Resume 1 Page: Chronological vs Combination vs Functional
Build a resume 1 page file that ATS software can parse. Compare chronological, combination, and functional formats, with dates, headings, and layout rules.

A resume 1 page should use a predictable structure, clear dates, standard headings, and simple text. For most applicants, choose reverse chronological format. Use combination format when relevant skills need more space. Avoid a fully functional format because it can separate skills from employers, titles, and dates that an ATS and recruiter need to interpret.
The one-page limit is a practical editing rule, not a reason to remove relevant evidence. Keep the page to your strongest experience for the target job. Do not shrink the font until the document becomes difficult to read.
Choose the format before you edit
Your format controls where the reader finds your work history. It also controls how easily a parser can connect a job title, employer, date range, and bullet points.
| Format | Section order | Best use | ATS risk | Main editing rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chronological | Header, summary, skills, work experience, education | Most applicants with a clear work history | Low when the file uses plain text and standard headings | Put the newest relevant role first |
| Combination | Header, summary, key skills, selected achievements, work experience, education | Career changers or specialists with transferable skills | Medium if the skills section replaces job context | Keep a complete dated work history below the skills section |
| Functional | Header, skills grouped by theme, achievements, limited work history | Rare cases where dates are the main concern | High because skills may not connect to employers or roles | Do not hide dates or remove job titles |
A chronological resume does not mean every job must receive equal space. It means the reader can follow your employment history in reverse order.
A combination resume can work when you have relevant capabilities spread across different jobs, projects, freelance work, or industries. Put the skills near the top, then prove them in dated roles. This is different from listing broad skill groups with no evidence.
A functional resume leads with skill categories such as “Leadership” or “Customer Service” and often pushes job details to the bottom. That design may seem useful for a career change or employment gap. It can still create a parsing problem. A system may not know which employer, title, or date belongs to each achievement.

Use a one-page section order
A reliable chronological resume 1 page can follow this order:
- Name and contact information
- Targeted professional summary
- Skills
- Work Experience
- Education
- Optional certifications, projects, or volunteer work
Use common heading names. Choose “Work Experience,” not “Where I’ve Been.” Choose “Education,” not “What I Studied.” Choose “Skills,” not “Things I Know.” Creative headings may look distinctive, but standard labels give the parser a clearer signal.
Your summary should identify your role, years or type of experience, strongest relevant skills, and a result when possible. Keep it to two or three lines. Do not repeat every keyword from the job description. Use a skill only when you can support it with real experience.
The skills section should be easy to scan. Use text separated by commas or short lines. For example:
SQL, Excel, Salesforce, account management, reporting, customer retention
Then show those skills in your work bullets. A keyword in the skills section is stronger when the experience section explains how you used it.
Write dates as MM/YYYY
Use one date pattern throughout the document. 04/2022 to 09/2025 is clearer than mixing April 2022, 04-22, and 2022 to Present. For a current job, use 04/2022 to Present.
Put the employer and title where a reader expects them. A simple entry can look like this:
Customer Success Manager | Northstar Software | 04/2022 to Present
You can place the title and employer on separate lines if that improves scanning. Keep the dates in the same location for every role. Do not put one date range in a header, another in a footer, and another inside a graphic.
Right-align dates in Word without a table
Tables can create reading-order problems when converted to text. Use a right-aligned tab stop instead.
- Select the lines that contain your job entries.
- Open the Paragraph dialog in Word.
- Select Tabs.
- Set a right-aligned tab stop near the right margin, such as 6.5 inches on a standard page. Use the value that matches your margins.
- Select Set, then OK.
- Type the employer or title text, press Tab once, and type the date range.
The line will look like this in the editor:
Customer Success Manager 04/2022 to Present
The first part stays at the left margin. The date ends at the tab stop on the right. Do not create the spacing by pressing the spacebar repeatedly. Spaces can collapse or shift when the PDF is read as text.
If the right edge feels crowded, shorten the employer name or move the title and employer to separate lines. Do not reduce the body font below a readable size just to force every detail onto one page.
Keep the layout plain and controlled
Your resume should survive three views: the Word document, the exported PDF, and the plain-text version a parser may read. Use one column. Use normal margins. Keep contact information in the main document body instead of a header or footer. Avoid text boxes, decorative icons, photos, charts, and progress bars.
The layout gallery below describes what to do and what to avoid.
Do this
- Use the name at the top, followed by phone, email, city and state, and a professional LinkedIn URL if relevant.
- Use clear headings such as Summary, Skills, Work Experience, and Education.
- Keep one font family and a simple hierarchy for headings.
- Put each role in its own block with title, employer, dates, and bullets.
- Use standard bullet characters and end each bullet with a clear result or task.
- Export to PDF and inspect the text order before applying.
Not this
- Do not use two columns for the main content, even if the design looks compact.
- Do not place skills in a colored sidebar while experience sits in a separate text column.
- Do not replace “Work Experience” with a clever label.
- Do not place dates inside a graphic, image, header, or footer.
- Do not use a timeline with dots and lines as the only record of employment.
- Do not list a large skill cloud without connecting the skills to dated work.
This is the same type of file check covered in How to Check My Resume Is ATS Format or Not. The goal is not to make the document look empty. The goal is to make every important fact easy to locate.
Fit strong evidence onto one page
Start by matching the job description to your real background. Keep the skills, tools, and responsibilities that relate to the role. Remove old software, minor tasks, and duplicate bullets that do not help the reader assess fit.
Give the most relevant role the most space. A recent role may need four or five bullets. Older or less relevant roles may need one or two. The assignment here is not to give every job equal treatment. It is to make the target job easy to understand.
A useful bullet has a direct verb, the work performed, the tool or method used, and a result when you can support one. For example:
Before:
Responsible for reports and customer updates.
After:
Built weekly Salesforce reports and customer update workflows, reducing overdue follow-ups by 18%.
Only use the percentage if it is accurate. If you cannot verify the result, write the work without inventing a number:
Built weekly Salesforce reports and customer update workflows for account teams.
Aim for about five strong bullets across the most relevant recent role, then adjust based on your history. Five weak bullets are not better than three specific ones. Keep each bullet to one or two lines where possible.
Run the finished PDF through the ATS resume checker, then paste the same job into YourUnique.cv if you want a draft based on your real profile. The checker scans the uploaded PDF and reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. It does not reproduce an employer's Workday or Greenhouse result. Still perform the plain-text check yourself.
Check the page in plain text
Open the PDF and try to select all text. Copy it into a plain-text editor. Read from top to bottom.
Look for these failures:
- Dates appear before the wrong employer.
- Bullets from the left column appear after unrelated text from the right column.
- Contact details disappear.
- Symbols replace letters or bullet points.
- The title, employer, and dates are split across unexpected lines.
- Text inside a header, footer, image, or text box is missing.
If the reading order is wrong, return to the Word file. Remove columns and text boxes. Use regular paragraphs, tabs, and standard headings. Export the PDF again and repeat the check.

Questions
- What is the best format for a resume 1 page?
- A reverse-chronological format is usually the safest choice for a resume 1 page. It puts your latest job, title, employer, dates, skills, and results in a predictable order that people and resume parsers can follow.
- Is a functional resume ATS-friendly?
- A functional resume can be difficult for an ATS to interpret because it separates skills from the jobs where you used them. Use a chronological or combination format instead when you need reliable parsing.
- How should dates appear on a one-page resume?
- Use a consistent month and year format, such as 04/2022 to 09/2025. Put the dates in the same position for each role and avoid hiding them in graphics, headers, footers, or tables.
- How can I check whether my resume is ready for an ATS?
- Upload your PDF and paste the job description into the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). It reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. It is a useful check, but it does not produce the same number as an employer's Workday or Greenhouse system.
- Can YourUnique.cv help create a one-page resume?
- Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume or LinkedIn URL, keep your layout or apply a built-in template, and draft a CV from your profile facts and a job description. Review every claim before you apply.
