Online ATS Resume Checker: Score, Recheck, Repeat Until the Text Pastes Clean
Use an online ATS resume checker to test keywords, sections, dates, file type, and paste-back text before you apply. Repair, rescan, and submit for each job.

An online ATS resume checker is useful for finding missing job terms, weak section labels, unreadable dates, and file problems before you submit. Use the score as a repair signal, not as a hiring prediction.
The final test is simple: paste the resume into a plain-text editor. If headings, dates, contact details, skills, and work history appear in a sensible order, the file is easier to read. Then confirm the job's must-have skills appear in truthful context.
What an ATS resume checker can and cannot tell you
A checker compares your resume file with a job description or runs technical checks against the file. It can help you spot problems quickly. It cannot reproduce every employer's software, settings, ranking rules, or recruiter review process.
Do not treat a public score as a Workday or Greenhouse number. No public checker can prove what an employer's system will assign to your application. A score is useful when you compare your own before and after versions under the same conditions.
The ATS-friendly resume checker article explains the same principle from a file-readability angle. The number matters less than whether the resume content is found and understood.
How to run an online ATS resume checker
- Save the version you plan to submit. Use a clear filename such as
Jordan-Lee-Operations-Manager.pdf. - Read the job description once. Mark required skills, tools, certifications, years of experience, and role-specific phrases.
- Upload the resume PDF and paste the full job description into the checker.
- Record the starting score, missing keywords, and flagged sections. Do not change the resume yet.
- Compare each missing term with your actual experience. Keep it out if you cannot support it.
- Repair one issue. Add a truthful term to an existing bullet, fix a heading, or correct a date.
- Save a new version and run the same file and job description again.
- Stop when the text paste-back is clean and the must-have skills appear in context. Do not keep editing to chase a decorative number.
The ATS resume checker accepts a resume PDF and a pasted job description. It returns a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. The PDF is scanned for the result and is not saved to an account. If you want a draft based on your real profile, you can also paste the same job into YourUnique.cv.
What checkers commonly measure
The exact checks differ. Use this table as a review guide, not a promise that every tool tests every item.
| Area | What the checker may look for | What you should verify yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Terms shared with the job description, including tools, skills, certifications, and role names | Each term is accurate and appears in a sentence, bullet, or skills section |
| Sections | Recognizable headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, and Certifications | The headings match the content below them and the order makes sense |
| Dates | Month and year patterns, consistent employment ranges, and readable chronology | Use one format throughout, such as May 2021 to August 2024 or 05/2021 to 08/2024 |
| Contact fields | Name, phone, email, location, and sometimes a LinkedIn URL | Put contact details in normal text near the top, not only in a header, footer, image, or icon |
| File type | Whether the uploaded file is readable and supported by the tool | Follow the employer's instructions. A PDF may be right for one application, while another may request DOCX |
| Text order | Whether columns, text boxes, graphics, or tables extract in a sensible sequence | Copy and paste the entire file into a plain-text editor and inspect the order |
How to read the score without chasing vanity numbers
Start with the gap report. A high score with a broken text order is not a finished resume. A lower score may reflect a valid difference in wording, such as “customer support” versus “client service.” Decide whether the job's wording belongs in your resume based on your real background.
Check four things before you react to the number:
- Are the required qualifications present?
- Are the important tools and methods named accurately?
- Are the core skills connected to work you actually performed?
- Can a reader find your contact details, sections, dates, and experience after copying the text?
Do not add a block of unrelated keywords at the bottom. Do not repeat a phrase several times without evidence. A recruiter needs context, and you need a resume you can defend in an interview.
For a second view of the process, see the ATS score checker free guide. It also treats the score as a prompt for edits rather than a guaranteed cutoff.
Scored sample: before and after
Imagine this job description includes these must-haves: inventory forecasting, Excel, vendor management, purchase orders, and monthly reporting.
| Version | Checker result | What the scan found | What the plain-text test showed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before | 58 | Excel and reporting appeared. Vendor management, purchase orders, and inventory forecasting were missing. | Phone and email were trapped in the header. Dates used three different formats. |
| After | 84 | All five must-haves appeared in truthful context. | Contact details, headings, bullets, and dates appeared in the correct order. |
The increase is not a hiring forecast. It shows that the revised file contains more relevant, readable evidence for this particular job description.
A before bullet might read:
Managed stock levels and worked with suppliers.
A repaired version, if accurate, might read:
Managed inventory levels, created purchase orders, and coordinated vendor deliveries using Excel reports to reduce stock shortages.
The repaired bullet adds context. It does not merely repeat keywords. If you did not create purchase orders or use Excel, do not use this wording. Keep the real claim and investigate the gap instead.
Repair loop: change one thing, then rescan
Make small edits. If you change the summary, skills section, dates, and layout together, you will not know what fixed the problem.
Use this loop:
- Pick the clearest gap.
- Make one defensible change.
- Save a new version.
- Run the same job description again.
- Read the extracted text, not only the score.
- Keep the change if the content is more accurate and readable.
- Revert it if it adds clutter or makes a claim you cannot support.
Start with missing must-have skills that genuinely match your background. Add them where the evidence belongs. A tool can sit in a Skills section, but experience with that tool is stronger when it also appears in a relevant work bullet.
Then check missing sections. Use common labels such as Professional Experience, Education, Skills, and Certifications. Replace creative labels that hide the section's purpose.
Standardize dates. Pick one format and use it for every job and qualification. Check that current roles are marked clearly and that overlapping dates are intentional.
Fix contact fields. Use typed text for your email, phone number, city, and relevant profile link. Do not rely on icons, screenshots, or text embedded in an image.
Check the file type last. Follow the application instructions. If no type is specified, inspect the PDF after export and run a text paste test. A file that looks polished but pastes as empty text needs repair.
Ten-item fix and recheck checklist
Use this list for every tailored version:
- Save a copy with the target role in the filename.
- Paste the complete job description into the checker.
- Compare missing keywords with your real experience.
- Add accurate must-have terms in relevant bullets or sections.
- Use standard headings for experience, skills, education, and certifications.
- Put your name, email, phone, location, and profile link in readable text.
- Standardize every employment and education date.
- Remove text that depends on icons, images, headers, footers, or complex columns.
- Confirm the requested file type and inspect the exported file.
- Change one thing, rescan, and paste the final text into a plain-text editor.
Stop when the paste-back is clean and the job's must-have skills appear in context. A further score increase is not worth false claims, repetition, or damaged readability.
If you want to build the tailored version from profile facts, YourUnique.cv lets you upload a resume, optionally add a LinkedIn URL, keep the current layout or choose a built-in template, and paste a job description or job link. It produces a CV from the information in your profile and provides an ATS read against that job. The free checker pages test files and do not rewrite the CV.
Apply today checklist
- Use the file type requested by the employer.
- Confirm headings are plain, clear, and in a logical order.
- Add only skills you can support with real experience or training.
- Review five tailored bullets for specific actions, tools, and results.
- Paste the whole file into a plain-text editor and fix broken order or missing text.
- Run the final PDF through the ATS resume checker, review the gaps, and submit the clean version.
The target is a readable, truthful resume that answers this job description. The score is only the checkpoint.
Questions
- What does an online ATS resume checker measure?
- An online ATS resume checker can compare resume keywords with a job description and flag missing sections, unclear dates, contact fields, or file issues. Results vary by tool and do not equal an employer's Workday or Greenhouse score.
- What is a good ATS resume score?
- There is no universal passing score. Use the result to find gaps, then confirm that the job's must-have skills appear in truthful, readable context and that your resume survives a plain-text paste test.
- Should I add every missing keyword to my resume?
- No. Add a keyword only when it accurately describes your experience, training, tools, or results. A missing skill is a gap to assess, not permission to claim experience you do not have.
- How can I test my resume before applying?
- Upload your resume PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). Review the match score, missing keywords, and gaps, then repair one issue at a time and rescan.
- Can YourUnique.cv rewrite my resume from a job description?
- [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume, optional LinkedIn URL, and a pasted job description or job link to create a CV from your profile facts. It also provides an ATS read against that job. It does not give the employer's ATS score.
