ATS Test: A Fix List You Can Finish Today
Run an ATS test today with this repair list. Fix file type, headings, keywords, bullets, and plain-text parsing before you submit your resume.

An ATS test is a quick repair process. Check the file, remove layout obstacles, match one job description, and confirm that the text survives a plain-text paste. Finish these steps before you submit through a company site or LinkedIn Easy Apply.
Do not chase a magic score. Applicant tracking systems differ, and a public checker cannot prove what a particular employer's system will do. Your goal is simpler: make the resume readable, relevant, and supported by your actual experience.
The repair sequence
Work through these steps in order. Save a new version after each major change.
1. Check the requested file type
Read the application instructions first. Use PDF, DOCX, or another format only when the employer asks for it. If no format is specified, choose a standard file that contains selectable text and does not depend on images.
Open the saved file on a second device or in a different viewer. Confirm that the text is selectable. If you cannot select the words, the resume may be an image rather than readable text.
Use a clear filename such as Jordan-Lee-Project-Manager-Resume.pdf. Avoid resume-final-final2.pdf, special symbols, and very long filenames.
2. Remove columns, text boxes, and tables
A two-column design can look neat but read in the wrong order. Text boxes, sidebars, icons, charts, and tables can also split information or hide it from a parser.
Use one vertical column. Put contact details in the document body, not only in a header or footer. Remove profile photos, logos, decorative lines, rating bars, and graphics unless the application specifically calls for a visual portfolio.
For more layout guidance, see ATS-Friendly: A Fix List You Can Finish Today. The same repair principle applies here: remove visual features that carry meaning only through position or design.
3. Rename vague headings
Use familiar section names. A parser can identify Professional Experience more reliably than My Journey.
| Resume section | Use this heading | Avoid this heading |
|---|---|---|
| Introductory summary | Professional Summary | About Me |
| Work history | Professional Experience | My Journey |
| Capabilities | Skills | What I Do |
| Education | Education | Learning Path |
| Credentials | Certifications | Badges and Wins |
| Extra information | Projects or Volunteer Experience | Other Things |
Keep headings as plain text. Do not place the heading in an image. Use consistent dates, such as May 2021 to March 2024, and make the employer, title, and dates easy to identify.
4. Add a focused skills block
Place a Skills section near the top, after your summary or contact details. Use text that reflects the job and your background.
Example:
Skills: vendor management, Jira, Scrum, process improvement, risk reporting, stakeholder communication
Do not hide skills inside a graphic. Do not copy every phrase from a job description. A skills block supports the experience section. It does not replace proof in your bullets.
5. Run one keyword pass against one job
Open the job description beside your resume. Pull out 8 to 12 terms that matter for this role. Include a mix of:
- Required skills and methods
- Tools or platforms
- Role-specific responsibilities
- Relevant certifications or domain terms
Record the exact wording where it is truthful. A job may say customer success, while your resume says client retention. Use both when both accurately describe your work.
| Job description term | Where to place it | Evidence to check |
|---|---|---|
| Salesforce | Skills and relevant bullet | You used Salesforce in the role |
| Forecasting | Experience bullet | You prepared or owned forecasts |
| Customer retention | Summary or bullet | Your work affected retention |
| Cross-functional | Experience bullet | You worked across named teams |
Do not add a tool because it appears in the posting if you have never used it. Do not claim a certification you do not hold. Tailoring means making relevant facts easy to find.
Run the job description keyword extractor to separate must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. You can paste your resume PDF too, which marks terms already present in the file. Then paste the same job into YourUnique.cv if you want a draft built from your real profile facts. Still complete the manual checks below.
6. Rewrite five bullets with numbers
Choose five bullets that relate directly to the target job. Replace duty-only wording with an action, the work, and a measurable result.
Before:
Responsible for managing weekly reports for the sales team.
After:
Automated weekly sales reporting in Excel, cutting preparation time from four hours to 45 minutes for a 12-person team.
Before:
Helped improve the onboarding process.
After:
Rebuilt the customer onboarding checklist and email sequence, reducing average setup time by 20%.
Before:
Worked with engineering and product on releases.
After:
Coordinated release readiness across product, engineering, and support for 18 quarterly launches.
Before:
Managed customer issues and requests.
After:
Resolved 40 to 55 customer cases per week while maintaining a 96% satisfaction rating.
Before:
Created marketing content for campaigns.
After:
Wrote landing pages and email copy for six campaigns that generated 1,800 qualified leads.
Use real numbers only. If you cannot share an exact figure, use a defensible range, volume, time period, team size, or scope. Never invent an outcome to make a bullet look stronger.
Run the parsing test
This is the fastest way to catch a broken reading order.
- Open the final resume.
- Select all text.
- Copy it.
- Paste it into a plain-text box, such as a basic text editor.
- Read from the first line to the last.
Check whether the result follows a sensible order. Your name should appear before your summary. Each job should keep its title, employer, dates, and bullets together. Section headings should remain visible. Contact information should not appear in the middle of a job.
Look for these failures:
- Missing text
- Repeated text
- Bullets joined into one paragraph
- Dates separated from employers
- Characters changed into empty boxes
- Columns read from bottom to top
- Header or footer content placed in the wrong section
If the paste is hard to read, return to a one-column document. Replace unusual symbols with standard bullet characters. Re-export the file, then repeat the test. Do not assume that a visually correct PDF will parse correctly.
A resume checker can add another signal. The ATS resume checker scans an uploaded resume PDF and pasted job description, then reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account. Treat that output as a diagnostic, not as the number an employer's Workday or Greenhouse system will assign.
Check the result before applying
Review the file in this order:
Content
Does the resume answer the job's main requirements? Are the 8 to 12 selected terms supported by real work? Do the five revised bullets contain useful scope or results?
Structure
Can a reader identify your name, contact details, experience, skills, education, and certifications without hunting? Are your most relevant achievements near the top of each role?
Formatting
Is the file one column? Is the text selectable? Are headings consistent? Did the export create blank pages, clipped text, or strange characters?
Accuracy
Do dates match your records? Are tool names and certifications correct? Does every number have a source you can explain in an interview?

The final 12-point ATS test checklist
Use this list on the exact file you will upload.
- I followed the employer's requested file type.
- The filename includes my name and target role.
- The text is selectable, not a screenshot.
- The resume uses one clear column.
- I removed tables, text boxes, graphics, and decorative icons.
- Contact details are in the document body.
- Headings use standard names such as Skills and Professional Experience.
- I added a truthful skills block near the top.
- I matched 8 to 12 relevant terms from this specific job.
- I rewrote five relevant bullets with accurate numbers or scope.
- I pasted the file into a plain-text box and checked the reading order.
- I reviewed the final file for accuracy before uploading it.

Apply today
Before you click submit, confirm the file, headings, skills block, five revised bullets, and plain-text paste test. Then upload that tested version to the company site or LinkedIn Easy Apply. If you make another edit, repeat the paste test. A small formatting change can alter the extracted text.
You can also review ATS-friendly templates from YourUnique.cv when rebuilding the document. Keep the design simple, tailor it to the job, and apply with the exact version you checked.
Questions
- What is an ATS test?
- An ATS test checks whether a resume file can be read as text and whether it contains relevant terms from a specific job description. It cannot predict an employer's exact screening result.
- Should I use PDF or DOCX for an ATS resume?
- Use the file type requested by the application portal. If no type is specified, a clean DOCX is often a practical choice, but you should test the final file and follow the employer's instructions.
- How many keywords should I add to my resume?
- Select about 8 to 12 relevant terms from one job description, then place each where your real experience supports it. Do not add skills or tools you do not have.
- Where can I run an ATS test for free?
- Upload your resume PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). It reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. Its result is not a Workday or Greenhouse number.
- Can YourUnique.cv rewrite my resume for a job?
- [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your uploaded resume, optional LinkedIn URL, and a job description or job link to create a CV from your profile facts, then provide an ATS read against that job. You still need to review the claims and file.
