Resume Format for IT Engineers: Columns, Dates, Headings, and Page Length

The best resume format for IT engineers is usually reverse chronological. Put your latest role first, use one clear text column, write dates as MM/YYYY, and use headings such as Work Experience and Technical Skills. This gives the reader and the parser a predictable path through your experience.

Use a combination format when you need a short skills summary before your work history. Avoid a purely functional format in most cases. It hides the dates and employers that help recruiters verify your technical background.

Choose the format before you edit the design

Your format controls what gets read first. It is separate from color, fonts, and visual style.

Use this section order

Use standard section names and keep them in a predictable sequence:

You can move Education above Work Experience when you are a recent graduate. Put Certifications near Technical Skills when a certification is a hiring requirement. Keep the main experience timeline intact.

Use these heading names:

Avoid creative replacements such as “Where I’ve Been,” “My Toolkit,” “Proof of Work,” or “Learning Path.” A person may understand them, but standard headings give parsing software a better chance of assigning the content to the right section.

Do not put the entire resume inside a header or footer. Contact details in a header may be missed or separated from the rest of the file. Keep your name, phone, email, city, and portfolio or GitHub link in the main document body.

Write dates as MM/YYYY

Use month and year for every position. Examples:

• 04/2022 to Present
• 08/2019 to 03/2022
• 09/2015 to 06/2019

Use one style throughout. Do not mix “April 2022,” “04-2022,” and “2022.” Do not write only a year when the rest of the resume uses months. A consistent date sequence makes employment length easier to understand.

For a current job, use “Present” rather than an end month. For contract work, label the arrangement in the job title or company line if it matters: “Cloud Engineer, Contract.” Keep the dates visible beside that entry.

Right-align dates in Word without a table

Tables are a common source of reading-order problems. You can align dates with a right tab stop instead.

1. Select the lines that contain your employer, title, and dates.
2. Open the Paragraph dialog and choose Tabs.
3. Set a right-aligned tab stop near the right margin. For a standard one-page document, this may be around 6.5 inches, depending on your margins.
4. Choose Set, then OK.
5. Type the employer and title, press the Tab key once, and type the date.
6. Check that the date reaches the same right edge on every entry.

The spaces above represent a right tab stop, not a row of typed spaces. Do not press the spacebar repeatedly. Do not use a text box to hold the date. If the tab stop makes the line wrap, shorten the employer text or adjust the margins slightly. Keep the date attached to the correct role.

Keep the layout plain and readable

A safe IT engineer resume normally has one text column, regular paragraph text, simple bullets, and enough white space to separate entries. Use a common font such as Arial, Calibri, Georgia, or Times New Roman. Use a readable body size, often 10.5 to 12 points, and make headings larger through size or bold text rather than decorative graphics.

Do this: Put your name at the top, followed by contact details in the document body. Use one column. Place each job title, employer, location, and date in a consistent block. Put skills in a normal text section with comma-separated tools or short skill groups.

Not this: Put contact details in a graphic banner, add icons beside every skill, or place the phone number in a footer. The visual result may look polished, but important text can be read in the wrong order or skipped.

Do this: Use bullets that start with an action and include technical context. Example: “Automated Linux patching with Ansible across 120 production hosts, reducing manual maintenance work.”

Not this: Use vague bullets such as “Responsible for servers and support.” It gives the parser little useful detail and gives the recruiter no clear result.

Do this: Keep dates, titles, and employers as selectable text. Export a text-based PDF from Word or your resume editor.

Not this: Submit a scanned image PDF, a screenshot, or a file where the resume text cannot be selected. A visual inspection alone will not confirm that the text is extractable.

Do not add a tool because it appears in the job description if you have not used it. You can mention a related skill in a learning or project context only when that statement is true. Accuracy matters more than a long keyword block.

Put the strongest matching skills in your work bullets too. A parser may find “Terraform” in the skills section, while a recruiter needs proof that you used it in a real environment. Include scale, systems, methods, and outcomes when you can support them.

Set the right page length

Use one page when you have limited experience or less than about five years of relevant work. Use two pages when your technical history needs the space. Senior engineers with several relevant roles, major projects, certifications, or leadership responsibilities should not shrink everything into unreadable text to force one page.

Page length is not a magic ATS rule. Relevance and readability matter more. Remove old jobs, repeated bullets, and unrelated tools before reducing the font below a comfortable reading size. Keep the most relevant achievements for the target role.

Check the second page before exporting. Do not leave one short line or a single orphaned bullet on it if a small edit can fix the break. Do not delete useful evidence merely to hit a page count.
