Best ATS Reddit advice usually comes down to a clean file, simple structure, truthful keywords, and a quick text-order test. Do this before you apply. You do not need to copy a random Reddit template or chase a score from a public checker.
Your repair target is simple: make the file easy to read, make the required information easy to find, and tailor it to one job. Use the sequence below today.
1. Save the resume in the right file type
Read the application instructions first. If the employer asks for DOCX, upload DOCX. If it asks for PDF, upload PDF. If it gives no direction, use a clean DOCX or a text-based PDF.
Avoid these files:
- Scanned PDFs made from a paper document
- Image-only resumes
- Password-protected files
- Files with unusual extensions
- PDFs exported from design software that turns text into shapes
Open your final file and try to select a sentence. If you cannot select individual words, the file may be an image rather than readable text.
Use a short filename such as Alex-Patel-Resume.pdf. Do not use a filename such as resume-final-final-2.pdf. The filename will not repair a bad parse, but a clear name reduces confusion when you upload several documents.
For more detail on file structure, read ATS Compatible Resume: From Upload Fail to a Clean Parse.
2. Remove columns, tables, and floating text
A one-column resume gives the parser one clear path from top to bottom. Columns can cause the system to read the right side before the left side. Tables can split a job title, date, or skill into separate cells.
Remove or rebuild these elements:
- Two-column layouts
- Text boxes
- Tables used for work history
- Sidebars with contact details
- Headers and footers that contain key information
- Icons used instead of words
- Decorative lines made from unusual symbols
Keep design simple. Use normal margins, a readable font, and consistent spacing. A plain layout is easier to repair than a visual layout built from many separate objects.

3. Rename headings so the parser recognizes them
Use familiar section names. Do not make the reader guess what a section means.
| Resume content | Safer heading | Riskier heading |
|---|---|---|
| Work history | Experience or Professional Experience | Where I Made an Impact |
| Education | Education | Academic Story |
| Skills and tools | Skills or Technical Skills | My Toolkit |
| Introduction | Summary or Professional Summary | About Me |
| Certifications | Certifications | Proof I Know My Work |
Put your name and contact details near the top in normal text. Include city and state or country if relevant. Add a phone number, professional email, and LinkedIn URL if you use one.
Do not bury your title in a graphic. Write it as text below your name, such as Customer Success Manager or Data Analyst.
4. Add a visible skills block
Place a Skills section near the top third of the resume, after the summary or before Experience. Use plain text and group related terms only when that improves scanning.
Example:
Skills: SQL, Excel, Salesforce, customer onboarding, data analysis, account management, churn reduction, dashboard reporting
A skills block does not replace evidence in your work history. It gives the parser a clear place to find tools and capabilities. Repeat a relevant skill in a bullet when you used it in that role.
Do not add a tool because it appears in the job description. If you have not used it, leave it out. You can use related experience only when the wording is accurate.
5. Pull 8 to 12 truthful keywords from one job
Do not tailor against five job descriptions at once. Choose the job you are applying for now.
Read the posting and mark four types of terms:
- Required skills, such as stakeholder management or financial modeling.
- Tools, such as Salesforce, Jira, Python, or Excel.
- Work outputs, such as forecasts, dashboards, audits, or project plans.
- Role language, such as customer retention, quality assurance, or vendor management.
Select 8 to 12 terms that match your real background. Use the employer's wording where it is accurate. For example, if your resume says “client renewals” and the posting says “customer retention,” you may use both when your work covered retention.
Run the job through the job description keyword extractor. It lists must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. You can also upload your resume PDF to see which terms already appear in the file. The tool helps identify words. It cannot decide whether you truly have the skill.
After the keyword pass, paste terms into the right places:
- Put tools and capabilities in Skills.
- Put methods and outputs in Experience bullets.
- Put the target role or specialization in the Summary when accurate.
- Keep certifications in Certifications, not in a keyword block.
At this point, you can paste the same job into YourUnique.cv if you want a draft based on your real profile. The paid product can read your profile facts, preserve your layout or use a built-in template, and provide an ATS read against that job. It does not turn missing experience into real experience.
6. Rewrite five bullets with numbers
Pick five bullets that relate directly to the job. Rewrite them with a clear action, the work performed, and a measured result when you have one.
| Weak bullet | Repaired bullet |
|---|---|
| Responsible for managing customer accounts | Managed 42 customer accounts and raised renewal revenue by 18% in one year |
| Helped with monthly reporting | Built monthly Excel reports used by 6 department leads, cutting manual preparation by 5 hours per week |
| Worked on a website redesign | Coordinated a 4-person redesign project that reduced checkout errors by 22% |
| Handled support tickets | Resolved 55 to 70 support tickets per week while maintaining a 96% first-response target |
| Assisted with hiring | Scheduled interviews for 35 candidates and reduced average time to interview from 10 days to 6 |
Do not invent numbers. Use counts, percentages, time saved, revenue, volume, scope, or team size only when you can support them. If you cannot measure the result, describe the output and scope plainly.
A useful bullet pattern is:
Action verb + task or method + tool or context + result
Example: Automated weekly inventory reports in Excel, giving operations managers same-day visibility into 12 warehouse locations.
7. Run the plain-text parsing test
This is the fastest way to spot a broken reading order.
- Open the final resume.
- Select all text.
- Copy it.
- Paste it into a plain-text box, such as a basic text editor.
- Read the pasted result from top to bottom.
The result should follow this order:
Name and contact details → Summary → Skills → Experience → Education → Certifications
Check for these faults:
- A second column appears in the middle of a job description.
- Dates are separated from the jobs they describe.
- Job titles appear after unrelated bullets.
- Skills are scattered through the contact section.
- Characters replace letters.
- Important text disappears.
- Headers or footers interrupt the work history.
If the order is wrong, return to the source document and rebuild the layout. Do not try to fix a column problem by changing font color or adding spaces. Remove the layout object causing it.
8. Run a final file check
A public checker can provide another inspection. Upload your resume PDF and paste the same job into the ATS resume checker. It reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. It is useful for finding possible issues, but it is not a Workday or Greenhouse number and cannot prove how a specific employer's system will process your file.
The Free Tools page scans the file. It does not rewrite your CV. If you need a tailored draft from your profile facts, start with YourUnique.cv. You can try it for 7 days without a card and export a PDF when finished.

Questions
- What is the best ATS Reddit advice for a resume upload?
- Use a simple DOCX or text-based PDF, one column, standard headings, a visible skills section, and keywords that accurately describe your experience. Then paste the resume into a plain-text box to check its reading order.
- Should I use a PDF or DOCX for an ATS application?
- Use the format named in the application instructions. If no format is specified, a clean DOCX is often a practical choice. A text-based PDF can also work, but avoid scanned PDFs, image-only files, and complex layouts.
- Can an ATS checker predict an employer's score?
- No. A public ATS checker can find likely parsing and keyword issues, but it does not produce the same number as an employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other system.
- How can I find the right keywords for one job?
- Paste the job description into the [job description keyword extractor](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/job-description-keyword-extractor), then select 8 to 12 requirements, tools, and phrases that truthfully match your background. Do not add skills you do not have.
- Can [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) help tailor a resume?
- Yes. You can upload a resume, keep its layout or select a built-in template, add a job description or job link, and get a CV written from your profile facts. It also provides an ATS read against that job, but it is not the employer's ATS score.
