An effective IT support resume gives hiring managers two quick answers: what systems you can support and what results you produce. It should name relevant tools, match the job description's language, and show evidence through ticket volume, SLA results, resolution rates, and devices supported.

For online job portals, use a simple one-column layout with standard headings. Write the full term and the abbreviation when useful. For example, write Active Directory (AD) once. Avoid graphics, text boxes, icons, and skill bars that can interfere with parsing.

Build your target keyword set first

Start with the job description. Mark terms that describe required work, tools, and outcomes. A typical IT support keyword set includes:

Keyword or phraseWhere to use itEvidence to add
TroubleshootingSummary, skills, experienceDiagnosed login, network, printer, or application issues
TicketingSkills, experienceManaged tickets in ServiceNow, Jira, Zendesk, or another platform
Active DirectorySkills, experienceCreated accounts, reset passwords, managed groups, or changed permissions
HardwareSkills, experienceConfigured laptops, monitors, printers, and mobile devices
Software installSkills, experienceInstalled, configured, patched, or removed approved applications
Remote supportSummary, skills, experienceResolved issues through remote tools for distributed users

Add tools from the actual posting, such as Microsoft 365, Windows 10 or 11, macOS, VPN, DNS, DHCP, Intune, SCCM, imaging, endpoint security, or knowledge base systems. Do not add a tool because it appears in a keyword list if you have never used it.

Sample IT support resume header and summary

Keep your header compact. Include your name, location, phone, email, and a professional LinkedIn URL if you use one.

IT Support Specialist

IT support specialist with 4 years of experience troubleshooting Windows, Microsoft 365, hardware, and access issues for 250+ users. Manage an average of 35 tickets per day through ServiceNow, with 88% first-contact resolution and consistent SLA performance. Provide desk-side and remote support, document fixes, and maintain clear user communication.

This summary works because it identifies the role, names the work, and includes measurable proof. Replace these figures with your own results. If you do not track a metric, use a defensible count, range, or scope instead.

Skills block: split hard and soft skills

A split skills section helps a recruiter scan the page and gives an ATS readable terms. Keep it factual.

Hard skills: Troubleshooting, ticketing systems, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Windows 10/11, hardware setup, software installation, remote support, VPN, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, printer support, laptop imaging, user account management, endpoint support, knowledge base documentation

Soft skills: User communication, incident ownership, prioritization, documentation, customer service, patience, time management, escalation judgment, team collaboration, plain-language explanation

Do not rely on the skills block alone. A keyword has more value when a work bullet proves how you used it.

Turn keywords into evidence-based bullets

Weak bullet:

Responsible for troubleshooting user issues and closing tickets.

Stronger bullet:

Troubleshot Windows, Microsoft 365, VPN, and printer issues through ServiceNow, resolving 35 tickets per day and achieving 88% first-contact resolution.

The stronger version states the tools, method, volume, and outcome. It also uses the language a hiring manager expects without stuffing unrelated terms into the sentence.

Useful IT support metrics include:

  • Tickets handled per day or week
  • First-contact resolution rate
  • SLA response or resolution performance
  • Users, offices, or devices supported
  • Average resolution time, if tracked
  • Number of laptop deployments or software installations
  • Reduction in repeat tickets
  • Number of knowledge base articles created or updated

Use percentages only when you can explain the source. Do not turn ordinary duties into inflated achievements.

Full sample experience section

Common IT support resume mistakes

Listing duties without results

“Answered calls and fixed computers” is too broad. Add the environment, ticketing platform, user group, or result. Even a scope figure makes the work clearer.

Hiding tools in a long keyword block

A skills list that says “Active Directory” is weaker than a bullet that explains account creation, password resets, or group management. Put important tools in both places when you genuinely used them.

Leaving out ticketing systems

Help desk work is usually tracked. Name the platform if the posting names one and you have used it. If your system was different, state the real platform rather than copying the employer's wording.

Using retail language on a technical resume

Customer service matters in IT support, but a retail-heavy resume can hide your technical work. Replace “helped customers find products” with user support, issue diagnosis, documentation, and resolution metrics when those facts apply.

Removing useful customer service detail from a tech resume

The opposite mistake also happens. IT support requires communication. Keep evidence that you explained technical issues clearly, handled frustrated users, trained staff, or maintained service quality.

Claiming tools you cannot discuss

Do not list Azure, PowerShell, Intune, or networking protocols only because they appear in the posting. You may be asked to explain them. Use adjacent experience honestly, such as “assisted with” or “worked under supervision,” when accurate.

Using a hard-to-parse design

Review Resume Format for Applicant Tracking System: A Layout Recruiters and Parsers Can Both Read before choosing a template. Use clear headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, and Certifications.

Check the file against the job description

Once the problem is clear, run your PDF through the ATS resume checker. Upload the resume, paste the job description, and review the match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The page scans the PDF for the result and does not save it to an account. It cannot prove what an employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other system will return.

If you want a draft based on your existing facts, YourUnique.cv can use your resume, an optional LinkedIn URL, and the target job description. It keeps your layout or uses a built-in template, then provides a separate ATS read against that job. Review every bullet before applying.

Also perform a plain-text paste test. Copy the PDF text into a blank document. Check that your name, headings, dates, employers, bullets, and skills appear in the right order. If columns scramble the content, simplify the layout.

One-page IT support resume outline

Use this order for most early-career and mid-career applications:

  1. Header with name and contact details
  2. Target title and a three-line summary
  3. Hard skills and soft skills
  4. Most recent IT support role with four to five bullets
  5. Earlier help desk or technical role with three to four bullets
  6. Internship, related customer service role, or project with two to four bullets
  7. Education, certifications, and relevant training

Put certifications near the bottom unless the posting requires one. Include CompTIA A+, Microsoft certifications, ITIL training, or other credentials only when earned or currently in progress. Do not use a large objective statement or a separate references section.

Before sending the file, YourUnique.cv can help tailor a version to a specific job using facts from your profile. You can also review templates if your current design is difficult to read. Keep the final document simple enough to pass the paste test.

Questions

What keywords should an IT support resume include?
Use relevant terms from the job description, such as troubleshooting, ticketing, Active Directory, hardware, software installation, remote support, Microsoft 365, imaging, SLA, and first-contact resolution. Include only tools and tasks you have actually used.
How do I prove impact on an IT support resume?
Add measurable results to your bullets. Useful figures include tickets handled per day, first-contact resolution rate, SLA performance, users supported, devices managed, and time saved through a process change.
Should an IT support resume be one page?
A one-page resume is a useful target for early-career and mid-career IT support applicants. Keep the most relevant jobs, skills, and achievements. Use a second page only when the extra experience directly supports the role.
How can I check whether my resume matches a job description?
Upload your resume PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) to review matching terms, missing keywords, and gaps. Its result is not a Workday or Greenhouse score.
Can YourUnique.cv help write an IT support resume?
[YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume or optional LinkedIn URL and a job description to create a CV from your profile facts, then provide an ATS read against that job. It does not invent experience.
