Checking an ATS score of a resume free is useful before you apply, but the number is only a diagnostic. Upload your resume PDF with the target job description, review the keyword and parsing findings, fix one issue, and scan again. Stop when the text copies back cleanly and the job's must-have skills appear in accurate context.

A checker cannot reproduce the exact setup used by an employer. Do not treat a public score as a Workday or Greenhouse result, and do not chase a perfect number. Use the scan to find repairable problems.

Start with the job description, not the score

Use the exact job post for the role. A general resume may contain strong experience but still miss the terms the post uses.

Separate the job description into four groups:

  • Must-have skills, certifications, education, and years of experience.
  • Tools, platforms, software, and methods.
  • Responsibilities that should appear in your work bullets.
  • Nice-to-have terms that matter less than the requirements.

The job description keyword extractor can list must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves from a pasted job description. You can add your resume PDF to see which terms are already present. Do not add a skill simply because it is missing. Add it only if your background supports it.

Read the post yourself too. Context matters. A resume with the word “Python” in a skills list is weaker than a bullet that explains what you used Python to do.

Run a free ATS scan

  1. Save the version of your resume you plan to send as a PDF.
  2. Copy the full target job description, including the requirements section.
  3. Upload the PDF and paste the job description into a checker.
  4. Record the score, missing keywords, section warnings, and parsing issues.
  5. Open the PDF as plain text or paste its text into a blank document.
  6. Compare the extracted text with the visual PDF.

The ATS resume checker accepts a resume PDF and a pasted job description. It reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account. Its result is a check against common resume and job-description signals, not the number used by an employer.

If you want a draft based on your actual profile facts, you can also paste the same job into YourUnique.cv. Its paid product can use an uploaded resume, an optional LinkedIn URL, and a job description or link to create a tailored CV. It then provides an ATS read against that job. Keep the plain-text paste test in your workflow.

What a typical checker measures

The exact rules vary. These are common checks and the repair they suggest.

AreaWhat the checker may inspectWhat you should verifyCommon repair
KeywordsTerms shared by the job post and resumeAre true must-have skills present?Add supported terms in a skills section or relevant bullet
SectionsHeadings such as Experience, Education, and SkillsCan a reader and parser find each section?Use clear, standard headings
DatesMonth and year patterns, order, and gapsAre employment dates consistent and easy to read?Use one format, such as Jan 2022 to Mar 2024
Contact fieldsName, email, phone, location, and linksAre fields visible in extracted text?Put contact details in the main document area
File typePDF or another accepted formatDoes the application request PDF, DOCX, or another file?Follow the employer's instruction
Text extractionReading order and selectable textDoes copied text follow the correct order?Remove text boxes, images of text, and complex columns

A checker may also flag length, repeated terms, or missing job titles. Treat those findings as prompts to inspect the document. They are not universal hiring rules.

How to read the score without chasing vanity numbers

Look at the evidence behind the number. Ask four questions:

  1. Which must-have terms are missing?
  2. Are the terms in the right context?
  3. Did the PDF extract in the correct reading order?
  4. Are the warnings about real errors or optional preferences?

A score can rise because you repeat a keyword several times. That does not make the resume stronger. It can also fall because the checker does not recognize a synonym, even when a human would understand it.

Do not pad the skills section with every phrase in the job post. Do not claim experience you do not have. A truthful resume with clear evidence is more useful than a high number built from repetition.

Scored sample: repair the resume, not the number

Imagine a checker returns this result for a marketing operations role:

Scan areaBeforeAfter
Overall diagnostic score61/10082/100
Must-have keyword coverage5 of 98 of 9
Sections detected4 of 66 of 6
Date consistencyWarningClear
Text extractionTwo-column order problemClean

The before version has a graphic header, a two-column layout, “automation” in a skills list, and no evidence of the tool named in the post. Its dates use 2021, 04/22, and March 2023. The phone number is inside a header graphic. The checker misses the Summary and Experience headings.

The after version uses a single column. It places the name, email, phone, and location in selectable text. It changes headings to Summary, Experience, Skills, and Education. It uses Apr 2022 to Mar 2023 throughout. A truthful bullet adds the supported tool and context:

Before:

Improved campaign reporting and automation for the marketing team.

After:

Built HubSpot campaign reports and automated weekly lead-routing checks, reducing manual review time by 30%.

The after version does not add an unsupported certification or copy every job-post phrase. It adds one accurate tool, a measurable result, and a clear action. The score changed, but the document also became easier for a person to read.

Use a one-change repair loop

Do not rewrite the entire resume after every scan. Change one class of problem, then re-scan. This tells you what helped and prevents accidental damage.

Start with parsing. Fix columns, tables, graphics, headers, footers, icons, and text that cannot be selected. Then check headings and dates. Next repair contact fields and file type. Last, improve keyword coverage with truthful evidence in the appropriate section.

After each change:

  • Export the file in the required format.
  • Run the same resume and the same job description through the checker.
  • Paste the resume text into a blank document.
  • Check that headings, dates, bullets, and contact details remain in order.
  • Compare must-have skills with the job post.

Stop when the text paste-back is clean and the job's must-have skills appear in context. A higher score is not a reason to keep editing if the remaining missing terms are not skills you possess.

Ten-item fix checklist

Use this list before the final scan:

  • 1. Use the exact job description for the comparison.
  • 2. Confirm your name, email, phone, location, and professional link are selectable text.
  • 3. Replace vague or decorative headings with clear headings such as Experience, Education, and Skills.
  • 4. Put the job's supported must-have skills in relevant bullets or a skills section.
  • 5. Mention tools in context, including what you did with them.
  • 6. Use one date format throughout the resume.
  • 7. Check that employment dates are in reverse chronological order and do not contain accidental gaps or typos.
  • 8. Remove text embedded in images, icons, sidebars, and complicated columns.
  • 9. Save the file in the format requested by the employer, and open the exported file to inspect it.
  • 10. Re-scan the same file, then perform the plain-text paste test and stop when the output is clean.

You can build the revised version in YourUnique.cv using your real profile facts, keep your existing layout, or select a resume template. The tool can tailor the CV to the job, but you still decide whether every statement is accurate.

Apply today checklist

Before you click Submit:

  • File type matches the employer's instructions.
  • Standard headings are present and easy to find.
  • Supported must-have skills appear in context.
  • At least five experience bullets show actions, tools, results, or scope.
  • The resume passes the plain-text paste test.
  • Run the final file through the ATS resume checker with the exact job description.

Use the score to find defects. Use the job post to set priorities. Use your own evidence to decide what belongs on the resume.

Questions

How can I check an ATS score of my resume for free?
Upload your resume PDF and paste the target job description into a free ATS checker. Use the result to find missing keywords, sections, parsing errors, and file problems. Treat the score as a diagnostic, not as the employer's score.
What ATS score should a resume have?
There is no universal passing score or employer cutoff. Different checkers use different rules, and employers may use different applicant tracking systems. Prioritize accurate job keywords, readable sections, complete dates, correct contact details, and clean text extraction.
Can an ATS checker prove my resume will pass Workday or Greenhouse?
No. A public checker can identify common keyword and formatting problems, but it cannot reproduce the exact setup used by an employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or another applicant tracking system.
Should I add every missing keyword to my resume?
No. Add a keyword only when it accurately describes your skills, work, education, or tools. Place true skills in a relevant section or achievement bullet instead of copying terms you cannot support.
Can [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) help me compare a resume with a job description?
Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your profile facts and a pasted job description or job link to create a tailored CV, then provide an ATS read against that job. It does not give the employer's own ATS score.
