Resume Templates Creator: Simple Layouts That Still Parse in 2026
Resume templates creator guide for 2026: build a single-column ATS resume with safe fonts, margins, headings, job edits, and a plain-text apply checklist.
7 min readAlex Brennan
A resume templates creator should produce a plain, single-column file first. That layout is easier for an ATS to read and easier for a recruiter to scan. Use standard headings, ordinary text, a readable font, and a clear order from contact details to education.
You can make the template in Microsoft Word or Google Docs. The tool matters less than the document structure. Avoid text boxes, layout tables, contact icons, photos, and multi-column skill grids. These elements can change the reading order or hide information when the file is parsed.
The recommended resume structure
Use this order for most applications:
- Name and contact details
- Summary
- Skills
- Experience
- Education
- Optional extras, such as certifications, projects, languages, or volunteer work
This order gives the parser predictable labels. It also puts your strongest job-related information near the top. You can move an optional section when it supports the role, but keep the main headings intact.

YOUR NAME
City, State | Phone | Email | LinkedIn URL
SUMMARY
Two to four lines connecting your experience to the target role.
SKILLS

EXPERIENCE
Job Title, Employer, City, State Dates
• Accomplishment or responsibility with a result.
• Accomplishment using a required tool or method.

EDUCATION
Degree, School, City, State Graduation year
OPTIONAL EXTRAS
Certifications, projects, languages, or relevant volunteer work
Keep each section as normal document text. Do not place the summary in a header or the contact details in a footer. Some parsers may treat headers and footers differently from the main body.

Font and margin rules
Choose Calibri, Arial, or Georgia. Use 10 to 12 point text for the main body. Your name can be larger, and headings can use a modest size increase. Do not shrink the document to fit more content. Remove weak wording instead.
Use standard margins, such as 1 inch on all sides. If you need more room, a small reduction can work, but leave enough white space for reading. Keep the page left aligned. Use bold or a simple size change for headings. Avoid decorative lines, unusual symbols, and large blocks of color.
| Resume element | Safe starting rule | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Font | Calibri, Arial, or Georgia | Common fonts reduce display and parsing problems |
| Body size | 10 to 12 pt | Keeps text readable without excessive page length |
| Margins | Standard 1 inch margins | Gives the page a familiar document structure |
| Alignment | Left aligned | Preserves a predictable reading order |
| Headings | Summary, Skills, Experience, Education | Makes sections easier to identify |
| File version | Word or Google Docs source, then required export | Lets you edit without rebuilding the file |
Create the file in Word or Google Docs. Keep a clean source version in the format you used. When an application requests DOCX, submit DOCX. When it requests PDF, export a PDF and inspect the exported copy. Follow the employer's instructions when they specify a file type.
What the plain-text template should look like
A downloadable-style template should still make sense when all styling disappears. Use this sample as the base for a Word or Google Docs file:

The sample is deliberately plain. It has no columns or visual blocks. A real resume should use your own facts. Do not copy its skills or claims unless they describe your experience.
Three layouts that can fail parsing
1. Two-column resume with a narrow sidebar
A sidebar may place skills, dates, and contact information in a separate reading stream. The ATS may read the sidebar first, last, or in a mixed order. A recruiter may also see a broken text sequence after upload.
2. Resume built from text boxes
Text boxes can look aligned in Word but behave like separate objects. Contact details may not appear in the main text extraction. Job titles, employers, and dates can also become disconnected.
3. Layout table with hidden borders
A table may appear invisible because its borders are turned off. It is still a table in the document structure. Dates can move away from employers, and skills can be read in the wrong order. Do not use tables to position resume sections.
A multi-column skill grid has the same risk. Put skills in a normal line or short list instead. Icons can also replace words such as phone, email, or LinkedIn. Write the labels and details as text.
How to customize one template for one job
Keep the template's structure stable. Customize the content inside the sections.
Start with the job description. Mark the required tools, job functions, certifications, and terms used to describe the work. Then compare those terms with your actual experience. Add a keyword when it is accurate and supported by your background. Do not add a skill you do not have.
Make the summary specific to the target role. Replace generic phrases with the job's main function and the experience you can prove. In Skills, put the most relevant items first. In Experience, revise the first few bullets so the most useful evidence appears early.
Do not rename headings to creative alternatives. Use “Experience” instead of “Where I Have Worked.” Use “Education” instead of “Academic Journey.” Standard labels give the parser a better chance of classifying each section.
Do not create a new column for every job. Do not move dates into a side panel. Do not put keywords in white text or repeat them unnaturally. The file must still read well when copied into a plain-text editor.
Run the file through the ATS resume checker, then paste the same job into YourUnique.cv if you want a draft based on your real profile. The checker scans the uploaded PDF and pasted job description for a match score, missing keywords, and gaps. It is a diagnostic, not a replica of an employer's ATS.
A quick customization pass
Use this order before exporting:
- Read the job description once without editing.
- Mark requirements you genuinely meet.
- Add accurate terms to Skills and relevant bullets.
- Replace the summary with two to four targeted lines.
- Check the first five experience bullets for clear evidence.
- Confirm that headings, dates, and contact details remain plain text.
- Export the requested file type and inspect the result.
If you want to start from a finished structure, templates can help you keep the layout consistent while you tailor the wording. You still need to verify every fact and run the plain-text test yourself.
After the resume is ready, open Job Radar to find live ATS career-page postings that fit the same career profile. It searches public career pages, not LinkedIn or Indeed, and is useful for finding the next role after your file is prepared.

Questions
- What is the safest layout for an ATS resume?
- A single-column layout with standard headings, left-aligned text, normal paragraph flow, standard margins, and no text boxes or tables used for layout is the safest starting point.
- Should I use Word or Google Docs for an ATS resume template?
- Use either Word or Google Docs if the template uses ordinary text, clear headings, and a single column. Save the required file type for the application portal, and check the exported file before submitting.
- Can I use icons, graphics, or a photo on an ATS resume?
- Avoid icons, graphics, photos, and decorative elements when an ATS must read the file. They can hide contact details or create confusing text order.
- How can I check whether my resume matches a job description?
- Run your file and the job description through the [ATS resume checker](https://yourunique.cv/free-tools/ats-resume-checker). It reports a match score, missing keywords, and gaps, but it is not the employer's Workday, Greenhouse, or other ATS score.
- Can YourUnique.cv help me create a tailored resume?
- Yes. [YourUnique.cv](https://yourunique.cv) can use your profile facts and a job description to draft a CV, then provide an ATS read against that job. After the resume is ready, [Job Radar](https://yourunique.cv/job-radar) can help you find live ATS career-page roles that fit the same profile.
