Resume evaluation is a check that your resume can be read by an ATS, matched to the job description, and understood by a recruiter. Start with the file itself. Then check the job's terms, your section headings, and the proof in your bullets. A polished design cannot fix missing evidence or unreadable text.

Use this order: parse the file, identify relevant keywords, inspect the format, and test each important claim against your work history. The example below shows how to do it without stuffing terms into the page.

What resume evaluation should answer

A useful evaluation answers four questions:

  1. Can the system extract your name, contact details, job titles, employers, dates, and section text?
  2. Does the resume use accurate terms from the target job description?
  3. Are the headings and layout easy to interpret in a plain text reading order?
  4. Do your bullets prove what you did, how you did it, and what changed as a result?

These checks are separate. A resume can have strong keywords and still parse badly. It can parse cleanly and still fail to explain your experience. Treat both problems before you submit.

For background on how tracking systems handle applications, see Resume Application Tracking System: How to Do This Without Breaking ATS. For a broader file review, see Free Resume Check: How to Do This Without Breaking ATS.

Worked example: evaluate one job match

Assume the target job asks for:

Manage paid search campaigns in Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising. Use GA4 to monitor conversions, test landing pages, and report performance to stakeholders.

The candidate has done all of this, but the original resume says:

Managed online advertising and improved campaign results. Worked with the marketing team on reporting.

This bullet has two problems. It uses broad language instead of the tools named in the job description. It also gives no result, scale, or method. An ATS may not connect “online advertising” to paid search, and a recruiter cannot judge the work from the sentence alone.

A stronger version is:

Managed paid search campaigns in Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising across 18 markets, using GA4 conversion data and landing page tests to reduce cost per acquisition by 24%.

The revision works because it does four jobs:

Evaluation areaOriginal bulletRevised bullet
Job language“Online advertising”“Paid search,” “Google Ads,” and “Microsoft Advertising”
Measurement“Improved results”“Reduced cost per acquisition by 24%”
MethodNo methodGA4 conversion data and landing page tests
ScopeNo scale18 markets

Do not copy this structure by inventing numbers. If you do not know the percentage, state the verified change without a false figure. If you used a related tool but not the one in the posting, do not claim direct experience. You can mention the related tool and explain the overlap where it is true.

Step 1: Test ATS parsing before keyword edits

Save your resume as a text-based PDF. Avoid a scanned image, because the words may not be available to the parser. Open the PDF and try to select and copy the text. Paste it into a plain-text editor.

Read the pasted version from top to bottom. Look for these failures:

  • Your name or contact details are missing.
  • Two columns combine into an incorrect order.
  • Dates appear away from the matching employer or job title.
  • Text inside icons, graphics, headers, or footers disappears.
  • Skills are separated from their labels.
  • Tables break a sentence into fragments.

Use common headings such as Summary, Skills, Professional Experience, Education, Certifications, and Projects. Keep job title, employer, location, and dates in plain text. Use one main column unless you have tested a more complex layout carefully.

A design can still be clean without relying on text boxes, charts, logos, or decorative rating bars. If a human needs to guess what a visual means, remove it.

Step 2: Extract terms from the job description

Read the posting and separate terms into three groups:

  • Must-have skills and duties.
  • Tools, systems, methods, and certifications.
  • Nice-to-have requirements.

Mark each term as present, related, or unsupported. Present means the resume states it accurately. Related means you have comparable experience but not the exact term or environment. Unsupported means it should not appear as a claimed skill.

Use the exact phrase when it describes work you have done. For example, if you managed “vendor onboarding,” use that phrase instead of only writing “supplier setup.” Do not repeat it in every section. One accurate mention in Skills and one supported example in Experience is usually clearer than a keyword block.

The ATS resume keywords guide covers this matching problem in more detail. The aim is relevance, not a dense list of terms.

Run the same job description through the job description keyword extractor to list must-haves, tools, and nice-to-haves. You can add a resume PDF to see which terms are already in the file. This tool helps you find gaps. It does not tell you to claim experience you do not have.

After that, paste the job into YourUnique.cv if you want a draft based on your real profile facts. Review the wording and remove anything you cannot verify. Then return to the plain-text paste test.

Step 3: Evaluate proof in your bullets

A keyword without evidence is weak. Review the five most relevant bullets first. Each should make clear what you did and what it changed. Add a method, scope, output, or result where you have accurate information.

Use this before and after pattern:

BeforeAfter
Helped with customer reporting.Built a weekly customer reporting workflow in Looker, cutting manual preparation from six hours to two.
Responsible for onboarding new hires.Created a new-hire onboarding checklist and training sessions for 12 analysts, reducing time to independent case handling.
Worked on website updates.Published 35 website updates in WordPress, coordinating SEO reviews and reducing publishing errors.

The after versions name the work, tool, scope, and effect. They do not need every element in every bullet. Use only facts you can defend in an interview.

Check tense and ownership. Use past tense for completed roles and present tense for current work. Replace “helped” or “worked on” when you can state your direct action. If the result is confidential, describe the outcome without exposing sensitive data.

Step 4: Check the format against the job

Your resume should be easy to scan in both the PDF and pasted text. Check these details:

  • Put your target role or professional summary near the top if it accurately describes you.
  • Keep dates consistent, such as May 2021 to August 2024 or 05/2021 to 08/2024.
  • Spell out an acronym once when the job may use both forms, such as “Search Engine Optimization (SEO).”
  • Put important skills in a readable Skills section and support them in Experience or Projects.
  • Remove repeated paragraphs, hidden text, and keyword lists that do not reflect your work.
  • Keep the final file name simple, such as FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf.

A checker can identify possible gaps, but no public checker proves how a specific employer's system will score you. Use results as an editing signal, not a hiring prediction.

Resume evaluation checklist

Use this short review before each targeted application:

  • The PDF text can be selected and copied.
  • The plain-text paste keeps the correct reading order.
  • Name, email, phone, location, titles, employers, and dates are visible.
  • Standard headings identify each section.
  • The resume includes accurate terms from the job description.
  • Unsupported skills and inflated claims are removed.
  • The five most relevant bullets contain specific proof.
  • Tools appear in context, not only in a keyword block.
  • The final file opens correctly and has a clear file name.

Before applying, you can also use YourUnique.cv to keep your profile facts and tailor a version to a specific job. Its paid workflow can retain your layout or use a built-in template, then provide an ATS read against that job. It does not replace your fact check.

Apply today

Complete these five checks now:

  1. File: upload or attach a text-based PDF that opens and copies cleanly.
  2. Headings: use plain section headings and confirm the pasted reading order.
  3. Skills: compare your accurate skills with the job's must-haves and tools. Run the job description keyword extractor.
  4. Five bullets: revise the five most relevant bullets with specific actions, methods, scope, or results.
  5. Plain-text paste test: copy the final PDF into a plain-text editor and fix anything missing or out of order.

Then submit the version that matches the job without adding experience you do not have.

Questions

What is resume evaluation for an ATS application?
Resume evaluation is a practical check of whether your resume can be parsed, matched to a job description, and supported by clear evidence in your bullets. It covers the file, headings, keywords, format, and work history.
What should I check first during resume evaluation?
Check the PDF text layer first. Open the file, copy all text, and paste it into a plain-text editor. If sections, dates, or contact details appear in the wrong order or disappear, fix the format before editing keywords.
How many keywords should I add to my resume?
Add relevant terms that describe skills and experience you actually have. Use the wording from the job description when it is accurate, but do not add skills you cannot support with real work, projects, training, or results.
Can the ATS resume checker predict an employer's score?
No. The [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker) scans your PDF against a pasted job description and reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. It is not a Workday or Greenhouse score.
Can YourUnique.cv help with resume evaluation?
Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your resume or profile facts and a job description to create a tailored CV, then provide an ATS read against that job. Review every claim before applying.
