icon, a text box, or a header that disappears during extraction. Use a complete email address, phone number, city and state or country when relevant, and a working professional profile link.

Use one date style throughout. For example, use “Jan 2022 to Mar 2024” for every completed role and “Apr 2024 to Present” for a current role. Do not mix “01/22,” “January 2022,” and “2022 to Present” without a reason.

Use a text-based PDF unless the employer gives different instructions. A scanned image of a resume may look perfect but produce little or no usable text. Avoid complex tables, floating text boxes, decorative icons, and multi-column layouts when they disrupt the reading order.

Do not make a skill list carry the whole application. Put important skills inside experience bullets where you can prove how you used them. A tools line can help with coverage, but context supports credibility.

Ten-item ATS fix checklist

Use the Free Tools page for the checker and related resume tests. Then complete every item below.

  • Upload the exact PDF version you plan to submit.
  • Paste the complete, current job description.
  • Record the initial score and the listed gaps.
  • Mark the job's must-have skills and remove any you do not actually have from your edit plan.
  • Add accurate matching terms to relevant experience bullets or a focused skills section.
  • Confirm Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, and other needed headings are clear.
  • Check that contact fields are selectable text and complete.
  • Standardize role dates, including the current-role label.
  • Confirm the PDF has selectable text and a sensible paste order.
  • Change one thing, export, and re-scan until the text paste-back is clean and the must-have skills appear in context.

You do not need to keep editing until a number stops moving. Stop when further changes would add repetition, weaken readability, or make a truthful resume less natural.

Once your resume is ready, YourUnique.cv can tailor a CV from your profile facts and a specific job description, with a separate ATS read for that job. You can also open Job Radar to find live ATS career-page postings that fit the same profile.

Questions

Can I get an ATS score free?
Yes. You can upload a resume PDF and paste a job description into a free ATS checker to see a match score, missing keywords, and content gaps. The result is a diagnostic, not an employer's Workday or Greenhouse score.
What is a good ATS score?
There is no universal employer cutoff or guaranteed safe score. Use the number to find missing must-have skills, weak context, missing sections, and parsing problems. A readable resume with accurate evidence matters more than chasing a high score.
What should I fix when my ATS score is low?
Start with job-specific must-have skills that you genuinely have, then place them in the right experience or skills context. Check headings, dates, contact fields, file type, and text order before changing visual design.
Does a free ATS checker prove an employer will read my resume?
No. A checker can scan your file against a pasted job description, but it cannot reproduce every employer system, configuration, recruiter decision, or hiring process. It helps you find preventable issues.
Can YourUnique.cv help after an ATS check?
[YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can create a tailored CV from your profile facts and the job description, then provide an ATS read against that job. Its score is also a diagnostic, not the employer's ATS number. After the resume is ready, [Job Radar](https://yourunique.cv/job-radar) can find live ATS career-page roles that fit the same profile.
