The financial controller checklist is simple: make the file easy to parse, match the language of the job description, and prove what you controlled, improved, reported, or delivered. Your resume should make it clear that you can own the close, protect financial data, produce accurate reporting, manage controls, and work with auditors and senior leaders.
Use a standard single-column layout. Put relevant keywords in a skills section and in work-history bullets. Then test the PDF by copying all text into a plain text editor. If dates, headings, or bullets become unreadable, fix the file before you apply.
What a financial controller resume must show
A controller resume needs more than a list of accounting duties. Hiring teams need evidence of scope and results. An ATS needs recognizable terms from the posting.
Check for these areas:
| Resume area | What to include | Proof to add |
|---|---|---|
| Financial close | Month-end, quarter-end, year-end, consolidation, journal entries, reconciliations | Reduced close time, improved accuracy, managed a defined close calendar |
| Reporting | Management reporting, statutory reporting, board reporting, variance analysis, KPI reporting | Reporting frequency, audience, faster delivery, better forecast visibility |
| Controls | Internal controls, SOX, segregation of duties, risk review, control testing | Fewer findings, improved control coverage, documented procedures |
| Audit and compliance | External audit, internal audit, GAAP, IFRS, tax coordination, regulatory filings | Audit results, filing volume, clean or faster audits, resolved issues |
| Planning | Budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, scenario analysis, financial modeling | Budget size, forecast accuracy, savings, cash improvement |
| Systems | ERP, general ledger, consolidation, reporting, close-management tools | Implementation, migration, automation, users supported |
| Leadership | Team management, review processes, training, cross-functional work | Team size, process ownership, delivery improvements |
Do not force every term into the resume. Use the terms that match the role and your experience. If a posting asks for NetSuite and you used NetSuite, list it. If you used another ERP, name that system instead of claiming NetSuite experience.
Worked example: turn a job description into a resume plan
Imagine a posting asks for a controller who will:
- Own the monthly close and consolidated reporting.
- Manage a team of six accountants.
- Maintain internal controls and support the annual audit.
- Lead an ERP implementation.
- Prepare budgets, forecasts, and cash flow analysis.
- Report to the CFO.
Your resume plan should reflect those responsibilities without copying the posting as a block of text.
Targeted skills section:
Month-End Close | Consolidated Reporting | Internal Controls | Annual Audit | Budgeting and Forecasting | Cash Flow Analysis | ERP Implementation | Team Leadership | GAAP | Variance Analysis
Evidence plan:
- Put close and consolidation in the first one or two experience bullets.
- State the size of the accounting team.
- Name the ERP and explain your role in the implementation.
- Add the reporting audience, such as CFO or executive team.
- Quantify the result when you can verify it.
The plan should change for every relevant posting. One role may prioritize SOX and public-company reporting. Another may prioritize cash management, inventory accounting, or a private-equity reporting package.
Before and after: controller resume bullet
A weak bullet often names an activity but gives no scale or result.
Before:
Responsible for monthly close, financial reporting, and managing the accounting team.
This version may contain useful phrases, but it does not show ownership, scope, systems, speed, or business impact.
After:
Led a six-person accounting team through monthly close and consolidated reporting for a $48M business, cutting close time from 12 to 8 business days and delivering variance analysis to the CFO.
The revised bullet gives the reader and parser several useful signals: team leadership, monthly close, consolidated reporting, company scale, a measurable result, variance analysis, and CFO communication.
Use the same pattern for controls:
Before:
Managed internal controls and helped with the audit.
After:
Documented and tested 35 key internal controls, coordinated the annual external audit, and resolved prior-year control findings before the next reporting cycle.
Only use numbers and results you can defend. If you cannot verify a percentage or dollar amount, describe the action and scope accurately.
ATS format checks for a controller resume
An ATS can read ordinary text more reliably than decorative design. Company sites and LinkedIn Easy Apply may process the file before a person reviews it, so keep the structure predictable.
Use standard headings
Use headings such as:
- Summary
- Skills
- Professional Experience
- Education
- Certifications
- Technical Skills
Avoid unusual labels such as “My Finance Story” for the work-history section. A human may understand it, but a parser has less context.
Keep important text in the body
Put your name, phone, email, location, summary, and key skills in the main document body. Do not place essential information inside a graphic, text box, image, header, or footer. Use selectable text throughout the PDF.
Keep dates and job titles clear
Use a consistent format such as January 2021 to Present or Jan 2021 to Present. Put the job title, employer, location, and dates on separate readable lines. Avoid layouts where the employer and dates sit in distant columns.
Use normal bullet characters
Standard round bullets are safer than icons or decorative symbols. Keep each bullet focused on one action and result. Four to six relevant bullets for a recent controller role usually give enough space to prove scope without turning the resume into a task log.
For more detail on file behavior, see Resume Scanning Software: What to Write and What to Show. You can also compare a file against a second review process in Resume Review Free: What to Write and What to Show, but treat public tools as checks, not as a prediction of an employer's decision.
Check keywords without stuffing them
Start with the job description. Mark terms that describe:
- Required accounting processes.
- Reporting standards or compliance requirements.
- ERP and reporting software.
- Leadership responsibilities.
- Deliverables and business outcomes.
Place a matching term where it is true. For example, if the posting says “monthly close,” use “monthly close” instead of only “period-end accounting.” If it says “consolidation,” include that term in a bullet if you performed consolidation.
Run the file through the ATS resume checker, then paste the same job into YourUnique.cv if you want a draft based on your real profile facts. The checker reports missing keywords and gaps from the uploaded PDF and job description. It does not reproduce the employer's ATS.
Do not repeat a keyword in every bullet. One accurate skills entry and one or two evidence-based uses in the experience section are usually clearer than a block of repeated terms.
Build the summary around the job
A controller summary should establish level, scope, and strongest match in three or four lines.
Example:
Financial Controller with 10 years of experience leading monthly close, consolidated reporting, internal controls, audit coordination, budgeting, and cash flow analysis for businesses up to $48M. Managed a six-person accounting team and delivered an ERP implementation that improved close visibility for the CFO.
Adjust this to your actual background. Do not write “expert” unless the rest of the resume supports that claim. Do not add public-company, SOX, IFRS, or ERP experience that you do not have.
Final financial controller checklist
Before submitting, confirm each item:
- The PDF contains selectable text.
- The file uses one column and standard section headings.
- Your name and contact details are in the document body.
- Your target job title appears where accurate.
- The skills section includes relevant terms from the job description.
- Your first experience bullets cover the role's main accounting needs.
- At least five bullets show actions, scope, and results across your recent roles.
- Close, reporting, controls, audit, systems, and leadership appear where they are true.
- Dates, employers, titles, and locations are easy to identify.
- No required information is hidden in graphics, headers, footers, or text boxes.
- The file has a professional name, such as
FirstName_LastName_Financial_Controller.pdf. - The plain-text paste test keeps headings, dates, and bullets readable.
If the layout needs work, you can start with ATS-friendly templates and rebuild the content around the posting. YourUnique.cv can also tailor a CV from your profile facts and the selected job description, while leaving you responsible for checking every claim.

Questions
- What should a financial controller resume include?
- Include a simple contact header, a targeted summary, core skills, work history, education, certifications, systems, and measurable bullets covering close, reporting, controls, audit, compliance, budgeting, and team leadership.
- How do I make a financial controller resume ATS-friendly?
- Use standard headings, a single-column layout, selectable text, common date formats, readable fonts, and keywords that match the job description. Avoid text in images, complex tables, sidebars, and headers or footers for important details.
- Should I list every accounting skill on my controller resume?
- List skills that the job requests and that you can support with real experience. Add the tool, process, or standard in a bullet when possible. Do not add skills you have not used.
- Where can I check my financial controller resume?
- Use the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) to scan a PDF against a pasted job description for a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. It is a planning tool, not the employer's Workday or Greenhouse score.
- Can I create a tailored financial controller resume from my existing experience?
- Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your profile facts and a job description to draft a tailored CV, then provide an ATS read against that job. After the resume is ready, [Job Radar](https://yourunique.cv/job-radar) can help find live ATS career-page roles that fit the same profile.
